Growing Impotence On The Religious Right

A few days ago Tony Perkins of the Family Research Council sent out an email blast trying to whip up opposition to David Ogden, president Obama’s nominee for Deputy Attorney General. Always temperate, Perkins called Ogden a “porn advocate” for his previous work for Playboy. Also chiming in were the Concerned Women for America who sent out an action alert calling Ogden a “porn lawyer”, and the Alliance Defense fund also pushed FRC’s message to their email lists.

Ogden was confirmed today by the senate 62-28.

Should be very interesting to see if the religious right has gone completely limp with the upcoming nomination of Kathleen Sebelius for Sec. of Health.

Would hardly consider Playboy porn, anymore.

I’d like to personally take a smidgen of the credit for blocking the Freeman nomination to chairman of the National Intelligence Council, on behalf of Commentary Magazine. I, personally, did nothing about it, but my colleagues there did yeoman’s work on exposing that asshole’s sordid past.

What the FUCK was the Obama administration thinking when they put him up for such a key role, anyway? He almost makes Dan Quayle and Harriet Myers look like plausible choices!

Sordid past, huh? Cementing your reputation as a douchenozzle, I see.

Calling him a Porn Lawyer makes me support him more.

We need more porn and less religion.

If you got a better description of Chas Freeman’s history, Calvin, offer it up. The guy has NO business anywhere near governmental power, and you gotta wonder what the fuck Obama and his people were thinking when they almost put him in an incredibly powerful and sensitive position.

I worked under David Ogden on matters completely unrelated to publishing, i.e. in (very broadly defined, cannot get specific) antitrust work. Ogden is a partner (or is for the moment until he cashes out) at one of the most respected law firms on the planet, and he was totally a gentleman, respectful of his employees and subordinates while maintaining very high standards, quick as a whip and happens also to be enjoyable, engaging company. He’s no John Ashcroft, which fact is enough to make me want to walk over to Immaculate Conception parish down the street and light a candle in thanks.

I cannot say more without betraying client confidences, but this business of him being a “porn lawyer” is pretty hilarious. I realize that some on the right are longing for the days of Ed The Meese, but Ogden is a class act as far as I am concerned, and evokes not Hugh Hefner in person, but Hefner’s slightly geeky but brilliant corporate attorney (which he apparently was at some point, not my bailiwick.)

I would be curious to see what Ogden’s appointment and now confirmation mean to U.S. antitrust policy. Again, I would love to speculate further, but cannot without getting too deep into confidential work.

    “I hate Meese’s to pieces!”

I’m gonna whomp up Ed Meese, with that Wolf leg bone!
