I actually tracked down what Limbaugh said. It was SATIRE. He was lampooning how a certain type of person (some of which can be found around here — jr, Strowbridge) might have spun the pirate shootings had they happened under Bush.

If the crewman is wrong, then say he is, but he looks a lot more heroic right now than Limbaugh ever has, and I don’t think Limbaugh will find it in his best interest to denigrate a popular hero.
I agree with you in one sense. Limbaugh should definitely keep talking about this. The First Amendment gives him the right to marginalize himself and reduce his party to old white conspiracy theorists.

If you had the slightest bit of integrity, you’d admit that Limbaugh’s poor joke had a smidgen of truth to it — witness the aftermath of Hurricane Katrina, when Kanye West proclaimed on national TV that “George Bush doesn’t care about black people” and Spike Lee saying that Bush blew up the levees on purpose. It’s not that far a stretch from that to what Limbaugh projected.
But back to the Maersk Alabama’s first mate: he’s a hero. He did a heroic thing. But that doesn’t grant him infallibility — no more than Cindy Sheehan had “absolute moral authority” on the Iraq War or the wartime experiences of Bob Dole or John McCain made them automatically worthy of the presidency.
