Comments Issues

I’m not seeing the disappearing comment issues others are occasionally seeing, but a way around it seems to be logging in to the site versus just posting a comment.

Very well. I’ll give it a try.

I had been avoiding the registration hassle since your last makeover. Not that it takes all that much time.

    Well.

    That was unintended.

Where does one find their WP login info?

  5. Bruce Henry says:

The problem I keep seeing is this: Sometimes, there are no apostrophes, just a bunch of wierd symbols where the apostrophes should be. It looks almost like cartoon cursing. It’s not every time, but most of the time.

I don’t think it’s my computer, because it only happens here, not on other sites.

  6. Quaker in a Basement says:

OW, there’s some sort of weirdness going on with character encoding. It looks like we’re getting crossed up between ISO and UTF encoding somewhere.

  7. Quaker in a Basement says:

    Maybe this is relevant?

  8. Sean D. Martin says:

Some time back my name/mail info stopped being retained and I had to re-type it for each comment I’d post. Didn’t think anything had changed on my end, Oliver said nothing had changed on his. Chalk it up to Internet oddities.

Now, as of about a week or so ago (?), name/mail are being retained. Oliver’s site is always full of such interesting surprises…

  9. Michael Over Here says:

Work’s fine on the new Safari.

As long as we’re talking about that administration stuff, how do I set up a user icon?

  10. Parthenon says:

    Michael –

    gravatar.com

It will walk you through it.

  11. Michael Over Here says:

    Hm… Test?

  12. Parthenon says:

    There it is!

But what is it? The side of a skull?

  13. Michael Over Here says:

Hehe, it’s a picture of my old ‘57 Chevy… I need to find something more iconic.

Same here. Both on my work Mac and home PC. Both on Firefox.

I call that an IDTS event*.

  15. SFC B says:

I keep getting something where, it just stops a comment after the first sentence or two. It looks fine in preview but disappears when posting. Originally though I was leaving a tag open or something like that. Nope. Just being disappeared.

  16. Quaker in a Basement says:

SFC, it’s happening on text that’s copied from another comment, correct? And the cut comes where there should be an apostrophe or quote mark?

  17. Parthenon says:

If I post something longer than a sentence, I’ve taken to copying it before posting so I can paste it if need be. I suppose logging in would save the step…

  18. SFC B says:

Yes it is. That’s exactly where it’s coming from.

  19. Quaker in a Basement says:

When I look at the apostrophes in the comments, they appear as slanted apostrophes. After I cut and paste them, if I retype the apostrophes and quote marks as straight-up-and-down characters, there’s no problem. It’s something to do with character encoding, but that’s only my guess.

  20. Quaker in a Basement says:

Testing with Firefox 3, not logged in.

It’s something to do with character encoding, but that’s only my guess.

Testing with Firefox 3, not logged in. Curse you, Microsoft!

  22. Quaker in a Basement says:

    Is it an IE7 thing?

Has anyone had this problem who is NOT using IE7?

  23. SFC B says:

    I’m using IE6.

  24. Jay Tea says:

I’ve had no problems posting comments, either.

I almost feel like I should apologize for that, however…

    J.

  25. Quaker in a Basement says:

Aha! Now when I return to IE7, I see the pasted text, but the apostrophes are replaced with a string of odd characters: an a with a mark above it, a euro sign, a trademark superscript.

  26. Quaker in a Basement says:

Mr. Tea, what browser are you using?

  27. Jay Tea says:

Sorry, Quaker — I said it first, but then edited it out for poor phrasing and forgot to put the reference back in. Firefox 3, on Windows XP SP2.

I avoid IE as much as possible.

    J.

  28. Quaker in a Basement says:

Testing with new settings in IE7:

It’s something to do with character encoding, but that’s only my guess.

    New settings in IE7?!?

  30. So I did something on my end with quotes and comments, and that might fix things. Let me know (should work on posts after 5:40pm est today).

    One more test?

  32. Quaker in a Basement says:

I changed the default web page font in IE7 to Arial Unicode. That seems to have fixed the problem for me.

I did this by going to Tools/Internet Options and choosing the Fonts button. In the window on the left, I changed the default webpage font to Arial Unicode MS, then clicked OK.

I closed and restarted IE7. Seems to be OK now.

  33. Michael Over Here says:

Hm, I updated my icon on gravatar but it’s not updating here. Maybe it takes a couple of hours for the changes to seed throughout the internet orchard.

  34. Yeah that seems to be a bug from Gravatar. I tried to change mine months ago and its not “taking”.

  35. Michael Over Here says:

Heh, guess I’m stuck with my snowy ‘57 for a while.

  36. Duros62 says:

I’ve had no problems posting comments, either.

I almost feel like I should apologize for that, however…

Well, it’s about time you did.

    I keed, I keed! :-)

Heh, guess I’m stuck with my snowy ‘57 for a while.

I haven’t seen a ‘57 from you at all. Some guy with a beard and Mila Jovovich’s hair.

  37. Michael Over Here says:

Oh wait, it updated finally. I deleted the other image from gravatar completely and then gave it a day.

  38. Michael Over Here says:

    He’s a little daruma, hehe.
