  1. Sean D. Martin says:

Yeah, a magazine using a cover image of a past president to comment of issues of today. That’s so unusual.

  2. It is when your entire idealogical movement is based around pretending its always 1980.

  3. Burn says:

I love the Reagan worship from the wingnuts. They just cannot let go, can they? Oh, how they wish for the 80’s just one more time.

Mommy, mommy, is it naptime, mommy? What kind of grown man calls his wife mommy, that’s fucked up.

Here’s a clue to wingnuts, there are millions of young people who weren’t even alive when St Ronnie was in office, and do you think any of them give a shit about him?

  4. To the right wing, Republican Reagan is a perfect cult leader.

Because he’s dead he can’t contradict the right wing’s fictions about him with the facts.

Though to be perfectly fair, Republican Reagan was a master of creating fictions and illusions. It’s what Reagan’s entire career was made of.

Republican Reagan was an effete Hollywood actor who went into marketing and sales, his only true talent.

Republican Reagan was a con artist who sold out America.

Republican Reagan raised taxes, even while more than doubling the US debt, Reagan collaborated with Iranian terrorists, Reagan negotiated with Communist dictators in Russia, Reagan gave amnesty to millions of undocumented immigrants, Reagan cut and ran from Lebanon, Reagan handed Communist China our American manufacturing base, and Reagan betrayed American workers.

And the right wing still invokes Republican Reagan as a deity.

  5. Repack Rider says:

I missed being able to vote against Reaqan for California governor in 1966 by a couple of months, but even at the age of 21 I knew he was a moron.

Everything I have learned about him since has validated that impression. How is it that conservatives never noticed?

  6. Jaim says:

    Reagan raised taxes.

  7. Sean D. Martin says:

OW: It is when your entire idealogical movement is based around pretending its always 1980.

Actually, that would make it less unusual to use such a photo.

  8. jr says:

Repubs would keep Reagan’s corpse in a fridge in the garage like the dad on Reaper

  9. “jr”: “Repubs would keep Reagan’s corpse in a fridge in the garage like the dad on Reaper”

Republican Reagan is only like the dad on the show Reaper in the sense that they are both fictional characters.

For his son, the dad on the show Reaper went to Hell to do legal research on getting his son out of his deal with the devil.

Republican Reagan betrayed his first wife, abandoned his children, and was too weak to serve in World War II (hell) and so stayed at home and went into marketing (lies).

Republican Reagan’s only true talents: Betrayal, lies and evading his responsibilities.

  10. Dennis says:

Republican Reagan’s only true talents: Betrayal, lies and evading his responsibilities. Only Far Left-wing News Reference

Apparently the current president you admire so much doesn’t quite agree, News Idiot.

open Left: Obama’s Admiration of Ronald Reagan

Oh, but you used to be a conservative, so I’m sure you know more about the man than Obama does.

  11. Duros62 says:

It is when your entire idealogical movement is based around pretending its always 1980.

C’mon, that’s a step up. Wasn’t that long ago the whole movement revolved around it being 1955 and everyone lives in Pleasantville.

  12. Pleasantville! Now in Surround Sound AND COLOR!

  13. “Dennis”, I actually read that post the week it went up over a year ago.

Matt Stoller did an excellent job making a list of the reasons why Obama’s admiration* for Republican Reagan was both misplaced and should be a warning to liberals.

The point is that liberals that were paying attention were well aware that OBAMA IS NOT A “LIBERAL” in many different senses.**

Obama is a conservative centrist that takes from both sides and moderate Republicans that are paying attention are growing to appreciate Obama’s consideration.

    Obama’s consideration is genuine.

Obama’s outreach to Republicans and the right wing is genuine.

Obama’s concern and respect for Republicans and right wing issues are genuine.

Me, I’d prefer if Obama completely repudiated ALL of Republican Bush’s ignorant and dangerous policies and started a full scale investigation into Republican Bush era crimes (plural). But I’m a law enforcement conservative.

But I’m also enough of a conservative to know that the obsequious right wing who still slavishly worship their authoritarians would be easily incited to riot by those vicious right wing extremists still in control of the Republican Party if Obama made noise about rounding up the Republican war criminals who authorized torture, lied US into war, looted our treasury, and gave their crony war profiteers no bid contracts.

Considering Obama is trying to clean up after so many Republican’s cataclysmic failures: Collapse of the financial system, multiple war fronts, unaddressed global climate change, amongst other disasters, I try to understand where Obama is coming from, even if I disagree with him.

What’s interesting about the post you cite is re-reading the comments now, over a year later.

If you just skip to the comments rated 4.0, some of them are more than just insightful, they are prescient.

    * Obama never uses the word “admire” or “admiration”. In the comments section of the post you cite is a lively discussion/disagreement of what Obama ‘really said’ and ‘really meant’.

** Your political compass may vary.

  14. Duros62 says:

Obama is a conservative centrist that takes from both sides and moderate Republicans that are paying attention are growing to appreciate Obama’s consideration.

I think I found the problem.

  15. me: “moderate Republicans that are paying attention”

    “Duros62″ “I think I found the problem.”

LOL, yes, “moderate Republicans”, all three of them.

Sorry. Both of them. The Dems are stuck with Specter now. lol.

    Still, Obama’s averaging a 59.7% approval rating…

… and that’s with the Republican Rasmussen outliers pulling down the numbers.
