Fair point. Still, I give “too little, too late” a slightly higher place on the moral pecking order than “didn’t regret a thing,” which is where Falwell was and I’m sure Cheney will end up.
Um, not that you guys are likely to listen, but the word “reparation” has a rather long history, much of which has nothing to do with the concept of racial reparations. I know that its enjoyable to decide on what meaning for a word is most politically advantageous and run with it, but this one is pretty weak, especially since Kling very obviously is referring to the Treaty of Versailles, and the ruinous reparations Germany had to make to the Allies after WW1.
Good to see that Oliver is still a race baiter though, if it’s “how the liberal mind works” when Obama is criticized, this should be a fun 4 years. (Or 8, to anticipate the inevitable rejoinder.) The lame thing is you didn’t even need to play the race card – Kling’s premise isn’t very convincing. Here let me help you:

This seems dubious, or at least would require a tortured definition to work. Needs some sort of backing statistic.

So the Democrats hated the Bush tax cuts so much that they are trying to payback various Democratic constituencies to make them feel better about the horrible injustice of said tax cuts. Democrats disliked the tax cuts, sure, but theres a lot more work to do to make the case that there is a meaningful line between hatred of the tax cuts and the contents of the stimulus bill. Kling doesn’t bother to try to back up that argument.
See? Kling’s claim is unconvincing, and I didn’t need ignore historical references and be intellectually lazy by saying, “OMG he said ‘reparations’! Booga booga!” to make that case. Amazing!

The “reparations” debate was a nice, wedge non-issue that the GOP got the yokels all whipped up into a froth about – I still, to this day, see bumper stickers that decry the phantom “reparations” issue here in Texas. If your argument is that we should give the GOP the benefit of the doubt and that the mention of “reparations” was an innocent nod to some other arcane historical reference of “reparations” then I say F*** You and have a nice day. Kling actually references (yes, he specifically says it) a historical event that involved reparations, and yet you mind readers somehow know that he *really* meant something different. (And really A Mendoza? World War 1 and its aftermath is an “arcane” historical reference? Maybe you think what happened during and after the great depression is arcane history as well. That has no bearing at all as to what is going on these days, right?)

As that is something like 4 responses with nothing substantive, I’ll take it that you conceed the point ed – that Kling was very specifically not talking about reparations for slavery, and you have nothing but hand waving in response.
