We Checked! #2: Bernard Goldberg Hacks Up An Interview

10:38 pm EST January 25th, 2009 | News | 9 Comments

Too good to check, my friends.

In another house-of-cards example of purported media infatuation with President Obama offered by Bernard Goldberg in his new book, Goldberg echoes Rush Limbaugh by printing badly doctored “snippets” of an interview between Charlie Rose and Tom Brokaw. Goldberg’s doctored transcript of the interview falsely suggests, among other things, that Brokaw expressed the view that “there’s a lot about [Obama] we don’t know,” when, in fact, Brokaw attributed that assertion to “conservative commentators” and that comments Brokaw and Rose made about their lack of familiarity with the candidates applied only to Obama when, in fact, they were referring to Sen. John McCain as well.

You gotta think Goldberg snipped up the interview, slapped it in his book and had a moment to himself where he was damn sure nobody was going to check. He’d just jump on Fox News, flog his book, and count the royalties. Unfortunately… We Checked!

You know, if you keep this up Oliver, Goldberg will start whining about you to Bill O’Reilly, who will slam you for being part of the eeeeevil Soros-funded Media Matters…

I can hear the dialogue now…

“Hey, nobody’s paying attention to our exposes of Bernard Goldberg. We gotta do something to take this guy down.”

“I can plug it on my blog over the weekend!”

“We don’t want you to do work-stuff on your own time, Oliver.”

“It’s OK, I don’t mind. In fact, I think of my blog as an extension of my work anyway.”

    “You sure you don’t mind?”

“Not at all! In fact, I’ll take the whole Goldberg file home and post the best stuff! I’ll even make a whole new category!”

Nah, never happen like that. Too candid.

  4. I think anyone would love their job as much as Oliver does if it pissed you off just as much, Jay.

  5. Jay Tea says:

Thanks, August. I’m just waiting for the pro forma Oliver declaration of independence…

  6. Parthenon says:

FWIW, I read the Goldberg exposes on MM before seeing them here.

JT, does it bother you more that the guy blows it so much in a book – in a book, with lots of time and resources to edit and stuff – that one could run an entire feature about his screw-ups and probably not want for material?

  7. Quaker in a Basement says:

Mr. Tea is making stuff up?

    Another day.

  8. Don’t worry, Jay Tea will come stalk me at work again to see the secret messages George Soros leaves on our desks each morning.

J.G.Thayer: “Nah, never happen like that. Too candid.”

I remember a time when you claimed you didn’t care about what Oliver did as part of his job and what he does on this site, even when he works on this site during his job hours.

But you do seem to bring it up a lot.
