Hawaii’s Otherness To Be A Repeated MSM/Right Wing Theme

Right now is the point in which the right wing and the MSM will agree on the really stupid things to attack Barack Obama with. One holdover from the campaign is echoed today by Townhall.com’s Matt Lewis, claiming that Obama is out of the country because he’s spending the holiday with his family in Hawaii.

Just today Media Matters’ readers chose Cokie Roberts attacking Obama for going to Hawaii as the most inane comments of the year.

For those of you who aren’t clear, Hawaii is one of our 50 states.

It looks like this:

Hawaii is the only state with an authentic royal palace. It’s “Navy” is only challenged by those maintained by Massachusetts, New York, North Carolina, Alabama, Texas, and California. And, I believe, Hawaii’s independence/separatist movement is more vigorous than Alaska’s.

All that being said, if I had the wherewithal to vacation in Hawaii, I would do so. Good for Obama for managing to cover family obligations AND chill in the Aloha State.

“And, I believe, Hawaii’s independence/separatist movement is more vigorous than Alaska’s.”

Your “beliefs” are meaningless without actual evidence. Some idiots “believe” that 9/11 was an “inside job,” that doesn’t mean that such a thing has any basis in fact whatsoever.

  4. alice says:

Currently in Chicago the windchill is below 0. If I had family in Hawaii, you can be sure I’d be over there right now visiting them for the holidays while recovering from frostbite and getting in some beach time.

  5. SaveFarris says:

It’s not as if the notion is that unfounded.

  6. C.S.Strowbridge says:

“Your ‘beliefs’ are meaningless without actual evidence.”

Nothing more needs to be said.

  7. I’m always amused at the right’s ability to justify the dumbest crap with a straight face.

“Martians could be eating our brains right now?”
    “I don’t think so”
“It’s not as if the notion is that unfounded.

  8. They shoot LOST there, for God’s sake! LOST! What’s more American than Lost?

OW: Matt Lewis, claiming that Obama is out of the country

    Whaaa-t?

Lewis: However, you know, you could make an argument that if he wants it to appear to be not a big deal he would be out of the country.

He would be out of the country, not is.

Reading skills dropping during the holidays, folks?

  10. Jaim says:

Obama doing his vacay in Hawaii, in a very small way, sums up what an awesome job he did totally mind-fucking the Republican smear machine. On the one hand, he was supposed to be Scary Blackman. On the other hand, we was Out-Of-Touch-Fairy. The whole time, he just stayed true to who he was — a smart, capable guy who happens to be black and happens to be from Hawaii.

    /sound of Republican heads asploding

  11. Mylegacy says:

As a west coast Canadian I’ve visited the lovely Hawaiian shores many times. A great place. I am particularly fond of Lahaina on Maui, though I love it all.

To Daniel Rotter above may I suggest he travel to Hawaii as a Canadian tourist…you’d be surprised how much anti-American sentiment there is on the Islands. I’ve actually had Hawaiians tell me they should have stayed with Britain and or joined Canada. By the way – we’d be delighted to have them join us – ’specially between December and March!

  12. Parthenon says:

I actually believe Hawaii ought to have much more autonomy than the other 49. But the townhall guy is still an idiot.

  13. Amused Observer says:

    Why is that Parthenon?

If Hawaii were to try to succeed from the Union would Obama be another Lincoln?

  14. mambochicken23 says:

    AO,

Yes. Personally, I root vigorously for Hawaii to succeed. If Hawaii can be successful with such a crappy global economy, I congratulate them wholeheartedly. I dare say that Hawaii’s success would be beneficial FOR the Union, and would not detract FROM the Union in any way.

    /end snark

    You’re a fucking idiot.

  15. Ramon says:

Have none of you heard of the Conch Republic down on the end of the Florida Keys? It seperated from the US years ago! Get your passport from there!

  16. Parthenon says:

If Hawaii were to try to succeed from the Union would Obama be another Lincoln?

I wouldn’t advocate secession, AO, but it seems to me that their culture and native people are distinctive -enough- to merit a little special consideration. Obviously being a state is in theirs and the U.S.’s best interests, but a little more federalism in their case wouldn’t be unwarranted, IMO.

Of course, this could just be one of those half-baked thoughts for which I later get reamed. :)

  17. Robert says:

This is another example of East Coast provincialism. I remember at university, meeting fellow students who were astonished that I’d been to DisneyLAND and not DisneyWORLD.
The idea that I actually _grew up_ in California was outside their universe of discourse.

Beltway types (yes, stereotype, I know) who would think nothing of flying to the Caribbean for the weekend imagine that Hawaii is somewhere on the east coast of New Zealand.

Because Alaska is trying to secede from the Union, is Sarah Palin another Jefferson Davis?

If there isn’t anything but ridiculously unrealistic leaps of fantasy in Republican’ts ongoing efforts to demonize everything Democratic (how’s that working out for ya, gang?), how do they function in the real world?

  19. Amused Observer says:

    Parthenon,
Not being able to drive there has kept Hawaii a unique place from the mainland. Can you imagine how many people would be living there if you could drive back and forth?

Mambo, It must have been difficult going through school with your handicaps. You are to be commended for trying.

“Because Alaska is trying to secede from the Union”

Gee I wasn’t aware that AK was actively trying to do that. Most of that talk died down when Uncle Wally left office. Although it has always been a topic of conversation as long as I’ve been up there. The Feds reneged upon thier end of the Statehood bargain, which annoys the locals to no end.

Ak is a great place. Most people actually work for a living doing useful stuff. Folks up there are self reliant and resourceful. Like Americans used to be.

  20. Jaim says:

Obama isn’t married to a former member of a secessionist party.

  21. Amused Observer says:

Be that as it may, he’s not a bitter malcontent who has only been proud of his country just recently beause the country was considering voting for his wife. And while the mainstreanm liberal media loves to harp on bible thumpers neither one of the Palins belong to a whacked out racist church who believes America has been damned by God and thinks that aids is a government plot to exterminate black people.

An Alaskan secessionist is a far better American that an unrepentant terrorist who helped launch a recent presidential candidate’s campaign and is still active polluting our childrens minds with his bullshit.

LOL, for that matter Alaskan secessionists are much more patriotic that garden variety liberals.

  22. Duros62 says:

Most people actually work for a living doing useful stuff. Folks up there are self reliant and resourceful.

Doesn’t every man woman and child get a hefty handout from the state? Highest rate of meth addiction per capita. Highest rate of rape per capita.

    That’s sure useful.

  23. daniel rotter says:

“…he’s not a bitter malcontent who has only been proud of his country just recently because the country was considering voting for his wife”.

At troubling as Michelle Obama’s comments were, you actually think they were WORSE than being a member of a secessionist party?

“An Alaskan seccionist is a far better American than an unrepentant terrorist…”

True, but that unrepentant terrorist wasn’t the spouse of a vice-presidential candidate.

    “…who helped launh a recent presidential candidate’s campaign…”

Ayers didn’t “launch” Barack Obama’s presidential campaign, but don’t let facts get in the way of your screed.

“LOL, for that matter Alaskan secessionists are much more patriotic than garden variety liberals.”

Wonderful, a guy who implies that Americans don’t “work for a living doing useful stuff” and aren’t “self reliant and resourceful” lecturing us on being patriotic about America. Kind of like Larry Flynt lecturing people on the evils of porn. Self-awareness is not AO’s strong suit.

  24. Porlock Junior says:

This crap about Hawaii casts new light on the old saying:

    What goes away, comes around.

What? It was “goes around”? I like my version better. I mean, Hawaii took a year longer to get statehood than Alaska — and held both of them up a few years because Hawaii was clearly inevitably going to follow Alaska — precisely because the racists could not stand to see a multiracial place, which was pretty peaceful about the matter, invade and pollute our good old USA. I mean, Senator Fulbright, one of the smartest and decentest people in the Congress, voted against statehood for Hawaii. After all, he represented the state of Orval Faubus, and he had to stay in office somehow if he was going to do his good work.

So, that’s all dead and gone and forgotten now. For years and years.

And the sons of those same southern die-hard SOBS, or the grandsons or whatever, have now discovered that Hawaii is a foreign country because President Scary Black Man came from there. Enjoy it. Those guys are suffering. And I love the principle that one should hope for nasty people to be redeemed; but as long as they stay nasty, it’s just fine that it’s hurting them.

  25. Amused Observer says:

    Danny Boy,
I stand corrected it wasn’t a recent presidential campaign that an unrepentant terrorist helped launch, it was a local campaign in a state infamous for crooked dirty politics. The rest of the post still stands.

Scratch a liberal and a coward bleeds. I just love that line! :)
