Cons: Agree or disagree? Is this mainstream conservatism, and if not, why is this guy not laughed out of the room?

Love the headline! Sez it all.

  3. The Reality-Based Dave says:

Jon Stewart to Mike Huckaby: “When did you decide to be heterosexual?”

I notice that Kenny also didn’t provide a coherent answer.

  4. ed says:

Your modern Republican party. Thanks Nixon! Thanks Jay Tea! Thanks Amused Observer!

  5. Rheinhard says:

Well, I’m sure as a last line of argumentation in the narrow Jonah Goldbergian sense the wingnut on the losing side of this argument would argue that in the final analysis, sure, Homosexuality can be “cured”…

… in much the same way that breathing can be “cured”.

  6. slag says:

Kenny sounds like he speaks from experience.

  7. Southern Quaker says:

Does that mean that heterosexuality can be cured as well?

  8. anotherbozo says:

Lorena Bobbitt made an attempt, at least in one case.

  9. mambochicken23 says:

Social conservatives are a pathetic bunch of fucking idiots. It never ceases to amaze me that in the 21st century that there’s this semi-accepted notion that homosexuality is akin to a disease. And that because of this “disease”, homosexuals can be discriminated against. A hundred years from now, people are going to look back on this era and be amazed at this kind of inhumanity on the part of social conservatives, much like most of us are horrified at the notions of slavery, women being denied the vote, etc.

  10. C.S.Strowbridge says:

Screw a cure for Homosexuality. We need a cure for Christian bigotry.

  11. somejackass says:

    Stop being a sore winner, O-Dub :-)

  12. Jay Tea says:

In some cass, yes, homosexuality can be “cured.” There are plenty of examples, and as the saying goes, one concrete examples trumps a thousand theories.

On the other hand, I don’t think the vast majority of gays need, want, or can be “cured,” and I could care less either way.

I have a very self-centered opinion on homosexuality. I have no problems with heterosexual women, as they are the object of my orientation. I have no problems with gay women, because I agree with them on their orientation. I have no problems with gay men, because every gay man is one less man I have to compete with for the attention of women. It’s other straight men that I have troubles with.

I’m probably not an ideal person to speak for the “social conservative” viewpoint, though. I’m a libertarian/libertine. I support gay marriage, I’m squishily pro-choice, and I cconsider myself a “born-again agnostic.”

And those cases would be what, exactly? Some cultures tried burning at the stake. Did that work. George Bush, Juniors pals like to behead gay people in the town square. That do the trick? How about the Trough of Justice?

  14. Jay Tea says:

What the FUCK are you talking about, ed? It’s the Islamists who publicly execute gays for the “sin” of being gay — folks like the Taliban and the government of Iran, neither of which I’d call “Bush’s pals.”

As far as “cured” gays, there are plenty of them around — usually giving credit to God for their “cure.” I don’t particularly feel like arguing with them about whether or not they were truly gay, or if they are truly cured, so I’ll take them at their word.

And so, the Republican party continues its decline to the public statur/popularity of the KKK.

    Keep it up, guys!

    Mm-hm

Prince Bandar has formed close relationships with several American presidents, notably George H.W. Bush and George W. Bush, the latter giving him the affectionate and controversial nickname “Bandar Bush”.

    You were saying?

That’s twice you’ve mentioned this without a single reference. Ted Haggard? Does that Right Wing lunatic count. Nice company you keep there, J. Awesome direction your club’s headed.

And since you don’t have concrete examples…

You even admit that you don’t have examples, just an unwillingness to argue with people who make the claims that they have been cured.

So perhaps you should shut the fuck up and stick to topics you have some actual evidence for.

  20. Why should a political party be worried about curing homosexuality when there are so many other issues facing America that are more pressing?

Sure one could pretend to cure it to please the likes of Ken Blackwell and Jay Tea but does that provide a better education system? Or health care for Americans who need it? Or provide people a livable wage so they can feed, clothe and house their families? Or protect Americans from getting ripped off by the Bernie Madoffs of the world?

This GOP’s obsession with homosexuality is lame.

In the same way I wouldn’t want anyone to cure me of my heterosexuality, I think it’s pathetic to talk about curing homosexuality.

  21. ed says:

Why should a political party be worried about curing homosexuality when there are so many other issues facing America that are more pressing?

Because Republicans need an Other to function. It’s the natural evolution of the Southern Strategy. They need to create a diversion so they can lavish regressive tax cuts on the obscenely rich, deregulate banking and industry, invade oil lands, and beat down unions so GOP donors can get a decent return on their investment.

It’s not a new strategy, really. Other countries and cultures have used The Other to advance their ideals.

    Republicans: so awesome.

    Protip: They’re still gay.

  23. Luke the Intrepid says:

At this point it seems to be a deliberate attempt on the part of some Republicans to sabotage their own party. Probably they think this will allow republican leaning democrats to better manage in the next election cycle. It’s an interesting strategy but not a very good one.

Rekha: “Even animals wont do that, its absolutely against to natural life style. This should not be encouraged”

What are you talking about? Homosexuality or voting Republican. If you mean homosexuality, you are wrong.

  26. Sean D. Martin says:

Jay Tea: I don’t particularly feel like arguing with them about whether or not they were truly gay, or if they are truly cured, so I’ll take them at their word.

And the word of the many who clearly state that their sexual orientation isn’t a disease or something they can be “cured” of? How much do you count their word?

  27. Sean D. Martin says:

Rekha: Even animals wont do that, its absolutely against to natural life style. This should not be encouraged

Assuming “that” is homosexuality/lesbianism, you’re just plain wrong.

    http://news.nationalgeographic.com/news/2004/07/0722_040722_gayanimal.html:

But, actually, some same-sex birds do do it. So do beetles, sheep, fruit bats, dolphins, and orangutans. Zoologists are discovering that homosexual and bisexual activity is not unknown within the animal kingdom.

Roy and Silo, two male chinstrap penguins at New York’s Central Park Zoo have been inseparable for six years now. They display classic pair-bonding behavior—entwining of necks, mutual preening, flipper flapping, and the rest. They also have sex, while ignoring potential female mates.

    http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/List_of_animals_displaying_homosexual_behavior:

No species has been found in which homosexual behaviour has not been shown to exist, with the exception of species that never have sex at all, such as sea urchins and aphids.

Tell you what, if my dog votes republican, he is OUT.

  29. Sean D. Martin says:

Duros62: Tell you what, if my dog votes republican, he is OUT.

(channeling Jay Tea): If your dog votes at all, it’s clearly part of ACORN’s careful plan.

  30. The Reality-Based Dave says:

Blackwell is just separating himself from the racist wing of the rethuglican party. Y’know, the other guy running for the RNC chair that gave copies of Limbaugh’s tune “Barack the Magick Negro” to all his friends.
Blackwell has to show he is a good hater, & the color thing for some strange reason, is off limits on the list of things he hates. (oficially. ANY black republican is a self-hater, just like all the log cabin republicans)
