It’s entirely possible that fewer people than expected will show up.I was considering going, but then I assumed you wouldn’t be able to get a room, the place would be packed, and security would be so tight it’d be a massive pain in the ass. IOW, no one’s going becuase they assume it’ll be too crowded.

I think the crowd will be humongous. All the big gatherings for the BO have had overflow crowds. So many examples: Portland OR back in May, Denver at the DNC, Manassas right before the election, Philadelphia, Germany. I don’t think people are going to stay away due to the crowds, they’ll flock together to experience the sheer historical significance together. That and the wonderful feeling they’ll get as we have a chance to finally get some government back.

Conservatives won’t deny the place was packed. They’ll say they all came to see Springsteen and T.I.

We’ve already seen phenomenon in the other direction: Fewer and fewer percentages of people admit to having voted for George Bush, Junior. Those numbers should continue to fall.

I guess it’s a variant of the Obama birth certificate thing. I’ve long subscribed to the theory that Obama won’t release it not because it’ll show he wasn’t born in the US, but as long as he keeps it out of sight, it keeps the nuts obsessing over that and not other, more substantive criticisms of Obama. It’s a useful distraction — kind of like this whole “how many will show up for the inauguration?” game.

It’s a frickin’ weekday in frickin’ January in frickin’ DC. It generally isn’t as nasty as it is here in New England, but it seems DC is simply not capable of dealing with that kind of weather. A lot of people got all caught up and captivated with the notion of attending, and now reality’s setting in. It’s gonna be cold, it’s gonna be crowded, and — let’s be honest — much of DC is a pit. On the other hand, it’s gonna be on every frickin’ TV channel (rumor has it the Food Network, HBO, and at least one of the pay-per-view porn channels will be airing it).

And in the long term, it all means nothing.

Yeah, he’ll get inaugurated a week from Tuesday. But (I hope) the symbolism of that event will soon be overshadowed by his actual accomplishments, and we can get past this silly “first” crap. (First black man nominated, first black man to win, first black man to be officially chosen by the Electoral College, first black man to be inaugurated, etc., etc.)

And last summer I walked much of DC. In the 500 block of K Street NW, I spotted a sign on a telephone pole that looked like a “lost pet” flyer. On closer examination, it turned out to be a “Joe was murdered on this spot last week” notice.

I’ll stand by my stating that much of DC is a pit. Hell, you work there, but do you live in DC? Would you live in DC?

Like I said, there are bad parts of DC like anywhere else, but it’s got world class arts, culture, shopping, and history. I would live in some parts of DC – like millions of others do (I live in Maryland partially because I love MD and also because I couldn’t afford to live in DC and I’m most comfortable in suburbia, which is what MD largely is). You’re expressing the common outside view that DC is a bunch of federal buildings surrounded by gangsters. That just isn’t so. You’ve got the historical part, the suburban part, the hood, the business area, etc.

Even though I’m a homer for Maryland, I’ll defend D.C. especially compared to some cities right here in Maryland.

DC is a very tolerant place. A little bit of a drug problem, but very tolerant. The citizens have high standards for elected officials. A Top notch public school system, leading the nation in literacy. Low levels of crime and violence, fiscally responsible, a shining example of how to run a city.

Several weeks ago, Senator Obama (that would be Michelle’s husband and the father of those kids in question) announced that, after a special report on some entertainment TV show, his kids would’t be the subject of any more press coverage. And more recently, he challenged people who were “attacking” his wife, daring them to focus on him instead.

Well, that seems a reasonable request. He’s the candidate, not them. We should leave them alone.

It’s not easy, though. I was at the supermarket recently, and the cover story on People was “At Home With The Obamas.” Featured were all four of them — Barack, Michelle, and both girls.

Senator Obama has declared that we can not criticize his wife, and that seems fair enough. He also doesn’t want people talking about his kids. Again, a fair request.

But he’s gotta meet us halfway. If he doesn’t want them discussed, then they need to not seek out (or be thrust into) the limelight. He needs to stop sitting down and posing with them for People magazine …

I can understand the Obamas wanting to keep their kids out of the amazingly successful DC school system. But now Jaim has given us all good reason to worry about what kind of education those poor kids are going to burdened with now.

Michelle ought to just stay home, bake cookies and give those kids a chance by home schooling them. Their old mentor Rev. Wright can help with classes on tolerance, racial inclusiveness and science. Bill Ayers ought to be able to help with any litle areas that Michelle has trouble with like civics and American History.

The poor kid’s parents and the Democrats in Congress chose to make the family’s financial status the number one argument for increasing the scope of SCHIP. God forbid anyone should actually “vet” the argument and fact-check the claims being made on a multi-billion dollar increase in funding.

No, I think you meant to refer to Chief Justice Roberts’ son — when Roberts was nominated, there was speculation that he might be gay (it turned out that he was about five years old at the time) and the New York Times petitioned to get the adoption records unsealed on the theory that “there might be something irregular in there that we really, really wanna know about.”

I have a couple of comments up thread in moderation but can we please just stop giving Jay Tea the benefit of the doubt about anything? The only consistency the guy has ever shown is his ability to get basic facts completely wrong.

He has not been consistent with regard to using children to attack their politician parents. He has been anything but.

In one of George Carlin’s routines (I think it was “Feminist Blowjob”), he declared that you can make jokes about anything — it’s all a matter of where the exaggeration is. He then demonstrated by making two fairly funny jokes about rape. They weren’t hysterically funny, but they were worth a chuckle or two. That lesson stuck with me.

The lowest point of Bill Clinton’s administration was the revelation of his affair with Monica Lewinsky. For years the most vocal of feminists had been hammering on the issue of sexual harassment, even going so far as to say that when there was too much disparity between the power of the man and the woman, “consent” wasn’t even possible — that it was sexual harassment at best, and rape at worst, if the man held too much power over the woman within the work environment.

Then came along Clinton/Lewinsky — the ultimate embodiment of that principle. Here was the most powerful man on earth, having an affair with a woman with literally no power — an unpaid intern. And even more disgusting to some people, she was young enough to be his daughter — in fact, only seven years older than his actual daughter.

There was the genesis of my idea. When Bill Clinton’s library was dedicated, Chelsea Clinton was actually a few years older than Monica Lewinsky was at the time of her affair with Bill Clinton. Why not remind folks of what he had done, with a bit of exaggeration and emphasis that would remind people viscerally of just what an appalling thing he had done? In a way that was admittedly tasteless, but considerably less tasteless than the deeds that inspired it?

In retrospect, perhaps I shouldn’t have committed my thoughts to the screen. But I did. I won’t go back and delete it, or edit it. I don’t bury or hide anything I said or did.

And in this case, I wouldn’t. Not one of my prouder pieces, but I can live with “TEH HYPOCRISY!!!!!” on this one.

And every single time a discussion veers away from the topic (how significant, really, in the long term, will be the turnout for Obama’s inauguration?) to discussions of me, I get all warm and fuzzy inside from the love. Thanks, folks!

The concern you show for spelling and typos is heartwarming, the idiot part seems a little harsh. Why are liberals so harsh and intolerant? We will have less freedom and liberty, liberals despise freedom and liberty, they despise the country we have built, what has made us different from the rest of the world. Obama will disapoint the left. He will be plenty bad for this country but not as bad as you desire. He is smart enough to move to the center but he will probably be even worse for this country than FDR. Political pull not American ingenuity will dominate our economy. With any luck the inflation will kick in about midway through his first 4 years and he will take the heat.

Ruining our medical system will most likely be his major accomlishment after crippling our economy.-legacy. The government not doctors will decide what treatment is appropriate and on their timeline. Eventually rationing will occur and some overpaid government hack will decide if you live or die.

I was briefly a fan of Limbaugh’s, back in the early 90’s. His schtick was new then, and fairly entertaining. I quickly outgrew that, though. A big push towards that was when on his not-short-enough-lived TV show, he was assailing Bill Clinton’s pandering nature and said “did you know the White House has a dog?” and put up a picture of then-13-year-old Chelsea Clinton. Limbaugh’s defense is that his staff set it up and he didn’t have time to go back and edit it out. I refuse to accept that explanation; it was a completely reprehensible and despicable action, and any person of decency, honor, and character would have MADE the time to prevent it from airing. Regardless of one’s feelings towards the parents, a politician’s children are NOT legitimate targets — especially a 13-year-old girl. Ever since that incident, I have never listened to Limbaugh, never respected him, never liked him.

In retrospect, perhaps I shouldn’t have committed my thoughts to the screen. But I did. I won’t go back and delete it, or edit it. I don’t bury or hide anything I said or did. And in this case, I wouldn’t. Not one of my prouder pieces, but I can live with “TEH HYPOCRISY!!!!!” on this one.

Above you make a huge point of why you made the joke:

Why not remind folks of what he had done, with a bit of exaggeration and emphasis that would remind people viscerally of just what an appalling thing he had done? In a way that was admittedly tasteless, but considerably less tasteless than the deeds that inspired it?

In other words, why not tell a tasteless joke at Chelsea’s expense to attack her father. Just the thing you spent “over a decade” despising Limbaugh for.

I wish you would just go away but I know you won’t. Instead, I would suggest that you pause and think the next time you want to attack anyone here or some other liberal/Dem for hypocrisy. Because not only have offered a rationalization for doing what you claim to despise, you’ve made it perfectly clear that when called on your own hypocrisy, you couldn’t care less.

When insurance companies balk at the bill , the state govt. pays for the indigent,private philanthropy provides a lot of money, there is a lot of negotiation and the hospitals end up eating much of it. One of the biggest consistant deadbeats is medicare and medicaid. The fraction of the cost the Feds pay doesn’t even pay for the cost of the paperwork to process it.

You will be singing a different tune when your personal medical treatment is in the hands of a bureaucracy.
