I saw a cartoon yesterday (don’t remember where) that summed it up for me perfectly; I didn’t want Bush to fail. I just watched in stunned disbelief as he did it all on his own.
Aw, man, you mean that Fox News story is a buncha bullshit? Dang. I thought this time for sure it would be some real hardhitting, responsible journalism. Color me disillusioned.
Silly rabbit, ed.
Aw, man, you mean that Fox News story is a buncha bullshit? Dang. I thought this time for sure it would be some real hardhitting, responsible journalism. Color me disillusioned. Mister ed
Where do you get that the Fox News story was bullshit? The link to Washington Monthly doesn’t say anything like that, Mister ed. Amazing how you read what you want to read and interpret it completely differently that what was said. The story doesn’t even argue the point that liberals wanted Bush to fail, it was about Carville and whether or not it was a double standard.
Reading comprehension, Mr. ed. You need to work on it.
Where do you get that the Fox News story was bullshit?
Hmm. Where did you get that the Fox News story was bullshit? The Fox News story. Hmm. I can’t remember where I got the idea in my head that the Fox News story was bullshit. Now where would one get that idea, anyway?
Dennis, don’t you dare invoke my name.
The story doesn’t even argue the point that liberals wanted Bush to fail, it was about Carville and whether or not it was a double standard.
No, only points out that Fox is using an out of context quote to suggest that Carville wanted Bush to fail before he heard about 9-11.
After, 9-11, Carville retracted the comment because the country was suddenly facing a crisis.
That’s not exactly how Limbaugh approached the issue.
No, Limbaugh is hoping for a catastrophe.
Dennis: Amazing how you read what you want to read and interpret it completely differently that what was said. The story doesn’t even argue the point that liberals wanted Bush to fail, it was about Carville and whether or not it was a double standard.
And the conclusion was: No, it isn’t. Carville’s out of context general statement “I certainly hope he doesn’t succeed.” which he immediately rescinded when the nation faced a crisis isn’t at all equivalent to Limbaugh’s “I want him to fail” which he has repeated several times.
If the context is all of a sudden important to you guys, (which in Oliver’s case, only is important when’s defending liberals) then wouldn’t you need to honestly evaluate Limbaugh’s comments? He was quite clear in saying that he thinks that a number of Obama’s policies are bad for the country, and thus he wants Obama to fail in the implementation of those policies. Or are you honestly going to try to claim that you didn’t feel exactly the same way about Bush and some, maybe all, of his policies?
He was quite clear in saying that he thinks that a number of Obama’s policies are bad for the country, and thus he wants Obama to fail in the implementation of those policies.
What do you, or did he, mean by implementation? You passed into law? Or once passed into law, that they fail in their application? Sort of a difference.
In 2001, in a time of crisis, even the most die-hard Democrats changed direction and said they hoped a conservative Republican president succeeded. And in 2009, in the midst of another crisis, die-hard Republicans are still putting party and ideology above patriotism.
This is ridiculously stupid. For anybody to think that a recession (we’re not in the midst of a “crisis”) and the remedies for it is the same as what Bush had to face in the wake of the attacks on 9/11 is just absurd. It’s stupid and anybody…ANYBODY who believes it is a valid comparison is a moron, plain and simple.
In addition, in the midst of SOME good will was a long chorus of Democratic and left wing jackasses more than happy to blame the entire thing on President Bush.
The Washington Monthly lost the only thing worth reading when Kevin Drum left for Mother Jones.
When Carville was speaking, Bush’s agenda was undoing the progress, programs, and priorities that Clinton made.
9-11 was just a by-product of a Bush success in undoing some of CLinton’s policies and priorities.
The rest of Bush’s miserable time as president is viewed as a series of epic failures by most of the nation, however, most were just the inevitable results of a series of successful policy implementations by Bush. Most of us measured the results by how they negatively impacted the country. Bush measured the results by how they impacted his friends and donors. Apples to rotten tomatoes.
He was quite clear in saying…
…over and over that he wanted Obama to fail. Stop covering for him and pretending otherwise.
Perhaps you should honestly evaluate:

Maybe they’re taken out of context. Asshole.

Ergo, Rush Limbaugh is correct to want Obama to fail? Huh? (Oh, and the Fox News story is still bullshit, anyway. Dumbass.)
we’re not in the midst of a “crisis”
Yes, huge bank failures, rising unemployment and people losing their homes at an alarming rate is just business as fucking usual.
>What do you, or did he, mean by implementation? You passed into law?
You’d have to ask him, but my personal answer would be passed into law. A number of Obama’s economic policies are standard fare liberal wishful thinking – and surely destined to cause misery. So I want Obama to fail to enact them. That is exactly what Limbaugh said, (though by using the word ‘fail’, he is certainly being provocative in his choice of words) and that is exactly what you guys said when, say, Bush tried to reform Social Security. It’s obvious that what you’re trying to do – paint what Limbaugh said as some sort of outside the pale commentary compared to your own behavior over the last 8 years. Give me a break.

>over and over that he wanted Obama to fail. Stop covering for him and pretending otherwise.
Even though that’s generalizing what he said, I have to say, so? How is this different than what you wanted Bush to do over the last 8 years? The premise of this post is laughable – liberals didn’t want Bush to fail. Right. Newsflash – when a president is going to try to put a policy in place that you think is going to make things worse, you probably want him to fail, regardless of which side of the aisle you are on. Your faux outrage is pathetic.
Wanting the Bush Recession to end as quickly as possible is a universal good for Americans and the world. Only people as partisan and ideologically blinded as the Republican party could possibly be rooting against America and President Obama right now. But they are, thanks to their leader Rush “I hope he fails” Limbaugh.
Telling Bush that his occupation of Iraq was too expensive and at best would lead to a pro-Iranian, anti-Israel Iraq that would set the Middle East back decades was not hoping he failed, it was simply telling him the truth.
Big difference.
He was quite clear in saying that he thinks that a number of Obama’s policies are bad for the country, and thus he wants Obama to fail in the implementation of those policies.
I know it’s hard to get it through your heads that Obama doesn’t want to DESTROY AMERICA!!!
Obama’s stated intentions are to pull us out of the economic crisis. Wishing for those intentions to fail is to wish a continued economic crisis. The only reason to wish a continued economic crisis is (a) blackhearted apathy towards your fellow Americans for whom the crisis is a daily struggle, or (b) you just don’t want a Democrat to be in power if the crisis gets solved, which is a cynical, party-first mentality along the lines of Patrick McHenry.
Say you and Obama are in a locked room with no windows. You say that the best way out of the room is to force down the door by ramming it repeatedly. Obama says that he might be able to pick the lock with his cufflink.
He lets you ram the door for eight years straight and the door doesn’t open. For you to then stand over Obama’s shoulder wishing that he fails is little more than childish spite and it won’t get you out of the room.
Obama
Obamas stated intentions are to pull us out of the economic crisis. Wishing for those intentions to fail is to wish a continued economic crisis.
Unless… you think Obama’s methods for solving said problem will only serve to exacerbate the crisis. Something Limbaugh is on record as believing.
(Why did my first post get eaten?)
That is exactly what Limbaugh said
Except it isn’t. Oh, and Rush Limbaugh is a racist asshole. Spin that.
and that is exactly what you guys said when, say, Bush tried to reform Social Security
Um, Haplo9, you may wish to avoid mentioning George Bush, Jr.’s plan to put Social Security into the stock market back in 2005.
Like I said, I never wanted W. to fail. He did it all on his own.
I guess that’s an accomplishment.
Unless… you think Obama’s methods for solving said problem will only serve to exacerbate the crisis. Something Limbaugh is on record as believing.
Then you say “I believe his policies will fail.” You don’t say “I want his policies to fail.” Unless, that is, you are a spiteful blowhard like Rush Limbaugh.
