Big budget superhero movies are still somewhat reliant on comic fandom to get the hype ball rolling when promoting the film. If this fiasco ever gets made, I don’t think Ratner or Reliance are prepared for the shitstorm of fanboy HATE this movie would unleash.

I look forward to the debacle.

Seriously, if anyone thinks this is a good idea, Google Rob Liefeld’s bible stories.

If anyone continues to think it’s a good idea, find and read Xtreme Sacrifice. (In which a member of Youngblood dies, then suddenly realizes he’s the king of Hell, and then a bunch of stupid stuff that makes no sense happens until a baby grows to adulthood in 20 minutes and kills him.)

If anyone hasn’t gouged their eyes out by then, find that page he wrote where Jesus gets off the cross and proceeds to get into a fistfight with the Greek gods.

If at that point anyone still thinks adapting Youngblood is a good idea (unless it’s the all too short lived Alan Moore version-still pissed off that Supreme was unfinished.) I’m pretty sure that person is Rob Liefeld.

Back in my teen years, I bought EVERYTHING Image cranked out. Would that I had that money back now. WildC.A.T.S. was great. Cyberforce still stands up as some of the most beautiful art I’ve ever seen (Ballistic, anyone). Even early Stormwatch had its moments (though Battalion’s inner monologue was at times maddening). I could never get into Spawn, though I understand his appeal. However, everything Liefeld touched was crap. Youngblood, NeXtMen, etc. And, sorry all you Cable fanboys, but that character should have had the coat-hanger taken to him in the womb. What a blemish on the X-Men franchise.

Liefeld is the sole reason for the whole Cable/Stryfe mess in Marvel. Back then, all of his male characters looked the same and when one of the editors caught him doing Cable and Stryfe, they mentioned the similarities. Some idiot went, “Hmmmm…” and the rest is history.

Meanwhile: Green Lantern, Wonder Woman, Generation X and Dr. Strange languish in Production Hell. Sigh.

I’ve met Rob Liefeld once. He was a bit of a douche. I also considered him one of the most overrated artists at the time I was collecting comics.

At the same time I met Todd McFarlane, which was at the peak of his popularity. He seemed quite nice. Apologized for not being able to spend more time with his fans, but the small Comic Convention he was at attracted more people than they were expecting. And not 30% to 50% more people, but three to five times more people.
