Southern GOP Governors Get Set To Screw Their States

7:36 pm EST February 18th, 2009 | News | 9 Comments

My guess is that the GOP governors saying they won’t take stimulus money is just more posturing. But the really lame part of it is that they want to pick and choose getting federal money without the strings attached. Sorry, that isn’t how it works. Just like how highway funding is tied to drinking ages, you don’t get fed bucks for free.

And if they really do refuse? Well, as the rest of the states recover, the states with these cornpone governors will probably make some stimulative decisions at the ballot box.

Great plan. Run with that, fellas.

It’s theater. No way a governor could run for his next election by claiming “I helped this state not create any jobs!”

They’ll happily come over and slurp from the trough when the dust settles.

Jindal just wants some good sound-bites for a future presidential run.

grandstanding. my cousin told me he got elected in the first place because he was the best of a bad bunch.
they don’t much care for catholics or indians in most of Louisiana.

Southern, OW? Last I checked Idaho and Alaska are somewhere north of the Mason-Dixon line. And there’s this:

Florida Gov. Charlie Crist lobbied for the stimulus plan and Georgia Gov. Sonny Perdue has embraced it as he looks to close a $2.6 billion deficit in the state’s budget this year. Alabama Gov. Bob Riley has already figured the money into his state’s budget.

Let’s not paint with quite so broad a brush, ‘kay? Might I suggest “Conservative Pin-Head Governors” as a better headline?

All banks didn’t take TARP money so as not to be under the Federal hammer. Maybe some state governors are reacting the same way??

They all will clutch their pearls while taking the money. Another example of Republicans putting party above the people they represent.

Of course, if any governor who spoke out against the porkfest accepted any money, they’d never be called hypocrites, right?

    Nice geography lesson, Quaker.

Also, I hear that there is a provision in Porkfest ’09 that allows state legislatures to apply for and take the money over their governor’s objections — so much for the 10th Amendment, I guess. Nice of Congress to rewrite the laws of the several states for their own purposes.
