“Only Nixon could go to China.”
Because if a Democrat had gone to China and done exactly the same stuff, he would have been a Fellow Traveler appeasing the Communists.
I don’t really see this as IOKITAR. It wasn’t so much that Nixon was a Repub as that he had anti-communist cred so could talk with China at that time and not be seen as having given in to them to do so. It’s based not on some group he belongs to and therefore gets to shelter under their “we do no wrong” umbrella, but on positions he individually had taken for years.

I’m old enough to remember Nixon’s administration. Apparently you read about it in a book or something, because that is just silly What is “anti-communist cred,” and can you give me an example of a president who DIDN’T have it? Nixon pioneered the “big scare” ss a GOP political tool by making a huge deal out of the fear of the “communists” who live among us.
When I was a little kid, I asked my mom if she was voting for Ike.” She said she wasn’t, not because she had a problem with Eisenhower, but because Nixon was a well known crook and had been elected to his first office by smearing his opponent a communist. She said that in 1952, which shows how obvious it already was.
Back to the original question, what was it about Nixon that made IOKIYAR? He was sleazy from day one.
Repack is exactly right about Nixon. If memory serves, he was one of the original members of HUAC. And a giant asshole.
A similar Mom story: One of my earliest memories is standing outside the voting booth in 1960. I was 6 years old. When my Mom emerged, I asked, “Who’d you vote for, Mama?”
Her reply was, “Kennedy. I can’t stand that damn Nixon!”
Oliver’s defending Obama by comparing him to Richard Nixon?
I must have missed that, because there are no points of comparison other than the fact that both men were elected to the presidency. But I saw the part where Oliver called the GOP on its hypocrisy by pointing out that Nixon was their darling while he was meeting with those nasty foreign leaders that they wouldn’t want Obama to meet with. So Oliver was comparing the GOP THEN to the GOP NOW, and you missed the point.
Hmm… Oliver’s defending Obama by comparing him to Richard Nixon? How interesting.
Opening relations with China was probably the greatest accomplishment of Nixon’s presidency, in a presidency that included the EPA, getting out of Vietnam, and the proposed negative income tax (OH TEH SOCIALISM!). I don’t mind that comparison at all, even if it wasn’t intended.
O-Dub, you missed out on the previous version of IOKIYAR, which I am old enough to remember.

But Nixon, now there was an honest, straight-shootin’ guy with international credibility and respect for American ideals.

Cons all have widow’s humps from spending so much time digging memory holes
Hugo Chavez is an unpleasant guy, but he ain’t Mao.
But Republicans, being the bed-wetting cowards that they are in the wake of 9/11, see two types of world leaders: Tony Blair and SCARY BROWN PEOPLE.
“SCARY BROWN PEOPLE”
Unfortunately, that describes their view of Obama too.

Q’elle surprise.
As I said, IOKIYAR.
‘Hmm… Oliver’s defending Obama by comparing him to Richard Nixon? How interesting.’
Where the Hell did you get that?
How you can see anything with your Ronnie Raygun sunglasses and your George Dumbya kaleidoscope vision is beyond me.
