My Mom On The Obama Inauguration

momAs I noted on Twitter, the whole AT&T cell network on the Capitol lawn bit the big one during the Inauguration, and my mom was trying to call me to share the moment. But she did leave a voicemail from Jamaica. I know I’m prejudiced – it’s my mom, after all – but the emotion of the moment is pretty clear here. Take a listen:

My mom turns 58 this March, and while she lived in Jamaica for a decent sized part of that time (she lived in America from about ’73-84 then from ’86-’95), think of how the country has changed in her lifetime.

Oh, and beware: my mom is going to be blogging in a month or so, and she thinks I’m basically a right-wing conservative (at least on fiscal issues).

Oliver, I also think you are a Right Wing Conservative.

I’ll leave it to your imagination as to what I think about Jay Tea and Frank.

    Whatever happened to Frank?

I just listened to the audio. Your mom pretty much sums up how I feel as well!

    Thanks for sharing.

I hope you are serious about your mom guest blogging. I think it will be great!

Thank you indeed for sharing that. I too look forward to seeing your mom’s guest blogging. I expect she’ll be Kicking Somethingorother.

And there’s one other thing that needs to be said now that the Inauguration is done, and by a White Guy, because nobody seems to have talked about it. This year, among all the nasty things, there have been great joys, as we’ve seen a righteous man arrive and send the demons packing. Everyone has talked of the thing that no one thought could happen in his lifetime, and Justice triumphant at last. That is all important. But the fun, the big deal, has been watching Black America realize that this could happen and it was happening; and just seeing people exult in it!

I don’t think I’ve ever seen anything so satisfying, and surely not in politics. And thanks, everyone, for carrying it off with so much class.

I forgot that a Jamaican accent is one of the most beautiful variations in spoken English. The other being Irish.

Maybe your mom can do some live discussions.

    Cool!

And hey Oliver, since you’re a right-wing conservative, could you please take over and reform the Republican party? They could really benefit from it. Hell, we all could.

Thanks for sharing that. It was lovely hearing the emotion in her voice.

I was at home in NYC watching the inauguration with my own Jamaican mother and she had the same sweet, tear-filled reaction.
