In 2006 and 2008 conservatives – ones posting comments on this site – regularly said that Bush’s approval rating didn’t matter because, after all, he couldn’t run for a third time. I mean, why would the approval of the sitting president have any connection to his party’s fortunes? So, there’s a pattern of stupidity from the right on issues like this.

No matter how many times Oliver quotes polls, it still won’t change the fact that Rush isn’t actually running for anything.

You know, I try not to use the word “stupid” on other people very often, but I’ll use it in this context…surely you can’t be so stupid as to believe that just because Rush isn’t “running for anything” that it means he lacks the ability to influence the Republican agenda?

If “running for anything” were a metric of power and importance, then members of the Republican Party–people who actually did run for something–who criticized him wouldn’t be apologizing the next day.

He’s the member of the party with (a) the most visibility and (b) the loudest bullhorn. I’d add that he also seems to be the only one with any original ideas, even if those ideas are only about the best way to make fun of, oh, let’s see what the wheel says today. Rape victims? Crying babies? One-eyed puppies?

19% of the population can make you rich on the radio, but it won’t get you elected dogcatcher. Limbaugh has never actually accomplished anything that wasn’t just talk, and he lacks the courage to stand up for his empty talk against anyone who disagrees with him, so we will never have to worry about him disgracing an elected office.

Farris, if an influential Democrat had a drug problem that had left permanent physical damage, three failed marriages, had gone on sex tours with a year’s supply of someone else’s Viagra, and had committed a few felonies, would the GOP make an issue of it?

Of course not. It’s just being, you know, human.

She is the Speaker of the House.

He’s a talk show host.

One’s a radio broadcaster whose job is to get people listening, even if they listen because they disagree and want to be outraged.

One’s a politician who depends on people liking him enough to A) donate to his campaign and B) win votes.

Let’s measure them using the same metric!!!

Nah. I’m sure a significant part of that 19% don’t listen to Rush regularly or for more than a commute-time span of his program. I’m sure they’ve formed their opinions without actually having spent much time with what they are opining on, as blowhards tend to do. (“Seen the movie? Of course not. Why would I do that? I just know it should be banned, that’s all.”)

I bet that 19% correlates pretty well with people who call themselves “politically incorrect” but are really racist and sexist assholes. Or (publicly) deny that Rush would ever say something like “take that bone out of your nose” or any other wildly racist or sexist or otherwise offensive dogshit Limbaugh’s spewed over the years.
