How The Conservative Mind Works

Black president? Ok, then let’s attack the stimulus bill as a “reparations bill“. Then feign ignorance when someone points this out. Sigh.

FLASHBACK: WSJ’s Taranto falsely suggested that Obama gave “something of an endorsement” to cash payments as reparations for slavery

WHAT freakin’ mind?! They’re (almost) all robots controlled by Rush.

  2. riffle says:

Glenn Reynolds is such a disgusting amoral shitbag.

I guess if he had a free-enterprise job rather than a sinecure he may feel the economic disquiet that millions of Americans feel now. Since he doesn’t, he can smear people with racist bullshit (The subtext here is: “See, the negro wants to give money just to negroes!”) .

All this after his Great Leader Bush fiddled while the financial system broke.

  3. ed says:

Somewhere in deepest Hell, Lee Atwater is smiling and nodding.

  4. SpiderJ says:

Atwater had the stones to publicly repent before he died. Whether or not he’s in hell, if he’s smiling and nodding it’s because he Told Them So.

  5. MobiusKlein says:

It gets even worse when you get to page Glenn linked to. Don’t go, just make SadlyNo go for you.

The more things change, the more Republicans stay the same.

  8. ed says:

Atwater had the stones to publicly repent before he died.

Stones? Are you serious? The guy was on his deathbed trying to burnish his image? Not exactly a profile in courage. Too little, too late don’t feed the bulldog, dig?

  9. SpiderJ says:

Fair point. Still, I give “too little, too late” a slightly higher place on the moral pecking order than “didn’t regret a thing,” which is where Falwell was and I’m sure Cheney will end up.

  10. Haplo9 says:

Um, not that you guys are likely to listen, but the word “reparation” has a rather long history, much of which has nothing to do with the concept of racial reparations. I know that its enjoyable to decide on what meaning for a word is most politically advantageous and run with it, but this one is pretty weak, especially since Kling very obviously is referring to the Treaty of Versailles, and the ruinous reparations Germany had to make to the Allies after WW1.

Good to see that Oliver is still a race baiter though, if it’s “how the liberal mind works” when Obama is criticized, this should be a fun 4 years. (Or 8, to anticipate the inevitable rejoinder.) The lame thing is you didn’t even need to play the race card – Kling’s premise isn’t very convincing. Here let me help you:

“People who pay income taxes tend to vote Republican. People who live off taxes tend to vote Democratic.”

This seems dubious, or at least would require a tortured definition to work. Needs some sort of backing statistic.

“To the Democrats, the Bush tax cuts were a heinous evil, comparable to Germany’s violation of Belgian neutrality in World War I. Now, they are demanding reparations, with hundreds of billions of dollars to be paid into teachers unions and other members of the coalition that won the election.”

So the Democrats hated the Bush tax cuts so much that they are trying to payback various Democratic constituencies to make them feel better about the horrible injustice of said tax cuts. Democrats disliked the tax cuts, sure, but theres a lot more work to do to make the case that there is a meaningful line between hatred of the tax cuts and the contents of the stimulus bill. Kling doesn’t bother to try to back up that argument.

See? Kling’s claim is unconvincing, and I didn’t need ignore historical references and be intellectually lazy by saying, “OMG he said ‘reparations’! Booga booga!” to make that case. Amazing!

  11. Duros62 says:

People who pay income taxes tend to vote Republican. People who live off taxes tend to vote Democratic.

I did not know that. WTF have I been doing all this time?
It’s pretty clear to me that whatever follows after that sentence is utter bullshit.

But, no, we all should concede that he isn’t talking about racial reparations. He isn’t really talking about anything sensable.

  12. ed says:

Haplo9 and her ilk are proof that This World is not yet done with the Lee Atwater edition of the Republican Party. How unfortunate.

  13. Haplo9 says:

So ed, you have a convincing explanation for why Kling’s very specific historical reference to a very specific instance of reparations somehow was referring to reparations for slavery? Anything, other than wishful thinking, that is?

  14. ed says:

Haplo9 and her ilk are still proof that This World is not yet done with the Lee Atwater edition of the Republican Party. How deeply unfortunate.

  15. Haplo9 says:

Yeah, I didn’t think you had anything better. Thanks for the confirmation ed. :)

Customer: “You only have two showings of American Carol! That’s just plain un-American! You’re all d**ned communists.”

Me: “I’m sorry sir, but it wasn’t selling well so we had to split it with another movie.”

    Customer: “No – it’s because you’re g**d**n commies.”

Me: “No, sir, that’s actually capitalism. We move the movies that don’t sell well to less show times so as to maximize profits.

Customer: “No, capitalism is American and no real American would move a movie down just because it wasn’t making money!”

  17. A Mendoza says:

Haplo9? You can shove that explantion straight back down your piehole.

The “reparations” debate was a nice, wedge non-issue that the GOP got the yokels all whipped up into a froth about – I still, to this day, see bumper stickers that decry the phantom “reparations” issue here in Texas. If your argument is that we should give the GOP the benefit of the doubt and that the mention of “reparations” was an innocent nod to some other arcane historical reference of “reparations” then I say F*** You and have a nice day. The word “reparations” is a racist dogwhistle.

  18. C.S.Strowbridge says:

“If your argument is that we should give the GOP the benefit of the doubt and that the mention of ‘reparations’ was an innocent nod to some other arcane historical reference of ‘reparations’ then I say F*** You and have a nice day. The word ‘reparations’ is a racist dogwhistle.”

Exactly. The party of the Southern Strategy does not get the benefit of the doubt.

  19. ed says:

    How the Conservative mind works:

You start out in 1954 by saying, “Nigger, nigger, nigger.” By 1968 you can’t say “nigger”—that hurts you. Backfires. So you say stuff like forced busing, states’ rights and all that stuff. You’re getting so abstract now [that] you’re talking about cutting taxes, and all these things you’re talking about are totally economic things and a byproduct of them is [that] blacks get hurt worse than whites.

Not a whole lot more to it.

  20. Haplo9 says:

This is pretty funny. Kling actually references (yes, he specifically says it) a historical event that involved reparations, and yet you mind readers somehow know that he *really* meant something different. (And really A Mendoza? World War 1 and its aftermath is an “arcane” historical reference? Maybe you think what happened during and after the great depression is arcane history as well. That has no bearing at all as to what is going on these days, right?)

    >then I say F*** You and have a nice day. The word “reparations” is a racist dogwhistle.

And I say that the sooner race baiters like yourself and Oliver are off to a well deserved obscurity, the better. Your attempt to make certain words be racial only in order to make hay out of it is pathetic, though not unexpected. It’s apparently “how the liberal mind works.”

  21. Duros62 says:

There is a big difference between war reparations and reparations for slavery.

Kling makes a distinction. Instafuckwit does not.

  22. ed says:

Love, love how Haplo9 and her ilk keep pretending they’re not the Party of Lee Atwater. Love it. Lurve it.

    Keep on keepin on!

  23. Haplo9 says:

And I just “lurve” the way ed has not addressed one bit of the criticism I made of Oliver and his position – just repeated an ad hominem, which, incidentally, rather misses the target with me since I’m not now and never have been a member of the Republican party.

(Though I wouldn’t be surprised if you say that since I’m more ideologically aligned with Republicans, Lee Atwater is thus my ideological father. Or something.)

  24. ed says:

Though I wouldn’t be surprised if you say that since I’m more ideologically aligned with Republicans, Lee Atwater is thus my ideological father.

I’m pretty sure it has a lot to do you your adopting Mr. Atwater’s Southern Strategy chapter and verse. Or didn’t you read the quote above? It’s the same quote that’s tattooed on the back of your hand.

  25. Haplo9 says:

As that is something like 4 responses with nothing substantive, I’ll take it that you conceed the point ed – that Kling was very specifically not talking about reparations for slavery, and you have nothing but hand waving in response. Maybe one day you’ll learn the difference between argument and name calling, but I’m not betting on it..
