Conan O’Brien Gets Screwed By Jay Leno

conan o'brienHe’s not the first in late night tv to have that happen to him (see Letterman, David) but at the end of the day I feel Conan’s Tonight Show will outlive Jay’s talk show in primetime in how much it actually impacts culture.

I watched a couple minutes of Leno the other day and the big comedy bit was Jay finding “wacky” items on Ebay then seeing if they actually sold or not. Really. And it isn’t like Jay doesn’t know what’s funny. When he used to sub for Johnny Carson he was genuinely humorous. But then he got the Tonight Show and got safe, safe even by the standards of network tv. And safe = stale.

    So, wait. Leno’s going to 10PM Monday through Friday?

    What, once ER is over they got nothing? That’ll be a whole lot of suck.
    I’m with you, Oliver. it’s stale. And i can’t stand Jason Eubanks.
    Good thing Olberman’s rebroadcast is at 10.

    Yeah…the sad thing is that the middle-aged people who actually like Leno’s show will just tune into the new one at 10pm and then go to sleep. Is it wrong that I get annoyed with people when they say they don’t find Conan funny? Leno used to be really funny and still can pull out the stops as a stand-up, but he’s torched his credibility as a comedian and entertainer.

    My only hope is that Conan doesn’t water himself down too much with the earlier slot. I did run into a very funny comic I know named Anthony Jeselnik, who is writing for Jimmy Fallon, so that show may actually be remotely watchable.

    You want to freak out a person under the age of, oh let’s say early 30s? Tell ‘em you remember a time when Jay Leno was funny. Tho’ true, they’ll never believe you, and with good reason.

    Jay Leno’s jokes sound like someone who has heard other people tell jokes so they’re in the correct beat pattern they’re just not funny. “Daa da da daa da da daa… dedededededee…”

    I can still remember when Johnny actually had people like Gore Vidal, WIlliam Buckley and other intellectuals on who actually discussed relevant issues. That went out the window when Leno took over. Now it’s all mindless BS, EXCEPT when Jay whores for his Republican pals.

    I shut the Tonight Show off for good when Jay whored endlessly for Arnold during the recall. Jay showed his true whore self then and it permanently turned me off.
