I will never understand the pathology that goes with conservatism where even a regional talk show host has to make things up.
“Gunny” Bob Newman cited an unidentified article to suggest falsely that Vice President-elect Joe Biden had a run-in with a movie theater manager when he and his wife were unable to buy tickets for a sold-out film. Newman claimed the manager said, ” ‘What part of [sold out] don’t you understand?’ Or words to that effect.” In fact, the article reported that the manager thought it was “a kick” to see the Bidens and that the pair “didn’t ask for special treatment.”
This guy just invented an entire conversation. It’s not that he got the quotes wrong – it never freaking happened!
OW, almost all conservative commentators and journalists have shit for brains. PERIOD. You see that right here with Jay Tea.
BTW, “Andrew” Coulter has a new book and is hawking it all over. More recycled paper wasted on bovine effluvium.
Turnabout is fair play. Biden himself has a long, extensive history of making up stuff himself. The host was wrong, but he picked an appropriate target. Biden has about as much right to complain about people making stuff up about him as he does to complain about someone plagiarizing him.
J.
“Biden himself has a long, extensive history of making up stuff himself.”
I don’t see the “turnabout” here unless Biden’s history of “making up stuff” involves lying about someone to make that person look bad, as Newman did here with the Vice-President Elect. “Making stuff up” doesn’t always involve smearing people.
“Andrew” Coulter
Randy, did Ann Coulter get a sex change?
rotter, Google up Biden’s “I probably have a higher IQ than you” response to a voter back in 1988. A guy challenged him, and Biden immediately blustered and bullshitted and browbeat the guy — and it was almost all made up.
He said he graduated at the top of his class in law school, attended on a full academic scholarship, graduated with three degrees… all complete and utter bullshit, for the sole purpose of putting the guy down and shutting him up.
J.
Gunny Bob is certifiable. He mostly spends his time on the air repeating whatever he read on Drudge and Malkin.
And way to go, Mr. Tea: A conservative makes stuff up? The Democrat deserved it!!
““Andrew” Coulter
Randy, did Ann Coulter get a sex change?”
No, he didn’t.
Have you ever seen “the crying game”?
No, Rotter. Coulter has had the same gender since birth, wardrobe and voice notwithstanding.
Willa Westinghouse rises again!!
Jay, Biden shouldn’t have lied about those things, but I still don’t see the “turnabout” here since Biden’s lies were based on puffing himself up, not on lying ABOUT another person to make them look bad (as is the case with what Newman said about him).
CLAREMONT, N.H.—A New Hampshire man who provoked Sen. Joe Biden’s infamous misstatements about his academic record two decades ago is calling the Delaware senator a “fantastic choice” as Democrat Barack Obama’s running mate.
Frank Fahey, a teacher from Claremont, quizzed Biden about his law school performance at a campaign stop in March 1987. In a widely publicized exchange, Biden snapped that he probably had a higher IQ than Fahey. Among other things, he claimed that he had finished in the top half of his law school class, held three undergraduate degrees and was the outstanding student in the political science department, all of which was false.
Six months later, Biden dropped out of the race after also admitting he had committed plagiarism as a freshman law student and that he occasionally used others’ words in his speeches without giving credit.
Fahey, a lifelong Republican and ardent Obama supporter, said Saturday that Biden is a smart choice for vice president because his foreign affairs expertise will shore up Obama’s relatively thin resume.
“I think Obama will make a fantastic president, but I think Biden will bring the balance to the ticket that’s needed,” Fahey told the Valley News of Lebanon. “His mouth has gotten him into trouble sometimes. It did that night with me. But he’s a very passionate man who is intelligent about the issues in this country.”
At the time, Fahey said he was embarrassed and upset by Biden’s response but didn’t think Biden’s mistakes were serious enough to cause him to leave the race.
“I think perhaps under stressful situations at times, all of us may embellish a little bit and may not handle it 100 percent the way we should,” he told The Associated Press just after Biden dropped out. “I feel sorry that this particular thing that I was involved in affected him as adversely as it did.”
Biden apologized to Fahey four months after his outburst, and again last fall at another campaign event in Claremont.
“You’re Frank Fahey, aren’t you,” Fahey recalls Biden saying before he had finished introducing himself. “I owe you a big apology. It’s 20 years too late.”
Fahey said his adult children remain puzzled that their father could support a man who had insulted him in such a manner. But Fahey said he pays attention to the candidates’ policies and records, not their gaffes.
“I came out of there that night shaking my head,” Fahey said of the 1987 incident. “Absolutely, I was insulted. He was toe to toe with me and pointing his finger in my face. But the more I learned, and the more that event went on, it just got ridiculous.”
Jay, at least Biden apologized to Mr. Fahey. The chances of Newman apologizing to Biden are about as likely as are the chances of seeing Pope Benedict in the “mosh pit” at a Marilyn Manson concert.
The host was wrong, but he picked an appropriate target. Biden has about as much right to complain about people making stuff up about him as he does to complain about someone plagiarizing him.
Wait, what? There are people it’s okay to lie about? You really think it’s okay to make up shit about some people for public consumption just because they might have padded their resume, or what not, on occasion? Really? You really want to defend that position?
Jay Tea, if you have NEVER in the course of your entire life lied about some aspect of yourself, not even one small white lie to impress a chick, then you do not blow goats.
When I make public declarations about myself, fafaroo, I do NOT lie — and it’s only partly to do with integrity. As noted above, it’s far, far too easy to check up on the truth — far more so than in 1988, when Biden lied his ass off.
Let’s itemize Biden’s lies:
* Graduated at the top of his class.
* Attended law school on a full academic scholarship
* Graduated with three degrees
* Outstanding Student of the Political Science Department
All completely pulled out of his ass. And “won the international Moot Court” gets only partial credit — he was on the winning team.
Yes, it was 20 years ago. Has he changed since then?
Not hardly. During his debate with Sarah Palin, he impressed everyone with his command of the facts — until folks had time to actually check those “facts.” And it turned out that, as usual, Biden was talking out of his ass. I think my favorite was when he said McCain was “dead wrong” on Iraq, and the two had shared the same vote to authorize the war. Biden voted AGAINST the first Iraq war, FOR the current one, and AGAINST the “surge” strategy. Biden also managed to unite nearly everyone at one point on Iraq — when he proposed partitioning the country into three ethnically-based regions, everyone all shook their heads and said “who is this idiot?”
Congrats. You got yourselves a vice president who makes Dan Quayle look good. That’s a hell of an achievement – one for the history books.
J.
When I make public declarations about myself, fafaroo, I do NOT lie …
Um, that qualifier suggests you may blow goats, Jay Tea. You wanna clarify that for us?
Jay Tea, why should I believe anything said about Joe Biden by someone who has just told me that he thinks it’s ok to make up stuff about Biden? Didn’t anyone ever tell you the story of the boy who talked a lot about how it’s ok to cry wolf?
(Ok, the individual points you posted about Biden here are probably true. But what’s your problem with people making stuff up? You’ve defended someone doing that right here in this thread.)
You get points for creativity, though. What creative defense would you come up with if some conservative would get caught chopping off old ladies’ legs?
“When I make public declarations about myself, fafaroo, I do NOT lie…”
Actually, you do. You lie every time you imply you have the facts when you clearly don’t. Stating an opinion as fact is a lie.
LOL @ JT
Instead of directly responding to the post, he does the usually conservative debate tactic: LOOK AT WHAT (insert liberal here) DID!
“During his debate with Sarah Palin, he impressed everyone with his command of the facts — until folks had time to actually check those ‘facts.’”
Are you kidding? Cuz if you’re kidding, well, I take it back. Conservatives are freaking hilarious.
Jay Tea, how often have you proven dead fucking wrong on basic, easily verified facts?
It’s not even just the regional guys… I’m sure we all recall Limbaugh after the DNC quoting ‘Spengler’ from, like, the China Times or someplace, talking about what a letdown the whole thing was.
But what if they tell “noble lies?” Ain’t those OK in the wingnutosphere?
Jay, just proves what is wrong with his movement. Just admit this guy is a dumbass and move along. Instead, he argues that somehow Biden deserved it and cites a Biden exaggeration from over 20 years ago!!
Hey Jay, I heard you rumor about you, is it true? Should I write a blog post about you so everyone on google search can find it?
The guy on the talk show is a dumbass. Unless he prefaced it by saying he was just improvising and satirizing (which happens a lot on radio, and the disclaimers are often admitted by the gotcha dips like Media Matters), he needs to be smacked around a bit.
But come on… Biden is a target-rich environment. And the point I was making wasn’t that he was a bullshitter 20 years ago, but that he’s been a bullshitter for 20 years. I cited it because 1) it happened only about 20 miles from where I live, and B) it captured what I call Biden’s “3 Bs” (Bully, Bluster, and Bullshit) that he uses whenever he’s challenged.
J.
I see VP Biden as something of an arrogant blowhard, but a competent arrogant blowhard, whose verbal flights of fancy are endearing in a Yogi Berra sort of way. Long as he gets his job done (for which he appears to me eminently qualified, compared to the previous officeholder), he can amuse me now and then with an ungraceful quote. I’ll agree with JT that he may be target-rich, but that doesn’t mean it’s okay to make things up about him.
Shorter Mr. Tea: Joe Biden did something dumb 22 years ago, therefore no one should complain when a lunatic talkshow host makes up lies about him.
At least get the year right, Tea. It was 1987.
“Gunny” Bob Newman has a reputation in Denver for being one of the dumbest talkers on the air. I listen to him from time to time just for kicks, and he’s the sort of regional talk radio wingnut airtime-filler that makes posters at RedState look like WFB. He has a big hard-on for ex-military types, and loves to talk shop when not spewing right-wing talking points. He’s the sort of guy that, when backed into a corner on one of his idiotic arguments, will -seriously- begin talking about the Clenis. Think of every right-wing Limbaugh wanna-be cliche you can think of, this guy is it.
Honestly, I’m surprised to see that anyone cares about this story. Newman makes up shit all the time. It’s part of his M.O.. He’s like Larry “Lies & Videotape” Johnson in a can. He even pimped the African Press Agency BS one night.
It was for the 1988 presidential primary, Quaker. So I rounded it off. BFD. And it was a great example of what he did then, and still does now. He ain’t changed.
J.
Unless he prefaced it by saying he was just improvising and satirizing
Impossible. Conservatives don’t do humor.
Well, they don’t do it well. See Fox’s answer to the Daily Show. Or don’t, if you still want to be sentient aferwards.
Jay Tea said that Biden makes Dan Quayle look good, which is hilarious. Ipso facto, conservatives can do humor.
Biden has made verbal gaffes and mistakes through his career, sure. Biden would still have to do something so incredibly ridiculous as Quayle’s tiny skirmish with Murphy Brown before I will believe that Quayle looks good next to Biden.
So I rounded it off. BFD.
No, you didn’t “round it off”. You were careless. You thought you knew and you didn’t bother to check. Time after time you’re careless with even elementary facts.
Look, this isn’t difficult. There are two things: (a) Conservatives love fantasizing that competent liberals are, deep down, arrogant and resentful. (b) Modern right-wingers are generally detached from reality, so they make stuff up on a regular basis.
That’s all there is to it… to a degree, this is the free market at work: Jay Tea and other right-wingers WANT to hear stories like this and will reward right-wingers who tell them, creating a market for radio-liars to do so. It’s all about making people like Jay Tea feel better about their impotence and public repudiation of their gutter ideology. If it this dishonest story, Jay Tea, makes you feel better about yourself in the face of the public failure of Republican policies, then go to it. Keep it up. Remain part of the disgusting group of dishonest losers that this radio idiot represents.
And the point I was making …
Um, the point you made quite explicitly was that it’s okay to lie about someone if that person has at anytime in their life, lied about themselves. Not only does this make no ethical sense, it makes no sense period.
If I once told someone I was captain of the football team in high school when I wasn’t, would that person, or someone else, then have the perfect right to make up a story about me beating my wife? I don’t think so.
Fafaroo ought to check out what he talking about before he paints himself into a corner with no way out.
So Fafaroo, might you give us a time and place when France and the United States kicked Hezbollah out of Lebanon. That is what the arrogent blowhard that Parthenon calls competent claimed in the Vice Presidential debates.
Strangely enough that absolute fabrication never caught the attention of the media. You remember, the media with no bias.
I might point out Fafaroo you have an unhealthy interest in beastiality, perhaps counciling or therapy?
Shorter AO: I cannot back up my original accusation so here’s a bunch of other dumb stuff I can’t keep myself from typing.
Fafaroo,
Refresh my memory, my original accusation was?
““During his debate with Sarah Palin, he impressed everyone with his command of the facts — until folks had time to actually check those ‘facts.’”
Are you kidding? Cuz if you’re kidding, well, I take it back. Conservatives are freaking hilarious.
Jay Tea, how often have you proven dead fucking wrong on basic, easily verified facts”
Tell us all about Joe biden , Hezbollah and France. And stay away from those barnyard animals.
Tell us all about Joe biden , Hezbollah and France.
Syrian security? Cedar Revolution? Hot Lebanese babes with paint on their faces? Any of this sounding familiar?
Yeah, yeah, I know, Biden balled up Hezbollah with the Syrian military in Lebanon and that was wrong. But let’s not pretend he was talking about purple seagulls from Mars or something.
I’m confused with what Biden’s partition plan for Iraq has to do with lying, unless in Jay’s bizarre world, “lying” means “saying something that Jay does not agree with.” And the “turnabout” argument against Biden is rather cold-blooded since, again, he apologized to Mr. Fahey.
Yeah, yeah, I know, Biden balled up Hezbollah with the Syrian military in Lebanon and that was wrong.
Indeed the entire point was Biden got his facts wrong in the VP debates, and Fafaroo was dead wrong for insinuating that Biden got it right and that Jay was wrong for pointing out Bidens blunder.
Indeed the entire point was Biden got his facts wrong in the VP debates,
So why pretend he was talking about moon people? He conflated Syrian forces with Hezbollah. It’s not like there’s no connection.
Oh, bullshit, Quaker. Even if you grant that he meant “Syrian” versus “Hezbollah” — who had recently gained enough of a foothold in the Lebanese government that they hold veto power over any government action — just when the hell did the US and France do anything about Syria’s presence in Lebanon? All the Cedar Revolution achieved was to get Syria to pull out the uniformed forces. In reality, Syria ended up holding an even tighter hand on Lebanon — just not quite so visible.
Biden was, as is his wont, simply making shit up that sounded good. It was another example of the “The Three B’s of Joe Biden” — when challenged, Bluster, Bully, and Bullshit.
J.
For the United States and France, which have been at the center of just when the hell did the US and France do anything about Syria’s presence in Lebanon?
In 2005.
Really, you ought to read more.
So Quaker,
“That means focusing on the part of the United Nations Security Council resolution on Lebanon that demands Syria’s withdrawal, and holding off for a short time on the part that calls for Hezbollah to disarm.”
We’re 3 years or more down the road, how is that disarming Hezbollah thing going?
We’re 3 years or more down the road, how is that disarming Hezbollah thing going?
Does this mean you’re ready to admit that Biden wasn’t making stuff up?
Quaker,
Biden completely blew his prime time audition as you well know. Syria, Hezbolloah, whatever, according to Joe. You personally would crucify a Republican for making a mistake like that.
Now Quaker you have a habit of never actually addressing the meat of a post but always dancing away. Now in your vindication of Biden’s little mistake you bring up the the glory of the involvement of France with getting Syria to diminish her presense in Lebanon.
“That means focusing on the part of the United Nations Security Council resolution on Lebanon that demands Syria’s withdrawal, and holding off for a short time on the part that calls for Hezbollah to disarm”
Syria withdrew but her proxy remained. So again I ask you 3 years down the road, How is that disarming Hezbollah thing going?
Now in your vindication of Biden’s little mistake you bring up the the glory of the involvement of France with getting Syria to diminish her presense in Lebanon.
Uh, no. I didn’t bring it up. <a href=”http://www.oliverwillis.com/2009/01/07/conservatives-why/#comment-132053″You did. And you got it entirely wrong.
So again I ask you 3 years down the road, How is that disarming Hezbollah thing going?
And you accuse me of ignoring the “meat” of a post? You brought up Biden’s comments as if he was imagining something that never happened. Now you want to argue about how the thing that “didn’t happen” turned out.
Tell you what. You can educate us all on how it turned out–go nuts! By doing so, you’ll at least admit that Biden wasn’t making the whole thing up.
Tags. Bah!
Uh, no. I didn’t bring it up. You did. And you got it entirely wrong.
Biden completely blew his prime time audition as you well know.
Uh, the guy’s gonna be the next vice-president.
