Abraham Lincoln Responds To Texas Governor Rick Perry

10:24 am EST April 16th, 2009 | News | 26 Comments

lincolnIn light of Rick Perry’s insane comments about secession and the conservative fruitcakes actively nodding their heads with him, I offer the words of one of our greatest Presidents, Abraham Lincoln, from his inauguration speech:

Descending from these general principles, we find the proposition that, in legal contemplation, the Union is perpetual, confirmed by the history of the Union itself. The Union is much older than the Constitution. It was formed in fact, by the Articles of Association in 1774. It was matured and continued by the Declaration of Independence in 1776. It was further matured and the faith of all the then thirteen States expressly plighted and engaged that it should be perpetual, by the Articles of Confederation in 1778. And finally, in 1787, one of the declared objects for ordaining and establishing the Constitution, was “to form a more perfect Union.” But if [the] destruction of the Union, by one, or by a part only, of the States, be lawfully possible, the Union is less perfect than before the Constitution, having lost the vital element of perpetuity.

It follows from these views that no State, upon its own mere motion, can lawfully get out of the Union, — that resolves and ordinances to that effect are legally void, and that acts of violence, within any State or States, against the authority of the United States, are insurrectionary or revolutionary, according to circumstances.

Mmmmkay? Mmmmkay.

How can we miss them if they won’t go away?

  2. Duros62 says:

    Soooo, Perry’s an insurrectionist?

Someone should start a recall. Why would you want someone who hates America as governor?

  3. I'm a Hick says:

    Start practicing saying Governor Hutchison.

  4. Dennis says:

When Bush was President, Secession talk was cool
    –Legal Insurrection

Oh, how times have changed. Now talk of secession is treasonous. But it wasn’t that long ago that the Left cheered talk of secession when G.W. Bush was President. I realize the netroots don’t study history, but at least they should remember cheering when Vermont wanted to secede in protest over the Iraq War, global warming, and whatever.

On February 6, 2008, The Huffington Post ran a lengthy article titled “Vermont: Most Likely To Secede?” singing the praises of the secession movement, and noting how far right secessionists (like the Alaska Independence Party) and far left secessionists (like those in Vermont) had found common ground at a conference in Tennessee.…..

While I can find no reference to [Howard]Dean commenting for or against secession, Rick Perry also did not come out in favor of secession. All Perry said is that when people get upset, you never know what can happen. I find it very interesting that Dean was willing to hold forums and votes on the topic, which is a lot more than Perry has done.

    Libs have lousy memories.

Once again, Dennis didn’t bother to click through to the story. Here’s the opening paragraph of that HuffPo article:

Increasingly, I have no fealty to the U.S. government. This has nothing to do with George Bush, bogeyman of the Left, the war in Iraq, or Halliburton, and everything to do with the reasonable assessment that the United States is too big for its own good. Too big in its 300 million people to be represented by 550 mostly millionaire men (not women) in a far-off swamp called Washington, D.C. I therefore have stopped calling myself a U.S. citizen.

  6. rat_bastard says:

You know its completely fucking different when a high ranking elected official starts talking secession, your not really that fucking retarded are you Dennis?

Quaker in a Basement: “Once again, Dennis didn’t bother to click through to the story. Here’s the opening paragraph of that HuffPo article…”

You mean Dennis was wrong about something! That’s unpossible.

rat_bastard: “You know its completely fucking different when a high ranking elected official starts talking secession, your not really that fucking retarded are you Dennis?”

Yes. Yes he is that fucking retarded.

  9. I'm a Hick says:

Over the course of our history, virutually every section of the country has threatened to secede at one time or another. But today, any talk of secesion is so much hyperbole. As someone pointed out on another site, there are legitimate criticisms to current policy. But they have to be addressed with legitimate alternatives – and secession aint one of them. And the same applies to the left. Perry’s original point was that current policies were encroaching on state perrogatives to the point of threatening the 10th Amendment. That’s a debateable point. But if he or anyone else starts hawking secession, that’s not.

  10. merl says:

I haven’t stopped cheering, dumbass, I want them to leave. We’ll build a big fence around the CSA and you crackers can all starve.

  11. C.S.Strowbridge says:

“I haven’t stopped cheering, dumbass, I want them to leave. We’ll build a big fence around the CSA and you crackers can all starve.”

My first thought was, ‘They will never leave.’

Me second thought was. ‘If Texas and Georgia leave, that’s 49 EC votes the Republicans won’t have in 2012. Hell, if Texas leaves, it is likely Oklahoma would leave as well, which is more EC votes gone.

  12. Dennis says:

    Blue states buzz over secession
    –November 9, 2004

Secession, which didn’t work very well when it was tried once before, is suddenly red hot in the blue states. In certain precincts, anyway.

One popular map circulating on the Internet shows the 19 blue states won by Sen. John Kerry — Washington, Oregon, California, Minnesota, Wisconsin, Michigan, Illinois, Maryland and the Northeastern states — conjoined with Canada to form the “United States of Canada.” The 31 red states carried by Mr. Bush are depicted as a separate nation dubbed “Jesusland.” ….

Perhaps most of you guys were too young to remember back that far.

  13. Leota2 says:

“Mama–uncle Rick done broke loose from the bindings again, and now he’s running around in the streets saying he’s the Governor of Texas and talkin’ about seceding.”

  14. Oh my god. The Jesusland map. Jesus Christ, Even Dennis cannot actually be this stupid.

  15. Lorin Rivers says:

Rick “Haircut” Perry is an idiot & a douchebag, grandstanding to get publicity because delusion people in some circles believe he could get elected President. The horror. Imagine, if you will, an even less well-qualified & intelligent President than Bush.

I’m not really from Texas, I’m from Austin (family first moved here in 1870-sumpin).

  16. C.S.Strowbridge says:

Dennis the Bigot: “Perhaps most of you guys were too young to remember back that far.”

Perhaps you are too stupid to recognize a joke when you see it. I’m 100% serious when I say that you might not be not fully human, because you lack whatever higher brain functions needed to process humor. You could fail the Turing test.

By the way, some of the Jesusland maps I’ve seen has Alberta as part of Jesus Land.

  17. Luke says:

Texas left the US years ago in all but name. Nice to see some people finally catching on.

  18. biff3000 says:

With all due respect to President Lincoln’s reasoning, is anyone really going to miss Texas? Or Georgia? These chicken-fried idiots have been dragging this country down since the very beginning. God only knows where we’d be now, if we hadn’t spent the last 150 years beating them into submission and then supporting them financially. http://www.fuckthesouth.com : going on 5 years old, and still true and relevant.

  19. Ah, look, I don’t like the south, but its part of our country. Its easy to caricature the residents – god knows I do – but there are good Americans there. As for Dennis, he can dig up a million links about secession, etc. but he won’t find any Democratic governor or official at Rick Perry’s level or above advocating such a silly thing because we aren’t a bunch of nativist idiots.

  20. Frank says:

Lincoln? Given that when the candidates for the RNC were asked to name their favorite Republican President, they all chose Reagan (and none, by implication chose Lincoln)…

  21. curt says:

Why would Texas be Worried about this part of the Constitution that binds them here when the part that Gave us our Rights and Freedoms Has already been removed, a little taken out in this bill and that one untill, we are all Blind and Slaves….

  22. SaveFarris says:

    Lincoln: most divisive President ever!

  23. Dennis says:

because we aren’t a bunch of nativist idiots. OW

Well, like the blogger said, not anymore. At least the nativist part.

  24. Joe (Texan) says:

The writer to this article needs to read the Constitution of Texas as many of you responding here also. This Great State is still considered a “Republic”. Reason for that is after the Mexican army was defeated and Texas given away, Texas was not part of the US for ten years. During which Texans adopted a constitution which clearly states the right to secede. However, I don’t and believe we would ever secede, but if Washington keeps trying to control states and tearing the US constitution then this option may not be such a bad idea. People do you homework before responding!

  25. Duros62 says:

Shorter Lincoln: Sit the fuck down.

  26. Grumpymann says:

I say if Tx wants to leave the union. LEAVE.

Lets talk about what you are going to pay for the property that belongs to the US?

What are you going to do about visas?

How will we handle the tariffs?

    These are things to consider.
