Richardson Out

Bill Richardson won’t be commerce secretary, citing the investigation going on into business dealings between New Mexico and a company with ties to him. I’m sure the media vultures will jump all over this, oh well.

Obama statement:

It is with deep regret that I accept Governor Bill Richardson’s
decision to withdraw his name for nomination as the next Secretary of
Commerce.Governor Richardson is an outstanding public servant and
would have brought to the job of Commerce Secretary and our economic
team great insights accumulated through an extraordinary career in
federal and state office. It is a measure of his willingness to put
the nation first that he has removed himself as a candidate for the
Cabinet in order to avoid any delay in filling this important economic
post at this critical time. Although we must move quickly to fill the
void left by Governor Richardson’s decision, I look forward to his
future service to our country and in my administration.

  2. matt621 says:

What makes you so certain the media will jump all over this, Oliver?

Wouldn’t you be blogging this story in exactly the same dismissive tone if this were an incoming Republican administration?

  3. Yes, but as cases like Alberto Gonzales show us, the media jackals have a special sort of glee for apparent Democratic missteps versus Republican malfeasance.

  4. Jay Tea says:

Yeah, so true, Oliver. I’m sure Karl Rove will agree with you on that one 100%.

There’s the “presumption of innocence,” but this takes it to a whole new level — the accusation CAN NOT POSSIBLY BE TRUE.

I tell ya, Obama is a “Typhoid Mary” of corruption. More and more people around him keep going down in flames, but he himself remains untouched. It’s uncanny.

    J.

  5. Karl Rove has been so persecuted he has a pundit gig on Fox, a column in Newsweek, and a column in the WSJ. Poor baby.

  6. Jay Tea says:

That didn’t keep the frigging morons at TruthOut from screaming about a “sealed indictment” against him, or people like… I dunno, you — calling him a criminal.

That Rove not only survived but prospered says volumes about him… and his detractors.

Hey, Oliver, here’s a blast from the past. Who said this on October 14, 2005? If there’s no indictment from Fitzgerald, I’ll state it clearly that he investigated and could find no clear enough evidence of wrongdoing.

  7. D.R.Scott says:

First of all, I don’t know why Matt even bothers. You’ll be cheering with the rest of the mob.

Of course the Republicans will jump all over this, never mind that the Bush administration was one of the most corrupt and incompetent in history. Fox News will barely be able to contain their raging hards-ons as they scream what a pathetic fraud President Obama is.

Still, what I’m seeing is that there’s accountability in Obama’s administration because Richardson is doing the honorable thing and resigning, as well he should. Conversely, the crooks during Bush’s reign of error would simply ignore the law and dare everybody to do something about it.

Is the Richardson fiasco embarrassing? Of course it is. Will this destroy the Obama presidency? Of course not. This is just a bump in the carpet. Richardson is a soon-to-be-forgotten footnote. The only good thing about the Bush years is that the Republican party has negated any right to wag a disapproving finger at anybody.

    Let’s move on, shall we?

  8. Amused Observer says:

    LOL,
Ollie your answer that yes you would be blogging this in the same dismissive tone if this was an incoming Republican administration stretches the limits of credibility.

How many random acts of unrelated corruption does it take to create a “culture of corruption”? I know according to fairminded progressive liberals that Republicans are so designated. What is the magic number, when can you graduate from apparent missteps to the big leagues?

  9. Duros62 says:

If this were an incoming Republican admin, this would been seen as a feature, not a bug.

  10. Jay Tea says:

    Tony Rezko.
    William Ayers.
    Jeremiah Wright.
    James Johnson.
    Rod Blagojevich.
    And now, Bill Richardson.

The curse of “Typhoid Barry” claims yet another victim.

  11. Quaker in a Basement says:

    And now, Bill Richardson.

The curse of “Typhoid Barry” claims yet another victim.

That’s right, Mr. Tea. Bill Richardson was doing just fine before he took up with Obama. That’s when all his problems started!

Is there anything so ridiculous that you hesitate to write it?

  12. Jay Tea says:

Quaker, nice to see you are still colossally stupid. There should be consistency in the world.

The “Typhoid Barry” idea (that I believe I came up with independently) is that somehow simply being around Barack Obama either makes people turn corrupt or have their corruption exposed — but never touches Obama directly. He’s a “carrier” of corruption, unaffected by it personally, but taking down all sorts of people around him.

I understand that might be a bit of a tough concept for you to grasp (as it involves metaphor and historical allusion, as well as actual thought), but I think it fits.

    J.

  13. mambochicken23 says:

ayTea, as usual, you’re an idiot.

William Ayers conducted all his dastardly deeds well before Obama was even old enough to drive. He was “exposed” before Obama had graduated college, and by the time Obama had anything to do with him he was an upstanding citizen in Chicago.

Jeremiah Wright is not “corrupt”. He said some things that were politically inconvenient for Obama, but isn’t corrupt. Or are you stretching the definition of corrupt to include everyone who you simply don’t like?

Rod Blagojevich and Obama have little to no connection at all. Keep saying they do, though… it’ll work out for you, no doubt.

I find it interesting that you try to latch onto all these issues, no matter how small and meaningless (Wright, Blagojevich, Ayers, and Rezko I don’t think are big deals), while for the last 8 years you’ve been defending Bush with all the actual corruption surrounding his administration that, you know, has negatively affected/ended people’s lives. You fucking hack.

  14. Apparently Jaytea thinks that liberal bloggers attacking Rove is the same thing as the MSM embracing him. I never know with you guys whether the stupidity is an act or real.

  15. Quaker in a Basement says:

The “Typhoid Barry” idea (that I believe I came up with independently) is that somehow simply being around Barack Obama either makes people turn corrupt or have their corruption exposed

So just to make sure I understand: Richardson gets campaign contributions in 2003. The contributor gets a state contract in 2004.
A federal grand jury starts poking into this in 2008.

And your conclusion is: Because Obama!

    Is that it, Mr. Tea?

  16. Sean D. Martin says:

Amused 0: How many random acts of unrelated corruption does it take to create a “culture of corruption”?

According to you, one. But only when speaking of Democrats.

  17. Sean D. Martin says:

    Jay Tea: Tony Rezko.
    William Ayers.
    Jeremiah Wright.
    James Johnson.
    Rod Blagojevich.
    And now, Bill Richardson.

The curse of “Typhoid Barry” claims yet another victim.

    Ken Lay
    Michael Brown
    Alberto Gonzales
    Claude Allen
    Scooter Libby
    Jack Abramoff
    Tom Delay
    Porter Goss
    Leandro Aragoncillo
    Bernard Kerik
    Karl Rove

Oh, this is a fun game!

  18. Jay Tea says:

Apparently Barack Obama’s stint as a “top advisor” in Blagojevich’s 2002 race for governor is going down the memory hole. Whoops, guess I missed that memo…

And I’m still working on the “Typhoid Barry” meme. Essentially, it boils down to “bad things happen to people around Obama, but somehow it never quite touches him directly.”

But back to Richardson… Oliver, just what is it that makes you so absolutely convinced that Richardson is an innocent victim?

Actually, it’s a nice little tactic… pre-emptively declare any and all revelations about Obama’s choice as merely the work of “media vultures.” It’s typical Media Matters… fire a few warning shots at the press to remind them that they are NOT allowed to stray off the liberal reservation and expose wrongdoing by Democrats unless it’s just too flagrant to ignore.

I don’t even know the details of the charges against Richardson, and don’t care. As it develops, I might find it interesting enough to follow, or not. But far more interesting is how others react to it. In Oliver’s case, it’s a knee-jerk “shoot the messengers” response.

    J.

  19. Amused Observer says:

    Sean,
Are we past one corrupt Democrat yet? How many would you say we had? I don’t even know if a Democrat can be corrupt, as Duros loves to say, (he must have just heard the phrase) It’s a feature not a bug.

  20. Quaker in a Basement says:

The “Typhoid Barry” idea (that I believe I came up with independently) is that somehow simply being around Barack Obama either makes people turn corrupt or have their corruption exposed…

    —————

And I’m still working on the “Typhoid Barry” meme. Essentially, it boils down to “bad things happen to people around Obama, but somehow it never quite touches him directly.”

Fascinating, Mr. Tea. I’ve never seen anyone actually admit to character assassination quite so openly.

  21. Jay Tea says:

Then you should check out my former “colleague” from Wizbang Blue, Lee Ward, Quaker. He freely admits he keeps the “Bristol Palin is Trig Palin’s true birth mother” purely for character assassination — some kind of payback over the Jeremiah Wright mess, I think.

The “Typhoid Barry” is an odd phenomenon, and not one that necessarily reflects on Obama’s character. I’m still exploring it. I might end up dumping it, I might not.

But so far it’s fascinating, trying to see who will be the next Obama colleague/crony to crash and burn. I’m gonna go out on a limb and say Eric Holder, the AG nominee who has a TON of appalling things in his past.

Oh, and Quaker: thanks for finally conceding you don’t know what the hell you’re talking about with the Middle East.

    J.

  22. Sean D. Martin says:

Jay Tea: And I’m still working on the “Typhoid Barry” meme. Essentially, it boils down to “bad things happen to people around Obama, but somehow it never quite touches him directly.”

Well why not just call him the “Teflon President”. Oh, right. That one’s already been used….

  23. Sean D. Martin says:

Amused 0: Are we past one corrupt Democrat yet? How many would you say we had?

There you go again, trying to get others to do your homework for you and provide the support you need for your claims.

You are the one who tagged Democrats as a “culture of corruption”. You are the one who has to show how many there have been.

  24. Oliver, just what is it that makes you so absolutely convinced that Richardson is an innocent victim?
Please point out where I said that. Oh, I didn’t.

pre-emptively declare any and all revelations about Obama’s choice as merely the work of “media vultures.” It’s typical Media Matters…
“Revelations”? No, I’m discussing the media doing what it regularly does: Blowing up simple things about Democrats into a global scandal (for instance, claiming the Obama campaign is releasing a “secret” report about contact with Blago) and rubber stamping Republican ones (the Bush administration).

In Oliver’s case, it’s a knee-jerk “shoot the messengers” response.
Considering that the MSM messengers have the blood on thousands on their hands as a result of playing pattycake with the right, my lack of confidence has a pretty strong base to stand on.

  25. Jay Tea says:

Considering that the MSM messengers have the blood on thousands on their hands…

    Thousands? Try MILLIONS.

CNN’s playing pattycake with Saddam to preserve their “access” is just the latest dating back decades, with the most heinous example being the New York Times’ Walter Duranty covering up Stalin’s genocide in the Ukraine and other atrocities.

But if you can get people talking about that (sheesh, that old standard? “Bush lied, people died?”), they might forget that Obama apparently got conned and actually took Richardson at his word and didn’t properly vet the guy who they not only ran against in the primary, but was about to place in the Cabinet (and in the line of presidential succession). I guess that’s what he meant by “hope and change” — “we’re going to Change how we vet nominees and instead of investigating them, we’ll just take their word for things and Hope they’re telling the truth.”

No, this doesn’t make Obama look corrupt. Just naive and inexperienced — things those of us who didn’t support him have been saying all along.

    J.

  26. Jay Tea says:

Sean, “teflon” doesn’t quite fit. I prefer my “typhoid” metaphor…

And are you REALLY asking for a laundry list of corrupt Democrats? Man, you’re braver (or dumber) than I thought possible if you’re challenging people to come up with a list of corrupt Democrats…

    J.

  27. Quaker in a Basement says:

thanks for finally conceding you don’t know what the hell you’re talking about with the Middle East.

Um, OK. And thank you for admitting that I am the legitimate heir to the throne of France…I guess.

(You’ll have to forgive me…I’m rather new at this “magical reality” thing you seem have going on. I actually have no idea what you’re carrying on about.)

  28. Quaker in a Basement says:

Then you should check out my former “colleague” from Wizbang Blue, Lee Ward, Quaker. He freely admits he keeps the “Bristol Palin is Trig Palin’s true birth mother” purely for character assassination

You mean to say there are others like you? These are dark days indeed.

  29. Jay Tea says:

You’d probably get along with him just fine, Quaker. You share much in the areas of ideology, ethics, temperament, and relationship with reality.

He’s probably a bit more of a sociopath, though.

    J.

  30. Quaker in a Basement says:

You’d probably get along with him just fine, Quaker. You share much in the areas of ideology, ethics, temperament, and relationship with reality.

This isn’t that kind of site, Tea. Besides, I’m married.

  31. Amused Observer says:

“He freely admits he keeps the “Bristol Palin is Trig Palin’s true birth mother” purely for character assassination”

Now that is a bit of refreshing honesty from the left.

  32. fafaroo says:

The “Typhoid Barry” idea (that I believe I came up with independently)…

I don’t think there’s any question that you came up with this one all on your own Jay Tea. Especially when you said you meant it literally, as in Obama is literally passing on corruption to other politicians as if it were a contagious disease.

Only you could have come up with an analogy so wildly off the mark and then applied it in such a moronic fashion.

  33. fafaroo says:

And I’m still working on the “Typhoid Barry” meme. Essentially, it boils down to “bad things happen to people around Obama, but somehow it never quite touches him directly.”

Oh man. Please keep burning the midnight oil on this one, Jay Tea. We all await the perfection of this little gem.

Here’s a suggestion though: Take a minute and actually look up who Typhoid Mary was and what the reference actually means. If you’ve still got the energy after that daunting research task, try looking up the words “analogy” and “meme”.

  34. Sean D. Martin says:

JT: And are you REALLY asking for a laundry list of corrupt Democrats? Man, you’re braver (or dumber) than I thought possible if you’re challenging people to come up with a list of corrupt Democrats…

No, you idiot. I’m pointing out that any list of supposed Obama-associates would be far overshadowed by a list of actual Bush-associates.

But by all means, continue to see everything through your warped world view.

  35. Quaker in a Basement says:

No, you idiot. I’m pointing out that any list of supposed Obama-associates would be far overshadowed by a list of actual Bush-associates.

In all fairness, Sean, Mr. Tea is probably counting the paid-off bureaucrat at the Hawaii Department of Health who forged Mr. Obama’s birth certificate and the coroner who falsified the cause of his grandmother’s death.

    Also, raccoon silverware carburetor ding!

  36. fafaroo says:

(as it involves metaphor and historical allusion, as well as actual thought),

Jesus. I totally missed this. You should add “metaphor” to your research list, Jay Tea.

For bonus points, look up “irony” too so you can understand why I always find it so amusing when you, of all people, accuse others of being incapable of “actual thought”.

  37. PD100 says:

“I tell ya, Obama is a “Typhoid Mary” of corruption. More and more people around him keep going down in flames, but he himself remains untouched. It’s uncanny.”

Speak on, gimp! Carry on with the nomination! Think of him as John Negroponte or Elliott Abrams.

  38. Sean D. Martin says:

QiaB: In all fairness, Sean, Mr. Tea is probably counting the paid-off bureaucrat at the Hawaii Department of Health who forged Mr. Obama’s birth certificate and the coroner who falsified the cause of his grandmother’s death.

Actually, Q, I’d be disappointed if he left them out out as that would be very uncharacteristic of him. Of course, even if/when he includes them his list would be far shorter than what I could come up with.

  39. Jay Tea says:

Keep showing how clueless you two are, Quaker and Sean. I’ve actually written about how stupid the whole “birth certficate” issue is, and actually half buy into one theory I read — Obama knows it’s all bullshit, but refuses to cooperate simply because it keeps the dumbest of his detractors all wrapped up in it and not causing real mischief.

And Sean, are you SERIOUSLY comparing Bush and Obama cronies on the basis of raw numbers? A former governor and two-term president vs. a formser state legislator who treated his four years in the US Senate as a part-time job? Good god, get real.

But back to the matter at hand… the more I think about it, the more it reinforces what I (and a lot of others) were saying all along: this shows that Obama is incompetent, inexperienced, naive, or all three.

For the sake of the country, I hope he’s a hell of a fast learner.

    J.

  40. Jaim says:

Hehe. A Republican caring about “the sake of the country” after eight-years of ideologically-driven disaster on the part of his party.

That’s precious, Jay. Keep ‘em coming.

  41. fafaroo says:

    … I hope he’s a hell of a fast learner.

And what kind of learner are you, Jay Tea?

  42. Jay Tea says:

fafaroo, the kind of learner that remembers Ronald Reagan’s aphorism: “trust, but verify.”

A lesson Obama should have learned a long, long time ago, but apparently hasn’t…

…because now there’s a possible scandal with Hillary Clinton. It seems she pushed hard for a deal in Syracuse right after the developer made a very healthy donation to her husband’s foundation…

Obama’s now coming across as a second-rate Diogenes, trying to find just a few honest Democrats to fill out his Cabinet. And he can’t understand it — they keep TELLING him they’re clean, so what’s the problem?

I guess they think that because it worked with the Blagojevich mess (“we investigated ourselves thoroughly, and gave ourselves a clean bill of health!”), the same tactic works for others, too. Oops…

    J.

  43. Jay Tea says:

Oh, and Jaim, get with the message: we’re not talking about the last eight years, but the next four years. It’s Hope and Change Time. Try to keep up, will ya?

(Gotta find that “dissent is the highest form of patriotism” button…)

    J.

  44. fafaroo says:

fafaroo, the kind of learner that remembers Ronald Reagan’s aphorism: “trust, but verify.”

RFLMAO. Verify what, exactly, Jay Tea? You certainly can’t mean the facts.

The only reason why anyone knows anything about the Syracuse developer giving money to Bill Clinton’s foundation is because the Obama team required the Clinton’s to reveal the foundation’s donors as part of its vetting process. The Obama team did this, even though it is legal to keep foundation donors secret.

Unlike campaign contribution regulations, there is no federal law requiring former presidents or their spouses to disclose money they collect for their foundations. Nor are there legal limits on the sources or amounts of such money.

But the Clintons last month revealed the identity of donors to Bill Clinton’s foundation as part of an agreement with President-elect Barack Obama, who selected Hillary Clinton as his nominee for secretary of state.

    http://www.islandpacket.com/front/story/714164.html

Jay Tea, how many times do you have to be proven wrong before you’ll just shut the fuck up?

  45. Andrew says:

But back to the matter at hand… the more I think about it, the more it reinforces what I (and a lot of others) were saying all along: this shows that Obama is incompetent, inexperienced, naive, or all three.

SERIOUSLY? Gee, you don’t get incompetence quite as bad as the governor and two-term president you just touted.

While I question your assessment of Obama, I have no doubt he is a fast learner, as the election suggests. Of course, compared to Chimpy McRetard, Obama is a genius.

  46. Jay Tea says:

Of course, compared to Chimpy McRetard, Obama is a genius.

That’s a hell of a low standard you’re holding him to. That’s not a very Hopey and Changeful attitude. I thought Obama was supposed to be GREAT, not merely “marginally better than Bush.”

    J.

  47. Enlightened Liberal says:

Speaking of “trust but verify”, it is very important to do that for all of Jt’s posts, because invariably he gets facts wrong.

    Trust

“…because now there’s a possible scandal with Hillary Clinton. It seems she pushed hard for a deal in Syracuse right after the developer made a very healthy donation to her husband’s foundation… ”

    Verify

“The bill with the tax-free bonds provision became law in October 2004, weeks before the donation, and the highway bill with the set-aside became law in August 2005, about nine months after the donation.”

The highway bill gave $5 million in highway improvements near a large project in Hillary Clinton’s home state and tangentially benefitted the donor (a Bush Ranger by the way). Another Malkinesque faux scandal.

  63. Bruce Henry says:

Speaking of things that don’t bother us a bit, implying that I might work part-time in food service is not a real insult, AO. I do. Pizza, though, not burgers and fries.
Now, if I called you a snooty, snobby, look-down-your-nose-at-the-hired-help motherfucking asshole, that would be an insult.
For a backassward, racist, half-smart rube like yourself to have the temerity to feel superior to anyfuckingbody in the world is hilarious.
Let me know if any of those bother you a bit. No, on second thought, don’t.
