I’m not a big Star Trek fan one way or the other. I enjoyed The Next Gen, and that’s about it. That said, I’ll totally see this, just because I think it looks entertaining.
Me to J. J. Abrams: Thanks, no.
Trailer is already down (Viacom is run by idiots) but I’m purely wait and see on this one.
I’ll mainly see it because a friend of mine is a klingon extra.
Meh. Fast and Furious meets Trek. Color me unimpressed.
I’ve been introducing my ten-year-old to classic Trek, which above all else was a show about ideas. Abrams doesn’t have the imagination to pull that off, so he’s aiming for the lowest common denomiantor: the 18-35 year old male. (no offense, OW)
the 18-35 year old male. (no offense, OW)
As a fellow 18-35 male, I feel I ought to point out that overwhelmingly this is the demographic that goes to the movies, so that’s who they make ‘em for. That ‘Fast and Furious’ analogy’s a good one, though.
Is there a chicken and egg thing here, though Parthenon? If you make films for the 18-35 year old crowd, that’s who will show up. And why do filmmakers assume that young men will only go to movies with lots of explosions and hot chicks? Seems to me that hasn’t always been the case. But the lowest common denominator is easier than coming up with original, thoughtful ideas, I guess.
Admittedly, with the cost of tickets + babysitter we see most of our movies via Netflix. I’m trying to convince Mr.Quaker to splurge on a night out to see Slumdog Millionaire, but it’s an uphill battle. We took the family to see Hotel for Dogs this weekend and dropped $50 on tickets and popcorn for the freakin’ matinee!

I was just wondering the same thing, oddly enough. Did they start making blockbusters a little dumber when the demographic shifted, or did the demographics shift when they started making dumber blockbusters? It’s an interesting question. Where’s that Canadian film critic when you need him?
Then again, maybe we’re just remembering the Laurence of Arabias and the Ben Hurs, and forgetting Santa Claus Conquers the Martians and Tarzan of the Ape People. Big, dumb and fun always has its hallowed place, of course.
Slumdog is WELL worth it, FWIW. 50 bones for Hotel for Dogs? Greatest sympathies…
That nauseatingly bad pun was unintentional, btw.

The key demographic is actually a little younger than 18 – 35. Its 15 to 25, and it’s male. This is the group that combines the highest disposable incomes and the least likely to pay attention to reviews. (Younger kids care about reviews even less, but generally have no money of their own, while older people tend to have more money, but read and trust reviews more.) Therefore, they go to the movies the most, and they are the easiest to impress.
As much as I don’t like it, it makes business sense to cater to the easily impressed, because there’s more money in it.
this trailer reminds me of when the new Superman came out. All hype and dead movie. I think this will be the same.
