Weird Robbery Or Wacky Sitcom Plot?

I swear I remember Cousin Larry from Perfect Strangers doing this.

A 19-year-old Hutchinson man was arrested after allegedly breaking into his own home and stealing a car, jewelry, some money, and other items. Police said he allegedly lured his other family members away Friday afternoon by making a dinner reservation for them in Chanhassen. Then, while they were away, he broke into the garage and house, grabbed the booty, and took off in the car.

  • how embarassing. how is he gonna explain that to the family. I hope they do charge him for this

  • awaiting possible burglary and auto theft charges

WTF? Can you really be charged with stealing your own stuff? I’d understand filing a false report, tying up police resources, possibly even insurance fraud if he had gotten around to filing some sort of claim, those kind of charges.

But breaking your own window and taking your own stuff?

  • The implication I’m reading is he didn’t just steal his own stuff, but his family’s, too — which means yeah, he can be charged.

    J.
