The best solution for the Big 3 is to reinstate the cafe standards or something similar, requiring them to produce fuel efficient cars. Seriously, there is a lot of fleet business out there for fuel efficient vehicle. The Parks Department in NYC bought a large fleet of Prius’. NYC taxicabs are becoming hybrid and Japanese (lots of Camry Hybrids).

The flip side is instead of giving them money, take over their retirement healthcare costs. The lack of a universal medical care system is strangling the Big 3, who have lots of workers who haven’t built a car since the Carter administration still getting benefits. Why do you think auto plants have been moving into Ontario? Because Canada has an excellent public health care system.

You realize that the fuel standards California wants is inline with China, right? Japan has better standards, and so does Europe.

They can make cars that are that fuel efficient, they just don’t want to.

If they did, it would be able to ship cars to more nations, which would increase their potential market, which would be good for business.

I just think this is pretty poor timing on the Obama administration’s part. Two of the Big 3 car companies are teetering on the brink of bankruptcy (and the third isn’t all that stable either) and instead of a life preserver, Obama just threw them an anchor.

Yes, the right is all for states rights. Except when they aren’t.

And I doubt that laid-off workers from GM or Chrysler would appreciate your “F*** the company, oh but I cry for you” sentiments.
