Feherty says he’s never met a soldier who didn’t love his President and his country. Strangely, I have met soldiers who didn’t love Bush and some who didn’t love Obama, and I’m sure I have much less experience with people in uniform than he does.

Here’s the thing: Feherty is projecting, and by extension, slandering.
If he’d said “Boy, I’d love to shoot Nancy Pelosi twice and then strangle Reid and bin Laden,” well, sure, despite a minor breach of Secret Service alert boundaries, nothing big here.
Instead, he proclaims that the United States military is 100% comprised of soldiers who need only the opportunity and ammunition, because their motivation would be obvious.
Which is slander, even if hyperbole. If Feherty had any balls, he’d have just said he wanted to do it himself.

I know that most people associate “censorship” exclusively with “government.”
I don’t.
“Censorship” is just as effectively done by a corporation.
“Censorship” can be very real to someone who relies on someone else for a paycheck and doesn’t have any real options or legal protections. Corporations rely on their power as employers to effectively “censor” anyone that says the word “union” by simply firing them. Even when there are laws against it they are almost always easily circumvented.
Most corporations can fire at will and many employers really aren’t in a place to fight such terminations.
I’m not against this guy losing his job for spouting murderous jokes.
But taking away a persons livelihood for “freedom of expression” seems far more serious than a sovereign foreign nation denying a vacationer entry based on “freedom of expression.”
Making the defense that one is a private corporation and the other a government doesn’t make the “censorship” of “freedom of expression” any less real.
Losing one’s job is far more serious than being denied a vacation in Britain.

Even more to the point, he doesn’t have a legal right to work for CBS, especially as a spokesman.
If CBS decides it doesn’t want to pay this asshole to speak on their airwaves, then that’s their business entirely.
And if enough people tell CBS that they don’t want to do anything that could be construed as supporting this asshole, then CBS has not only the right, but the fiduciary responsibility to their stockholders to get rid of him.

One does have to wonder however, why the selective outrage. People are bursting blood vessels over his comments about Pelosi and Reid, but apparently supporting putting to death those who oppose gay marriage and are pro-life seems to be no big deal.
Unfortunately, I see this is as ideological posturing. If the paragraph about Pelosi were not there, the comments about killing off pro-lifers and those opposed to gay marriage would have gone virtually ignored. If the comments were made about Eric Cantor and Mitch McConnell it would have been just the opposite.
This was an attempt at humor. An extremely POOR attempt (if I’m not mistaken, what he said was an offshoot of an old lawyer joke) at that, but I’m getting a good laugh at all of the idiots claiming the should be arrested and charged with a crime.

Then — THEN came the trials, with these Marines knowing that their guilt had already been proclaimed by the chairman of a committee with direct oversight over their Corps’ funding.
After the acquittals started piling up, Murtha refused to apologize or retract his accusations, leading to one Marine filing a defamation lawsuit against Murtha — who hid behind his Congressional immunity to say that it covered him answering reporters’ questions well away from his office.
Feel free to look up the details. Murtha pronounced them guilty before they had even been charged, there has not been a single conviction, and Murtha won’t even talk about it now.

It’s ok to call Marines murderers before there’s a trial because Murtha is a veteran and even though they were acquitted, it doesn’t mean they didn’t do it and even if they didn’t, it’s ok to say such things because soldiers did commit such crimes in the past.
Good thing we do have freedom of speech. If there were crimes for writing such idiocy, RR would never see the outside a prison.

Maybe because Murtha thought he said nothing that warranted a retraction or an apology (i.e.,the acquitted Haditha marines shouldn’t have been acquitted). Ever think of that? Plus, the comment I was responding to from Derek implied that Murtha had pegged the “murderer” label on Marines in general, not just the Marines charged with crimes in Haditha.
I repeat: Murtha stated, long before there was even an investigation, that the Marines in question “killed those civilians in cold blood.”
Investigations and hearings and trials have all ruled that that simply isn’t what happened in Haditha.
That’s why one former Marine sued Murtha.
Murtha’s defense wasn’t based on facts, but that as a member of Congress, his making such statements like that — even if completely wrong and defamatory — was protected under the Constitution.
Murtha is a corrupt, lying scumbag. And he’s chairman of the House Appropriations Defense Subcommittee.

Applied consistently, all prosecutors would have to apologize to the defendants they prosecuted if the latter are acquitted for the crimes they are charged with (if anything, the “expected apology for those acquitted” argument would logically apply MORE in this scenario than in Murtha’s, since the latter didn’t actually prosecute the acquitted Haditha Marines).

David Feherty is a retired golfer and golf commentator , unfortunately he thinks of himself as much more , a satirist , a bonvivant , a man whose opinion counts. As a fellow country man I am sickened by his attitude . He would not have made these types of biggoted political comments when he lived in Northern Ireland.

That is pretty ridiculous, Repack. However, the sad thing is, Bush and many of the folks in his administration would probably take you up on that if it meant ensuring our safety (I know I would). That is what they were most concerned with when they made the decision to dunk 3 dirtbag’s heads in water immediately after they masterminded the murder of 3000 of our ciitizens, with the counsel of several attorneys (you do realize that this is all over 3 of the most heinous terroists out of the hundreds or thousands we have captured on the battlefield?….only 3).
That should really be something that gets you fired up. Not whether someone is a democrat or Republican, or whether someone tells a tasteless joke, but protecting innocent Americans while they go about their everyday lives without having to be in fear of someone killing them because they worship and live differently than them. To be somewhat fair, “look over there” can a valid response when trying to point out hypocrisy or inconsistency. If “over there” is an example of one side doing exactly what they’ve just complained about the other side doing.
I haven’t seen any clip of the dinner, so I haven’t seen Sykes routine or Obama’s reaction or etc. So I don’t know if anything Sykes said about Limbaugh was worse than what he’s said about others. But if it is comparable the person shouldn’t be banished to some other venue to make their case.

If we should do anything in our power to keep American citizens safe, including torture, then why must we stop at mere waterboarding? As we’ve already ruled the Geneva Conventions to be “quaint” (according to torture-justifying WH counsel John Yoo), really, the sky’s the limit.
How many fingers would you cut off a terror suspect? It stands to reason, after all, that the harder you press, the faster you’ll get to that imaginary ticking time bomb. How many hours in do you pluck out the first eye? How many members of that suspect’s family would you brutalize or murder in front of him?

Cons like JT are all for American soldiers being tortured. Because surely they must know that if it’s ok to torture foreign fighters, it is ok to torture Americans also.

CBS will not fire or suspend him because this kind of crude liberal-bashing joke appeals to a golfing audience. It is in their financial interest to keep on someone who feeds the base. Now had he said the same joke replacing Pelosi and Reid with two prominent Republicans, CBS would have to straighten him out.
Feherty knew exactly what he was doing. Yeah, he had to apologize but he knows in the end he’ll help his employer earn higher Nielsen points, and he’ll end up getting a raise.

So maybe a conservative can decide to stop telling jokes about killing liberals independently of such crimes. That does require, however, initiative as opposed to constant reaction.
