Rob Liefeld Youngblood Movie To Be Directed By Brett Ratner, Comic Movies Jump The Shark

youngbloodSeriously. Youngblood?

Reliance inked a development deal with Ratner’s shingle Rat Entertainment, as well as Julia Roberts’ Red Om Films, during the Berlin film fest.

The company paid mid six figures for the rights to ‘Youngblood,’ about a superhero team sanctioned and overseen by the U.S. government.

I concede I was part of the problem in the ’90s. I bought a lot of stuff with cool art and crap writing, but Youngblood?

(And look, I concede that I still like Liefeld’s art. But Youngblood is a badly written and conceived entity. If you’re gonna option something from the ’90s, why not WildCATS? Jim Lee, I still swoon for thee.)

OK, a bit off-topic, but since this is a comics thread (and I can’t bring myself to write about Rob Liefeld, and also because I know you are a fellow Spidey geek (:)– any thoughts on Marvel’s ComicCon announcement that they’re cancelling ULTIMATE SPIDER-MAN, then rebooting the whole Ultimate U. with some new storylines and origins?

    http://www.comicbookresources.com/?page=article&id=19918

    Here’s the relevant passage:

Quesada then announced that Marvel is canceling “Ultimate Spider-Man,” to which Bendis responded, “No! No! We are done, professionally, man!”

Quesada then clarified that the entire Ultimate line will be cancelled, sent off with a number of “Requiem” specials, and re-launched as Ultimate Comics.

There will be an “Ultimate Comics Spider-Man” written by Bendis with artwork by David LaFuente. “David’s an amazing artist,” said Bendis. “He did the Hellcat book this year. This is his first time going to series and he’s awesome. After the events of Ultimatum, there will be a bit of a time-jump, there will be a new cast of characters. Maybe a new person in the costume. All the questions will be answered in issue #1.”

“LeFuente is the next big artistic breakout talent,” Quesada said.

  2. Hadn’t heard that. That’s stupid. Doesn’t that violate the whole point behind Ultimate Spider-Man?

  3. Jaim says:

I’m a pretty big nerd, and I’ve never heard of Youngblood before. Not exactly the best way to capitalize on a brand.

  4. Peter says:

You like Liefeld’s art? Good god, why? The man can’t draw feet. Or fingers. Or any part of a woman’s torso below the breasts and above the groin.

There is evidence of this, laboriously compiled.

  5. frinklin says:

The Liefeld/Ratner Axis is another sign the apocalypse is upon us. Time to head to the hills and stock up the bottled water.

  6. C.S.Strowbridge says:

I’ve met Rob Liefeld once. He was a bit of a douche. I also considered him one of the most overrated artists at the time I was collecting comics.

At the same time I met Todd McFarlane, which was at the peak of his popularity. He seemed quite nice. Apologized for not being able to spend more time with his fans, but the small Comic Convention he was at attracted more people than they were expecting. And not 30% to 50% more people, but three to five times more people.

  7. Walker says:

Ratner is claiming he is working on this because all of the major graphic novels are gone. If that is true, where is my Sandman DVD? Though I guess it is a saving grace that he did not consider that one.

  8. Pryme says:

Liefeld is the sole reason for the whole Cable/Stryfe mess in Marvel. Back then, all of his male characters looked the same and when one of the editors caught him doing Cable and Stryfe, they mentioned the similarities. Some idiot went, “Hmmmm…” and the rest is history.

Meanwhile: Green Lantern, Wonder Woman, Generation X and Dr. Strange languish in Production Hell. Sigh.

  9. C.S.Strowbridge says:

“Ratner is claiming he is working on this because all of the major graphic novels are gone.”

    That’s a ringing endorsement.

  10. Joe says:

Back in my teen years, I bought EVERYTHING Image cranked out. Would that I had that money back now. WildC.A.T.S. was great. Cyberforce still stands up as some of the most beautiful art I’ve ever seen (Ballistic, anyone). Even early Stormwatch had its moments (though Battalion’s inner monologue was at times maddening). I could never get into Spawn, though I understand his appeal. However, everything Liefeld touched was crap. Youngblood, NeXtMen, etc. And, sorry all you Cable fanboys, but that character should have had the coat-hanger taken to him in the womb. What a blemish on the X-Men franchise.

Link to site criticizing Liefeld’s art. Pretty funny (funny cuz it’s true):

  11. Frowny McBeard says:

Seriously, if anyone thinks this is a good idea, Google Rob Liefeld’s bible stories.

If anyone continues to think it’s a good idea, find and read Xtreme Sacrifice. (In which a member of Youngblood dies, then suddenly realizes he’s the king of Hell, and then a bunch of stupid stuff that makes no sense happens until a baby grows to adulthood in 20 minutes and kills him.)

If anyone hasn’t gouged their eyes out by then, find that page he wrote where Jesus gets off the cross and proceeds to get into a fistfight with the Greek gods.

If at that point anyone still thinks adapting Youngblood is a good idea (unless it’s the all too short lived Alan Moore version-still pissed off that Supreme was unfinished.) I’m pretty sure that person is Rob Liefeld.

  12. SpiderJ says:

But here’s the important question for Ratner to figure out:

Where are you going to find actors with biceps twice the size of their heads?

  13. Joe says:

“But here’s the important question for Ratner to figure out:

Where are you going to find actors with biceps twice the size of their heads?”

…actors with biceps twice the size of their heads…and feet the size of Geishas.

  14. Athenae says:

Re: that cover. Wow. Boobs don’t work that way.

    Anatomy doesn’t work that way.

    NOTHING works that way.

    A.

  15. ArC says:

Liefeld’s art is a crime against art.

  16. Luv says:

Youngblood sucked so much ass that I don’t even know where to begin.

And Ratner did a damned good job with X-Men 3. But this movie shouldn’t be made.

  17. Duros62 says:

    Forget Wildcats. How about THUNDERCATS?

    Yeah, no.

  18. Grandjester says:

I remember this abortion, let’s see… The not Cable guy, the not Bishop guy, the not so much Longshot guy, the no it’s not Colossus guy, the sorta looks like Deadpool guy and the chick that isn’t Domino and/or Psylocke. That about right?

  19. Andrew says:

OTOH, the pic you have up features Suprema. Granted, it is Liefeld, but I loved Alan Moore’s take on Supreme and Suprema.

  20. Duros62 says:

The Thundercats movie is in pre-production.

    Wha..? Fuck! I was kidding!

  21. C.S.Strowbridge says:

OW: “The Thundercats movie is in pre-production.”

Duros62 says: “Wha..? Fuck! I was kidding!”

They are making a Candy Land movie. There’s talk of making another Clue movie. They might be making a Stretch Armstrong movie.

  22. rjpb says:

Big budget superhero movies are still somewhat reliant on comic fandom to get the hype ball rolling when promoting the film. If this fiasco ever gets made, I don’t think Ratner or Reliance are prepared for the shitstorm of fanboy HATE this movie would unleash.

I look forward to the debacle.
