… Barack Obama’s approval ratings would be higher lower. This is the sort of thing that Washington Examiner’s conservative Washington correspondent Byron York gets paid actual American dollars to observe.
Hey, Byron, what if we made a black vote worth 3/5 of a white one? No?
I think you mean, “Barack Obama’s approval ratings would be lower.”
Corrected
I bet the same is true of Hispanics. And women. And young people. And the North East. And the West Coast. South West. Midwest.
Pretty much everyone outside of the Deep South and the Mormon Corridor.
People vote for the one that will give them the most goodies.
What’s so hard about that?
If only entitled white people did not exist…
Or they vote for the person they think will do the best job. I know its hard to think blacks are capable, but there you go…
Oh for heaven’s sake, what is wrong about highlighting the disparate numbers in a poll with regard to the answers given by whites vs. blacks? And what is wrong also with pointing out the strong possibility that some in the African-American community are going to give high marks to Obama simply because he is also African-American?
It’s no wonder why people don’t even want to talk about the issue of race. Bring it up in any way and you’ll be declared a racist for doing so.
It’s amazing. There’s nothing wrong with saying that a white person will vote or support a white politician because he’s white and nothing wrong with saying a white man won’t vote for or support a black politician because he’s black but look out! If you dare to suggest that a black person will vote or support a black politician because he’s black, then step up and get ready to be fitted for your sheet!
People vote for the one that will give them the most goodies.
Please tell us how that explains George W. Bush.
Twice.
One of the “goodies” he gave us was 9/11, Iraq was another.
Jay
It’s not pointing out the disparity between the two groups it’s the following line:
“…make some of his positions appear a bit more popular overall than they actually are.”
The “actually are” part is what is offensive. If you can’t see that that is racist, then I don’t know what to say.
Oh for heaven’s sake, what is wrong about highlighting the disparate numbers in a poll with regard to the answers given by whites vs. blacks?
Nothing.
Only he’s not highlighting the differences in demographic groups. He’s being very explicit in what he’s saying.
Here, let’s let York put it in his own words: “…his sky-high ratings among African-Americans make some of his positions appear a bit more popular overall than they actually are.”
What exactly is this supposed to mean? What’s the alternate take on this that I’m missing?
Do African Americans not get to determine how popular positions “actually are”? Unless you’re suggesting that this demographic group has been overrepresented in this poll, there isn’t a leg for you or York to stand on.
Except the “black people don’t count as much” leg. York’s all over that leg.
And what is wrong also with pointing out the strong possibility that some in the African-American community are going to give high marks to Obama simply because he is also African-American?
Well, for starters, I don’t see him pointing out that there’s a strong possibility some in the white community are going to give him low marks simply because he’s African-American.
Jay,
Quoting from the article: “…his sky-high ratings among African-Americans make some of his positions appear a bit more popular overall than they actually are.”
That is only true if the opinions of African Americans are not worth as much as the opinions of “regular” people, since African Americans have every right to consider themselves part of the “overall” electorate. To me that looks like a published racist statement, as opposed to an unstated, unpublished and privately held opinion that might affect an individual’s vote.
Of course individuals hold racist opinions that affect their votes, a First Amendment right if there ever was one. Newspapers have a similar First Amendment right to publish any stupid or hateful screed they wish. Most of the time they have the good taste not to publish racist columns, and when they do I have a First Amendment right to point them out as racist and moronic and you have a First Amendment right to defend them no matter how stupid that makes you look.
What a country!
Cols714, I agree that York chose poor wording for the point he was trying to make, but even I could see that he was talking about the high base of support Obama gets from the African-American community helping to boost his numbers. In order for York to be tagged as a “racist” then somebody needs to show some kind of pattern in his writing as it relates to such statements. York has been a columnist for years. It should be easy for anybody to show that pattern but I doubt one exists.
But shit-stirrers like to stir shit. So rather than even explore the possibility that some of Obama’s support from the AA community stems from the fact that he is AA, it’s easier just to shout somebody down with cries of “RACIST!”
No
Implying that policies are not actually that popular because black people support them more, is not some bland non-racist statement that people try to make racist. It is in fact racist. You don’t have to have a pattern of racist statements to make a racist statement. And that is a racist statement.
Like Oliver said, maybe count them as 3/5 a person.
Yeah, its totally not racist to say that Obama’s real popularity can best be measured if you don’t count the black vote. We’re just being total reactionaries because we think black votes, white votes, asian votes, etc. are all equal.
This argument that we need to have read every word Byron York has written in order to characterize his attack here is the same kind of nonsense that crops up when Limbaugh says something obviously offensive and says only by listening to all 3 hours of his show every day for 10 years can you glean the true majesty of his words.
Quit trying so hard to defend the indefensible.
Well, for starters, I don’t see him pointing out that there’s a strong possibility some in the white community are going to give him low marks simply because he’s African-American.
Oh well that’s a given. CS already pointed that out. Those whites are from the deep south and the Mormon corridor right?
Jay Caruso: “Oh for heaven’s sake, what is wrong about highlighting the disparate numbers in a poll with regard to the answers given by whites vs. blacks?”
Because it is not a matter of race. Blacks voted for John Kerry by nearly an identical margin. Blacks lover Bill Clinton.
But shit-stirrers like to stir shit. So rather than even explore the possibility that some of Obama’s support from the AA community stems from the fact that he is AA, it’s easier just to shout somebody down with cries of “RACIST!”
I have a thought.
I keep hearing this said, yet the difference in support between Obama and any of the set of Kerry, Gore or Clinton in the African American community is marginal.
For instance, in the 2004 election, an election Kerry lost, he won 88% of the African American Vote. In the 2008 election, Barack Obama – who did better in most demographic groups than Kerry, which has something I’m sure to do with him winning that election – got 95% of the African American vote.
The proportions in this poll are a bit different than the voting proportions, but they’ll serve. African Americans make up about 10% of the voting electorate. Would you like to explain to me how less than an extra 10% of a group that makes up 10% of the voters is a group large enough to even bother making this argument over?
“Well, for starters, I don’t see him pointing out that there’s a strong possibility some in the white community are going to give him low marks simply because he’s African-American.”
Jay Caruso: “Oh well that’s a given. CS already pointed that out.”
No I didn’t. I never said those that don’t support him feel that way because of his race. I just said there are a lot of groups that support him and removing any one of them would lower Obama’s support level.
You read that and thought ‘racist white people.’
Oh well that’s a given. CS already pointed that out. Those whites are from the deep south and the Mormon corridor right?
That’s right, Jay. When you don’t have a real argument against me, just take someone someone else said and try to get me to respond to it.
Jay, you should be the LAST person here to complain about “shit-stirring”!
What exactly is this supposed to mean? What’s the alternate take on this that I’m missing?
Well gee Eric, I don’t know. Here’s something you can do. How about emailing York and asking him to explain himself? I’ve written to journalists before when I have read something that struck me in a way that begged for further explanation. They’re often very willing to write back.
Anybody here could do that. Of course, doing so might actually force people to engage in some critical thinking and we can’t have that because knee-jerk reactionary responses of “RACIST!” are so much more fun despite being intellectually vapid.
I just said there are a lot of groups that support him and removing any one of them would lower Obama’s support level.
Yes, and then you added the EXCEPTION of those in the deep south and Mormon corridor. Or did I imagine seeing that?
Another pearl of wisdom from Randy again. Do you ever have anything to say that rises above the value of a rat turd?
Repack Rider: “Quoting from the article: ‘…his sky-high ratings among African-Americans make some of his positions appear a bit more popular overall than they actually are.’

Exactly. And this is why it’s bullshit when they try and turn talk of racism around against me and say I’m obsessed.
This is pure racism. Absolute and undeniable.
Yet they either don’t see it, refuse to accept it, or still feel the need to defend it.
In other words, it’s them, not me.
Me: “I just said there are a lot of groups that support him and removing any one of them would lower Obama’s support level.”
Jay Caruso: “Yes, and then you added the EXCEPTION of those in the deep south and Mormon corridor. Or did I imagine seeing that?”
You did imagine seeing the word ‘white’ there.
Jay Caruso: “Another pearl of wisdom from Randy again. Do you ever have anything to say that rises above the value of a rat turd?”
The hypocrisy is amazing.
Jay Caruso: “Anybody here could do that. Of course, doing so might actually force people to engage in some critical thinking and we can’t have that because knee-jerk reactionary responses of ‘RACIST!’ are so much more fun despite being intellectually vapid.”
Read the quote Repack Rider gave.
Repack Rider: “Quoting from the article: ‘…his sky-high ratings among African-Americans make some of his positions appear a bit more popular overall than they actually are.’”
There’s only one way to interpret that: African-Americans are not or should not be counted as part of the overall population.
Maybe that’s not what he meant to say, but at best it is Freudian Racism.
You did imagine seeing the word ‘white’ there.
You’re right. I guess you were talking about the large Eskimo population in those areas.
Exactly. And this is why it’s bullshit when they try and turn talk of racism around against me and say I’m obsessed. Racist Tourette’s Syndrome Strowbridge
You are obsessed about race, Strowbridge. It’s all you ever talk about. Even when race isn’t the topic, you find a way to make it the topic.
And now you’re obsessed with the fact that people on both sides of the political spectrum are aware of your obsession. Your defensiveness is worse than Obama’s is with Fox News.
Me: “You did imagine seeing the word ‘white’ there.”
Jay Caruso: “You’re right. I guess you were talking about the large Eskimo population in those areas.”
I didn’t mention ‘white’, because it’s not an issue. You are making race an issue, not me. You are making race an issue, probably because you want to deflect charges of racism away from your side and onto ours.
Of course, in that same poll, Joe Biden has an 80% approval rating among African-Americans. In addition, most Democratic politicians have high approval ratings from African-Americans. So, they idea that Obama’s approval really “aren’t that high” because he has high approval ratings among African-Americans is either dumb or disingenuous.
Using that same logic, we should’ve discounted Bush’s approval ratings from evangelicals.
Me: “Exactly. And this is why it’s bullshit when they try and turn talk of racism around against me and say I’m obsessed.”
Dennis the Bigot: “You are obsessed about race, Strowbridge. It’s all you ever talk about. Even when race isn’t the topic, you find a way to make it the topic.”
This is simply not true. You are lying. In fact, you bring up race more than I do.
Which brings us to…
“Your defensiveness is worse than Obama’s is with Fox News.”
Projection.
You’re overly defensive about my accusations of racism, because you know it’s true.
Your lies about it are clear evidence of that.
This is simply not true. You are lying. In fact, you bring up race more than I do. –Tourette’s Syndrome Ass-clown
Oooo-kay, Strowbridge. Whatever you say, dude.
Me: “This is simply not true. You are lying. In fact, you bring up race more than I do.”
Dennis the Bigot: “Oooo-kay, Strowbridge. Whatever you say, dude.”
Of course you wouldn’t know that. You can’t count past two,
Remember that?
Remember when you said I responded to most of the movie / comic book related threads here and then found two examples… and stopped counting.
Remember that?
This is the same thing here.
Dennis is still around? Some people never tire of getting their virtual ass kicked over and over and over.
Remember when you said I responded to most of the movie / comic book related threads here and then found two examples… and stopped counting. Selective memory Ass-clown
Yeah, I remember. You said you rarely comment on the comic book threads. And the first two I looked at you were a prevalent commenter, so yeah, it proved my point. And talk about being defensive…. sheesh almighty, it was about 6-7 months ago. What a baby you are.
An obsessed, defensive WATB who makes shit up, and obsesses about being called up on it.
An obsessed, defensive WATB who makes shit up, and obsesses about being called up on it.
Now THAT is projection.
Jay, what you are missing is that Obama’s policy platform is extremely popular among African-Americans because they, by and large, reject conservative politics. I think York is incorrect; damn few Black Americans are being dragged into a liberal Democratic world view that were not already there.
What York wants, in his dreams, is a liberal-free nation. I understand this; I want every revanchist Southern apologist and theocrat to move San Antonio and secede, simultaneously increasing the per capita income and the average IQ of the U.S. in one move.
Stay classy, Republicans. And enjoy the death of your party as it becomes the 21st century equivalent of a Klan rally.
Anyone who defends this idiot in his obvious attempt to dismiss the judgment of the African American community with this specious and– YES— Jay and Dennis–RACIST excuse for journalism, needs to sit their ass down or at least hang their heads in shame.
But I don’t think that will be happening anytime soon (the shame part.) So asshats like this will always have a smirking, knuckle dragging, head nodding audience–whining that libs are always seeing racism where there is none.
Unlike Justice Stewart and porn–I can define (racism) AND know it when I see it.
I can’t believe you people still argue with Jay. He’s such a pathetic lost soul. I actually feel lessened whenever I read one of his posts.
Now, lets hope Obama doesn’t cut into “Lost”.
Eric at 4:43 wins the thread. Trolls: The honest ones among you know he’s 100% correct. whether or not you admit it is obviously your choice.
I’m still waiting for someone to make a similar racial take on approval ratings for presidents Nixon, Ford, Reagan, Bush I, Clinton and Bush II.
Stormfront isn’t their fringe, it’s their mainstream
Conservatives think of themselves as the “Real Americans”, so it’s quite natural that any “actual” approval rating of Obama would be one that reflects the views of “real” Americans – who of course all live in “The Heartland” and believe in “American values”. Coincidentally, the closer you are to being the archetype of the reliable Republican voter – a married white male evangelical from the south, the more “real” you probably are.
‘Oh for heaven’s sake, what is wrong about highlighting the disparate numbers in a poll with regard to the answers given by whites vs. blacks? And what is wrong also with pointing out the strong possibility that some in the African-American community are going to give high marks to Obama simply because he is also African-American?’
Ok; I’ll play along.
What’s wrong with it is that it’s completely full of shit. Did people vote for Bush or give him high marks BECAUSE he’s White? Or did he somehow appeal to them because he appeared to be a Christian fundamentalist who shared the values of small minded, isolationist ignoramuses who they wanted to chug beers with?
You might as well claim that men gave him high marks because he has a dick.
‘It’s amazing. There’s nothing wrong with saying that a white person will vote or support a white politician because he’s white and nothing wrong with saying a white man won’t vote for or support a black politician because he’s black….’
Yeah, funny thing about that is; it’s the fucking DEFINITION of racism.
Maybe you should just stop now.
‘Cols714, I agree that York chose poor wording for the point he was trying to make, but even I could see that he was talking about the high base of support Obama gets from the African-American community helping to boost his numbers. In order for York to be tagged as a “racist” then somebody needs to show some kind of pattern in his writing as it relates to such statements.’
How about the fact that nowhere in the piece is a similar reference made to White politicians receiving the same uncritical support from the White electorate, based solely on race.
Starting to see the pattern yet?
‘You’re right. I guess you were talking about the large Eskimo population in those areas.’
The term is Inuit genius; just as ignorant, racist morons prefer the term ‘patriot.’
You know, I’ve been doing some number crunching and I discovered something quite startling. If you subtract from Obama’s base of support those people who are there simply because they support him, then his base of support is not nearly as big as it might otherwise seem.
“jrfunkenstein”, right winger “Jay” really doesn’t understand the definition of racism.
He also apparently doesn’t understand that right wingers like Byron York’s racist nonsense (and it’s defense by right wingers like “Jay”) is a huge part of why African-Americans, and increasingly other minorities, vote disproportionately Democratic.
“Jay,” I’m still convinced that you, yours, and the country are better off with Democratic, even liberal, policies. And I’m still convinced if you really thought it through you would come to the same conclusion.
But if you’re going to keep embarrassing the right wing like you’ve done in this post, please, please keep publicly aligning yourself with the right wing.
You can still vote Democratic in the privacy of the voting booth, though.
‘You can still vote Democratic in the privacy of the voting booth, though’
I wouldn’t hold my breath on that I if were you NR; he’s probably still waiting for the chance to vote for Reagan’s re-animated, zombie corpse.
Me: “Remember when you said I responded to most of the movie / comic book related threads here and then found two examples… and stopped counting.”
Dennis the Bigot: “Yeah, I remember. You said you rarely comment on the comic book threads. And the first two I looked at you were a prevalent commenter, so yeah, it proved my point.”
Ha!
And you call me selective memory.
I showed that the none most recent such threads I only posted in three of them.
Proved your point? It proved you were fucking stupid.
Proved your point? Only if you ignore all evidence to the contrary.
Dennis the Bigot: “An obsessed, defensive WATB who makes shit up, and obsesses about being called up on it.”
Crusty Dem: “Now THAT is projection.”
100% correct.
