Pajamas Media Fail

Time to point and laugh at the right again. You know how they always point to problems at the NY Times as somehow symptomatic of the success of liberal based media even though liberal media is thriving on the web (in many cases without big conservative moneybags behind it)? Do that.

From the first link: “No one is rolling in big bucks these days.”

Maybe not “big bucks,” but DailyKos and TalkingPointsMemo are making enough money off of ad revenue to hire full time staffers.

The invisible hand of the free market has decided that Republican blogs just kind of suck, in terms of ad revenue. Can anyone name one that actually makes a profit? (Being propped up by wingnut welfare doesn’t count, Jay.)

  2. Jaim says:

In addition, as I’ve commented elsewhere, why is it that prominent Dem bloggers tend to have actual full-time jobs (Greenwald, Atrios, Firedoglake, Willis, etc.) while con bloggers live in their parents’ basements?

Just curious. You cons should get out there and try having a real job for once. It’s refreshing and adult at the same time! You can actually buy as many bags of Cheetohs as you want!

  3. The line about PJM needing to be self-sufficient and being a “independent media source” outside of “well-funded MSM” or whatever is hilarious in its utter bullshit. The damn enterprise was founded with over 7 million in private equity, as opposed to sites like DailyKos, TPM, Christ, even HotAir, who worked their way from the ground up.

If they really think they’ll now turn a profit making people pay for right-wing video (again, considering Malkin already satiates the frothing masses for free with this, I highly doubt it) more power to ‘em. As for me, I’m gonna enjoy the rest of the weekend reminiscing about all the PJM-run posts snarking about the demise of Keith Olbermann, Air America, and Salon.

  4. Jay Tea says:

    …hm? Someone say my name?

DANG it. I was just counting how many Obama nominees and appointees have had to seek waivers from Obama’s new ethics standards (mainly tax cheats and lobbyists), and now I’ve lost count.

I’ll start again. Geithner, Daschle, Lynn, Patterson…

    J.

  5. …So, four. Which is great because if it was over ten you’d have had to take your shoes off.

Also, what does any of that have to do with Oliver’s topic? You know, going back to the actual subject of utterly failed bloggers, anyone else find it sad that Jay’s given up on his own blogging so badly that he’s just decided to create new posts inside the comments section of Oliver’s site?

    –Jay Tea

Joe Biden tolds us how patriotic paying more taxes is. He must be steaming mad at some of these characters. Love the picture of Geithner sitting next to Obama when he’s scolding Wall Street executives for their bonuses paid out.

Speaking of which, let’s play Name That Party:

  7. Jay Tea:
Patterson isn’t a nominee, you idiot. He’s the Governor of NY. Trying to fluff up numbers are you?

  8. Jay Tea says:

    Oh, Calvin. You caught me.

Whoops, my bad. You are referring to David Paterson, with one “T.” I was referring to Mark Patterson, with 2 “T’s.” He’s the former Goldman Sachs lobbyist nominated to be Geithner’s chief of staff.

A banking lobbyist as the right-hand man of the Secretary of the Treasury? Well, considering Geithner’s record (overseeing the Wall Street meltdown, unable to understand his own taxes), it’s probably good that he has someone on hand who can explain the complicated stuff to him.

Ha! Everybody knows all these sites are really only functional because of the massive influx of Soros $$$! (er, well, except for HotAir, of course…)

  10. Tyro says:

Dennis the Peasant’s commentary on this fiasco has been priceless.

PJM was always the overwrought bling of the blogosphere. They raised millions of dollars in venture capital, rented one of those “virtual office” addresses in Rockefeller Center, and talked up how they were going to replace the eeevul Emmm-Ess-Emmm! What they didn’t want to do was actually do the work to create a profitable business, which is what Kos and Josh Marshall were always doing. Watching this train wreck has been hilarious. I blame the wingnut welfare mentality for not teaching the right-wingers the value of hard work.

The late, great Steve Gilliard summed up some of the commentary on what a clusterfuck PJM was from the beginning.

  11. Jay Tea says:

I remember Dennis’ initial reporting at the time, and thinking “thank heavens I’m not part of this mess.”

    And I’m still grateful.

    J.

  12. Jaim says:

Jay: How many hits you averaging on your site these days? Serious question.

  13. Jay Tea says:

Jaim, I dunno. The magazine doesn’t tell me, and I haven’t bothered to ask.

    Thanks for the concern, though.

  14. Zython says:

Sources: Portland Mayor ’s Gay Lover Was 17 When Sex Began

Democrat. If it was a Republican, the lover would’ve been 12.

  15. Jay Tea says:

Funny, Zython, I thought Gerry Studds was a Democrat.

By the way, apparently you don’t know about the game “Name That Party.” Whenever you read a story about a disgraced politician, look for a mention of their party affiliation. When it’s a Republican, that gets mentioned fairly quickly. If the mention is later in the piece or missing entirely, the odds are extremely high that it’s a Democrat.

It’s not a habitual thing, but it’s statistically improbable to pass it off as a coincidence.

Try a Google search of “name that party” and see countless examples — I just came up with over 57,000 hits.

How many were on soon-to-be-defunct Pajamas Media sites?

Oh!…Did we move on to a different subject? Forgive me.

  17. C.S.Strowbridge says:

J.G.Thayer: “…hm? Someone say my name?”

    Your name is hypocrite.

Now stick to the topic or write your own Blog.

Oh, I’m sorry. You wanted people to actually read what you wrote.

    Please continue.

  18. Jay Tea says:

My apologies, Strowbridge. You’re quite right. I should stick to the topic.

Obviously, PJM should have found a way to sustain themselves. Perhaps by ripping off a Boys and Girls Club, or finding a Soros-type sugar daddy…

    J.

  19. Repack Rider says:

Obviously, PJM should have found a way to sustain themselves.

They are using the Washington Times business model. Lose millions a year but spout lots of conservative lies and a right wing wacko will finance you.

If it works for a “major” newspaper, what could go wrong?

Okay, their wacko financier might not have as much money as Reverend Moon, who after all has been crowned as the Second Coming of Jesus by Republican leaders.

  20. Dennis says:

DC liberal radio OBAMA 1260 FAIL

“The move by Redskins owner Dan Snyder, who purchased the station, WWRC, and others in Washington last summer, leaves the city without a liberal radio outlet. Program Director Greg Tantum says he thought the station could work because of enthusiasm over Obama, but that ratings collapsed to a level that could not be measured after the election.

But ratings nearly doubled, he says, at Snyder’s conservative station, WTNT, which features Laura Ingraham and Bill Bennett.”

  21. Jaim says:

Shorter Jay: Con blogs are so incredibly shitty that they’re all going dead, even mine which I don’t even bother to link to any longer.

    ZOMG GAY PEOPLE! LOOK!

And Pajama Media _had_ a sugar daddy. Two of them, actually — what’s-his-name-in-the-hat and Charles from LGF.

It’s truly a good time to be an American these days.

  22. fafaroo says:

Dude! Totally! That’s what I’m saying! But dig this!

If you google “the earth is flat” you get 186,000 hits!!!1!!!

So, you know, that’s true too!

  23. Enlightened Liberal says:

I just googled “Dennis is an asshole” and got, get this, 1.8 million hits. Must be over 30 times more true than “name that party”.

  24. Jay Tea says:

Jaim, get a clue. You won’t see my name on Wizbang any more. I resigned to join the staff of a magazine’s blog last November. I’m proud of what I did in almost five years of blogging at Wizbang, but I’ve moved on. I don’t link to it any more because I’m no longer editor.

    J.

  25. Repack Rider says:

    I’ve moved on.

Apparently his parents are remodeling the old rec room where he’s been staying, and encouraging him, at 27, to find meaning in his life, but even more important, an apartment. And then, perhaps a job if he can figure out something that he is at least average at.

  26. Jay Tea says:

Thoughtful of you to worry about me, Repack, but off in a few details:

My parents have been deceased for well over a decade, I’m considerably older than 41, and just passed my 11th anniversary at the day job. (Today I got calls of appreciation from my boss’s boss, and his boss, for what I’ve done over the last month.) I am looking for an apartment, however — you got that right. A sprinkler blew two floors above my old apartment, and I got flooded out.

But back to the story at hand… I was waiting for Oliver to correct himself, but he hasn’t. PJM isn’t shutting down, it’s just ending its blog advertising arm. PJM itself will soldier on. Their model just wasn’t sustainable — as a lot of people pointed out at the outset. My old blog boss, Kevin Aylward, owner of Wizbang, passed at the beginning because he thought it would flop.

They should have followed the Air America model and found some charities to rip off for money, or found some conservative George Soros with more money than brains and scruples who didn’t mind throwing millions of dollars around to sponsor his or her political goals.

    Oh, well…

    J.

  27. Jaim says:

What bullshit. PJM isn’t just stopping blog advertising, it’s _dropping it’s roster of bloggers_ you disingenuous twit. Why else would the dude from Proten Wisdom be throwing a hissy-fit like he is?

PJM is going to a pay-for-play web-TV model. Please be honest for once in your life and admit that it is therefore doomed.

Anyways, glad to hear you’ve been made employee of the month at Taco Bell again. Congrats!

And again, PJM bloggers were getting paid through a sugar daddy who has recently admitted that advertising on their blogs _never made any money_. He bilked investors out of over seven million in start-up cash.

Again, most succesful lib blogs are written by succesful professionals who decide they want to start blogging. Most con blogs are written by whiney little man-boys who expect a sugar-daddy to pay for them to blog out of their parents’ basement.

  28. C.S.Strowbridge says:

J.G.Thayer: “Obviously, PJM should have found a way to sustain themselves. Perhaps by ripping off a Boys and Girls Club, or finding a Soros-type sugar daddy…”

What blogs are Soros giving money to? And how do I get some?

  29. C.S.Strowbridge says:

J.G.Thayer: “I don’t link to it any more because I’m no longer editor.”

You were editor of WizBang? How much did that pay?

  30. Repack Rider says:

    JT,

Thanks for the unimpressive resume, which included a single datum. Eleven years at the same job! Must either be a world record or an easy job.

I have a link here, and I have actually accomplished a few things of lasting significance. One of my several passions in life is bicycling, and every book written after about 1980 about the history of that subject has to include me.

Is there anything YOU are good at?

  31. Jay Tea says:

Repack, “same employer” is NOT the same as “same job.” Three locations, numerous promotions, same employer.

Strowbridge, that’s none of your business, but I probably could have claimed Wizbang on my taxes.

    As “hobby deductions.”

    J.

  32. C.S.Strowbridge says:

J.G.Thayer: “Strowbridge, that’s none of your business, but I probably could have claimed Wizbang on my taxes.”

Getting paid to write on the internet is not a easy thing to do. It took me two years before I saw a dime.

Sad thing is, during the peak of the Dot Com boom, the site would have been worth millions.

  33. Jay Tea says:

Strowbridge, you cut off my punchline when you quoted me. The point of claiming Wizbang on my taxes would have been not as income, but as a deduction — sometimes it cost me money.

I put in almost five years there before someone offered me actual money to write, and I jumped with both feet.

And today one of my articles got linked on Real Clear Politics’ “Best Of The Blogs.”

To be blunt, I don’t bring my “A” game here. It’s usually just warming up for the good stuff. Plus, it keeps me in touch with certain elements and lines of thought.

I guess, in a way, I owe a little debt of gratitude to you and your ilk.
