You can’t be stupid enough to not understand how lynching is part of black history, and not a happy part. Perhaps he’s stupid enough to not come up with a better phrase.
Y’know, I’m gonna dissent here. There are differences between lynchings and hangings. Not every black man who died by hanging was lynched.
On the gaffe meter, I don’t give this more than a 2 out of 10.
I’m more taken with the list of morons that pass for Republican “thinkers” these days.
Does anyone really think Dick Morris is the guy to lead Republicans back to power? Limbaugh? Cantor and Boehner?
They are doomed, and it’s almost too much fun to watch.
So essentially he’s saying, in a racially unacceptable way, “since the Republicans have no plan we’re just going to have to hope Obama screws up to regain power”.
I’ll remember that next time I race the motorcycle- “Nah, you go ahead and ring your bike out. I’m just gonna sit here and hope you blow your engine.”

References to black people and hanging bring up some ugly historical issues. This isn’t really a case I’ll care too much about but hey, feel free to continue thinking that black people are going to start voting Republican any day now.

Maybe I’m being a little puerile but I’ve never seen Mr. Morris, just hear him on the radio. It looks like to me that he’s got Rush way up his ass. Just an observation from my igloo.
I’m gonna have to agree with Spider here – Morris used a poorly considered turn of phrase, but I don’t think he ever intended it as a dog whistle, even subconsciously.
However, the idea that Republicans are going to sit back and do nothing during one of the worst financial crises in our history, and hope that the President fails, is disgusting enough without any racist overtones.

They are “conservative pundit” central and they are going to ride that out until America gets sick of the so called “liberal” agenda.
Dick Morris is just as annoying as Limbaugh, Hannity and Beck – he is nothing but face value rhetoric.
As far as Republicans wanting black votes, they can care less about them (black votes) – Michael Steele was placed in the forefront simply because he cried and whined enough and they got sick of it.
They are still the new version of the Dixie Democrats and nothing will change until they start implementing/campaigning core political philosophical differences, instead of trying to legislate morals!
In other words they need to learn to stick with true politics – either you are for spending or you are not and if you are against spending!? Practice what you preach!

The fake outrage is getting old folks. Maybe the allegation would have some sting to it if wasn’t thrown around 80 times a day towards comments like the one Morris made that obviously weren’t meant to be bigoted in any way. It’s a very old saying. Cliche even. Quit being a p***ie.

Me too. The expression is not racial in nature. We need to be a little bit more, I don’t know, circumspect whenever anyone uses the words rope, string, hang, etc, etc. maybe they don’t mean it in a racially charged way. Maybe they do. But if we just jump to the conclusion that that is what they mean every single time, we end up looking reactionary. We need to be PREactionary. ABC. Always be closing.

OK, I have to say that the phrase “let him hang himself” is way to common and specific in it’s meaning to be considered racist. We all use it, so there’s no issue here just because a turd like Dick Morris uses it.
The issue here should really be why no one brings up old Dick’s hooker foot smelling episodes when he worked for Clinton. That’s what I see every time I see Dick.
He’s a Faux News clown, a has-been who means nothing to anybody but his pay-for-play whores.
“Circumspect” is the word for it. When we gin up outrage over relatively benign moments like this, it makes it harder for us to point out the genuinely blatant racism that is still occurring even though Obama’s election meant racism was over.
The nooses that were hung from trees to scare black students some time ago, that’s what we save our outrage for. Kelly Tilghman making a comment that younger golf pros should get together and “lynch” Tiger Woods, that’s a genuine moment of outrage.
“Give him enough rope to hang himself” references self-inflicted death, not lynching. It’s a perfectly valid phrase to use against an opponent of any race; heaven knows we find instances of conservative pundits who seem to be making a killing in the self-hanging rope business.

Honestly, my first thought on reading OW’s headline was, “great, another Republican obstructionist a$$hat hoping Obama fails. What a tool.”
I’m throwing my hat in with Spider, Southern Quaker and a few others. I’m aware of the history of blacks and lynchings. I’m also aware of the ubiquitousness of the idiom “giving them enough rope to hang themself”. And I don’t see that one using such a common idiom immediately proves or even implies a racist context. IMHO, folks are a bit too quick to play the victim.
I wasn’t aware that hookers’ toes were so high in calories that Morris would end up looking as bloated as Limbaugh.
I think everyone is pretty much overreacting.
No one would be complaining if he was white.
