  1. Jaim says:

It’s like they’re real people, not GOP-constructed cartoons meant to keep Americans afraid and weak.

    Wowsers.

  2. Frank DiSalle says:

Muslim-Americans ! Were they born in Musl ?

    Heh

    Gimme a break!

    More hyphenated Americans…

    Who cares ?

Now we have to hear “Republicans all think all Muslims are terrorists ” ?

Who’s more simple minded ? The person who thinks all Muslims are terrorists , or the person who thinks that all Republicans think all Muslims are terrorists?

    I’d say it’s a toss – up .

  3. Porlock Junior says:

So, if we’re not going to say someting totally stupid, Frank DiSalle will say it for us! But don’t worry, he will duly give us credit for it.

Meanwhile, America does something really excellent: Muslims living here, according to surveys and not just PR films, consider themselves as American; the great nations of Europe, alas, cannot make a comparable claim. It’s a pity that some (few, really negligible, invisible, of course) American Patriots don’t show any pride in this.

  4. Wek says:

Sand People! They’re coming to kill you. Killllll youuuuuuuuu!!!

  5. Frank DiSalle says:

I did an extensive study of the Middle East nearly 20 years ago.. And excuse me , if I am unduly impressed by the fact that some Muslims live here …

What do you want from me ? “Muslims are good”?

    Puhleeeeeeeeeze !

  6. Johnny Pez says:

What do you want from me?

How about, “Conservatives have spent the last eight years demonizing Muslims, so anything we can do to un-demonize them is a worthy endeavor.” Or would that be too much like honesty?

  7. Jaim says:

“What do you want from me ?”

Um, nobody asked for your lame-ass jingo-istic opinion in the first place.

Muslims are people just like Christians. Some are good, some are bad. This doesn’t jib with the GOP’s attempt to paint them all as brown-skinned jihadists.

  8. Robert says:

During my career at the local VA Medical Center (24 years), I did have a Muslim colleague in the Prosthetics department. She was distinguishable mainly due to modesty of dress and having the weirdest-smelling lunches in the department (halal food, brought from home). She had to share an office with the crazy secretary, which eventually drove her to a lateral transfer to the East Coast, but otherwise, no big deal. And she was working with disabled veterans every day.

IIRC she was from Bangladesh, if anyone’s curious.

  9. Amused Observer says:

    LOL,
Aren’t you guys going to give Bush any credit for his catchphrase about Islam, the Religion of Peace. That hardly sounds like demonizing to me.

Of course if your knowledge of history is so biased that you think Bush is like Stalin… And Jaim, I know spelling is so important to you that you must have just used the wrong word. A jib is the sail in front of the main on a sloop. It is hanked onto the forestay.

I have noticed great numbers of American Muslims speaking out forcefully against terrorism by thier coreligionists. And being extremely careful not to let any of thier charitable funds get into the wrong hands. They are generally most tolerant of the culture around them and would never think of imposing thier values on the general population.

  10. Frank DiSalle says:

Jaim: There was nothing jingoistic about my remarks. You must not understand the meaning of the word “jingoistic”

jingoismExcessive patriotism or aggressive nationalism especially with regards to foreign policy

I guess the idea that a conservative doesn’t really care if there are muslims working for the government, must have stunned you.

The Amused Observer’s comment’s second paragraph’s meaning was not lost on me. It would be a lot harder to label Muslims as anything but “plain ol’ Americans” were his remarks not so perceptive.

  11. Dennis says:

This doesn’t jib with the GOP’s attempt to paint them all as brown-skinned jihadists. Jaim the Spell Check Nazi

The cut of Jaim’s jib just doesn’t jibe.

  12. Jay says:

It’s like they’re real people, not GOP-constructed cartoons meant to keep Americans afraid and weak.

    Wowsers.

Actually, using Jaim and Oliver logic that says anybody who commits an act of terror and is associated with an organization or political ideology makes that entire organization or ideology or party, terrorists…….we can conclude using the same logic that we have terrorists working our government. After all, all of the attacks committed against the United States in the past 16 years save for Oklahoma City were committed by Muslims.

  13. Jay says:

This doesn’t jib with the GOP’s attempt to paint them all as brown-skinned jihadists.

No Jaim. YOU are doing that. YOU are the one that is engaging in guilt by association by calling the GOP the “party of terrorism” because of the lone acts of two dirtbags. It is YOU and people like YOU that create this kind of climate. There has never been a single act of violence against abortionists or abortion clinics that can tied directly to any involvement with Operation Rescue, but Oliver feels it is necessary to label them a “terrorist organization” because ONE MEMBER decided commit murder.

You cannot have it both ways. You can’t get your panties all bunged up when people make blanket statements against Muslims, Democrats, etc. because of the actions of 1 or 2 people.

  14. “Jay” conveniently excludes the white (and almost always right wing) terrorists that have frequently operated in the past 16 year period he mentions.

Or perhaps white, right wing terrorists are okay with “Jay”?

And why would he specifically exclude the white Christian terrorist Timothy McVeigh from his list?

    Very strange.

It’s even stranger that “Jay” would apply the right wing “logic that says anybody who commits an act of terror and is associated with an organization or political ideology makes that entire organization or ideology or party, terrorists” only to brown people and Muslims.

Apparently he’s just following Right Winger’s First Rule: Rules Are For Other People.

  15. Duros62 says:

“What do you want from me ?”

If we told you, Frank, would it make the slightest difference?

  16. Frank DiSalle says:

Actually, Duros, it was a reference to the following sentence :

What do you want from me ? “Muslims are good”?

So I was asking if that is what you wanted…

It was Oliver who created the fiction : “I’m going to say something good about Muslims — watch the conservatives become apoplectic”

When that didn’t happen, you have all tried to pretend that it did.

Therefore, I repeat, “There are Muslims in the government… Who cares?”

  17. ed says:

You cannot have it both ways.

Is it OK for me to make any blanket statements about suicidal religious fundamentalist zealots? Because that particular group seems to be somewhat problematic. Of course, a sizable subset of this group is a key element of the Republican Base. That’s unfortunate.

  18. SFC B says:

I enlisted six Muslims into the Army during my time in recruiting. Five of them Arabic translators. I assume none of them were gay, I make the assumption because no one asked, they didn’t tell, and I didn’t care. Only one of them ever mentioned anyone in the Army giving them grief over their religion, and the Soldier who gave them the grief wound up being reduced for it. I’m sure it’s nice to assume that about half of the country is running in terror at the sight of a hijab, but really, the vast, vast, vast majority of Americans probably couldn’t be bothered to give a crap about who you worship.

Is the fact that there are Muslim working in the government supposed to be a shock to someone? Is there actually a reason to post this video, with Mr. Willis’ accompanying commentary, beyond mere rabble-rousing? Did I miss some Republican state legislator purposing that Muslims should be barred from government work due to their religion?

  19. Sean D. Martin says:

Only one of them ever mentioned anyone in the Army giving them grief over their religion orientation, and the Soldier who gave them the grief wound up being reduced for it. I’m sure it’s nice to assume that about half of the country is running in terror at the sight of a hijab gay man, but really, the vast, vast, vast majority of Americans probably couldn’t be bothered to give a crap about who you worship date.

If only sexual orientation could be treated as fairly as religion in the armed services.

  20. SFC B says:

If only sexual orientation could be treated as fairly as religion in the armed services.

If only. President Obama should use his considerable political capital and a massive Democrat-majority in the legislature to do something about that.

Of course, this has about as much to do with the original post as Mr. Willis’ commentary had to do with the video he linked.

  21. ed says:

but really, the vast, vast, vast majority of Americans probably couldn’t be bothered to give a crap about who you worship

Unfortunately, the same cannot be said of the modern Republican party and its leadership.
