  1. You wrote: “But when it comes to the Supreme Court, there can be quarter given.”

But the your article seems to suggest you meant: “But when it comes to the Supreme Court, there can be [NO] quarter given.”

    -no quarter given-

Also: “There are from time to time concessions that must be made and comprises that must be happen in order for the realistic political actions of the presidency to materialize into policy.”

Perhaps you meant “compromises that must happen”

    comprises-compromises … must /be/ happen

Does HuffPo let you make corrections to posted articles?

  2. figures, my “corrections” need correcting…

    “But the your” ? harummmph

  4. joaquin says:

Aside from the fact that it will be BHO’s first appointment, I don’t see the big deal. Souter is a lefty that will be replace by some fire-breathing woman lefty.

  5. sgwhiteinfla says:

I can tell you one thing, they better vett the hell out of whomever gets nominated. I mean every single potentially embarrassing incident had better be documented. Especially if it has to do with sex or taxes. That’s really going to probably bigger than the nominee’s judicial record because the GOP won’t focus on the substantive but they will try to find personal flaws to exploit.

  6. buma says:

I too hope he doesn’t cave to the Confederates on his nomination. The interesting thing is that there are 5 SC justices older than Souter. If Obama has an eight year term it seems he can divert the court away from the theocratic course set by bush’s picks, or at least he can give it younger liberals.

  7. justadood says:

    SG–don’t forget the illegal nannies.
The Banana Republicans will look under *every* rock, peer into *every* closet, talk to *every* friend to find something, anything to trumpet to the Press saying “Thus-and-so is unfit for ANY position because of *this*!!”

Whoever is nominated is gonna be under a scanning-electron microscope for character flaws, and needs to be prepared for this.

…..or, as Atrios snarkily suggested, we could move forward in the spirit of bipartisanship and nominate Robert Bork….

  8. joaquin says:

“the GOP won’t focus on the substantive but they will try to find personal flaws to exploit”

Personal flaws! Like what? Tax evasion

  9. justadood says:

joaquin…Personal flaws, like wanting to work in the US Supreme Court, as opposed the the High Court of the Holy Inquisition

This was good for a chuckle…

  10. R.L. Schaefer says:

    THE OBAMA CRITERIA……

    1. Not white (well maybe half – I hear he has insight in dealing with such a person) .

    2. Secular Progressive Relativist (no God, no absolutes, no rule of law – law and morals are merely perceptions of human whimsy – constantly evolving).

    3. Pro Abortion ( The science is clear – the unborn are not human – it’s not clear what they are, but it’s above the boss’s “pay-grade” and that settles it).

    4. Belief that the Constitution is simply a quaint document made up by old white guys wearing wigs and funny shoes (Time for a snappy update through judicial activism – not a mandated Constitutional Amendment).

    5. Belief that Human rights are doled out by the Government based on cultural, economic and political priorities (In other words, justice/rights by opinion polls and the tyranny of the majority – Not endowed by our Creator).

    6. A staunch supporter of the 1 st Amendment (Protect the right of Hollywood liberals to spew filth into our living rooms and public places, and corrupt our young people – while banishing God from public view and demanding He be kept in the same closet where we once kept pornography before it came to the family hour and our streets).

    7. Embrace all parts of the Constitution that promote the Green – Socialist agenda (distort, rend, twist, ignore and marginalize those that don’t).

    8. Must be eco-sensitive and believe the “science” of Global Warming (must be a neo-Pantheist – Nature good, man and his works, evil).

    9. A reader of only the “informational phrase” part of the Second Amendment ( That part about the, “Right of the people to keep and bear arms shall not be infringed.” Well, that was just a typo).

Now where will we find such a learned and evolved person? (Oh, I dunno…. you might try just about any university, courthouse or eco-socialist political group in the country.).

  11. Michael Over Here says:

    joaquin:
that will be replace by some fire-breathing woman lefty

Wow, talk about wearing your personal insecurities on your sleeve.

  12. joaquin says:

Oh, ok Michael. I’m wrong about the next nominee. Right?
It’s not insecurity, it’s reality. There is a difference. ;-)

  13. merl says:

If Jesus Christ were to run in a repub primary, he’d be called a filthy cowardly hippy with a whore mamma.

  14. Sean D. Martin says:

R.L. Schaefer, all your “criteria” are, of course, divorced from reality and mearely right-wing talknig points in very thing disguise. But I find this one:

    6. A staunch supporter of the 1 st Amendment (Protect the right of Hollywood liberals to spew filth into our living rooms and public places, and corrupt our young people – while banishing God from public view and demanding He be kept in the same closet where we once kept pornography before it came to the family hour and our streets).

particulary interesting. It shows very clearly how, in the midst of claiming you support the Constitution and that Obama wants to tear it down, you are in fact the one distorting it (not to mention just being plain hypocritical and stupid).

The First Ammendment does protect the rights of Hollywood liberals to speak out. And it also protects the rights of right-wing reactionary idiots such as yourself to say what they wish. If you actually supported and believed in the Constitution, you would fight to make sure all sides get to speak, not complain when one side does.

Now where will we find such a learned and evolved person? (Oh, I dunno…. you might try just about any university, courthouse

Well of course we wouldn’t want to look there. Because we sure wouldn’t want to consider an educated person or someone familiar with the law?

  15. Right winger R.L. Schaefer’s Supreme Court Criteria:

    1. WHITE.

    - – (Will consider drops of ‘other’ but only up to half).

    2. THEOCRAT.

    - – (See: Sharia Law, Inquisition, Taliban, Neals Horse-ly, Wahhibism, Phelps family, Crusaders, Al-Qaeda, Witch Burnings, Fatwas).

    3. Willing to use force of government to make 9 year olds to carry their father’s child to term.

    - – (See: Brazil, 9 year old impregnated by caregiver).

    4. Believes the Constitution is immutable truth handed down by idolized forefathers.

    - – (Including the parts of the Constitution that designated blacks as 3/5ths of people, denied woment the right to vote, and affirmed the Bible given right to sell your neighbors and their children into slavery.)

    5. Does not believe in human rights except that granted by the Bible.

    - – (see: Handmaiden, slavery, stoning your disobedient child, etc.)

    6. Does not believe in free speech.* Does believe in putting his/her God in the school’s, in the public square, on the public streets, and even in your families living room.

    - – (If you disagree with his/her God see: #2)

    7. Willing to ignore the “Welfare” in “promote the general Welfare,” which is in the first sentence of the Constitution and even Capitalized in the Original.

    - – (The absolute observance of 17th Century document will be sacrosanct. See Rule #2 and Rul #4.)

    8. Must ignore stewardship of God’s Creation and Gift of Life. Must ignore “SCIENCE” and overwhelming evidence of Global Warming.

    - – (Addendum to Rule #2: must not be a neo-Pantheist. Must believe that Nature is evil, while man and his works are good. If any of this is internally contradictory or contradicts Rule #2, see Rule #2.)

    9. Must ignore the first part of Amendment II, in fact, ignore the first four words, no, wait, entirely ignore the first 12 words, no, wait, ignore the first 12 words of Amendment II AND all three commas [,], those were just typos.

    - – (In fact, strike the whole “A well regulated Militia, being necessary to the security of a free State, the right of the people to keep and bear Arms, shall not be infringed.” This is an exception to Rule #4 and shall not be confused with the absolute observance of Rule #4. See also Rule #2 and Rule #6.)

    Welcome to the Neo-Confederate-Puritan-Republican-Sharia-Law Party!

Please remember to bring your own stones to stonings (BYOS). And Honor Killings are your business. Just remember that it’s your responsibility to clean up after stoning your disobedient child to death or cutting off their disrespectful heads.

    * Schaefer, there is usually an OFF switch on most TVs and Radios and Computers. Though maybe you have the super advanced kind of TV and that OFF switch is on the “REMOTE.” There is also a cord that plugs into the wall that can be UNPLUGGED.

And keep in mind, that thing that pops out of your COMPUTER is not a coffee cup holder.

  16. “R.L. Schaeffer” might be a satirist but there is a core part of the right wing that genuinely believes the things they meticulously listed.

That right wing extremist group is a huge part of what animates what remains of the Republican Party.

It’s the part of the Republican Party that right wingers like “Colins” pretend doesn’t exist, and then vote with them anyways.
