I don’t think the general public ever viewed Obama as “The new messiah” “The One” or any of the other tags the right-wing and his opponents have tried to hang on him in an kindergarten-level attempt to ridicule because they are incapable of forming a substantive criticism.

At this point the binary question has been framed, directly or otherwise, as a choice between President Barack Obama and Racist Asshole Rush Limbaugh. And racist assholes are, thankfully, becoming less and less fashionable in the U.S.

That’s a pretty accurate reading of what’s going on. Kind of like when Paul Krugman debated Bill O’Reilly on the Tim Russert Show a few years back. Representing Teh Left: an tenured Ivy League Professor and future Nobel Laurette. Representing Teh Right (and the modern Republican party): a self-important racist and sexist reactionary blowhard. That’s where we’re at today. That’s the divide. Reality-based vs. Non-scientific dog-whistle scare mongers. The good guys are currently winning. Hopefully that trend will continue.

Why don’t you go look up the numbers regarding the self-identification of political party?
