Your particular perturbations in regards to certain regional dialects is a real-time example of how easily divided we are as a species, let alone as Americans.

I was born and raised in the midwest. I have been in Jackson MS for the last thirty years. My accent and mannerisms just scream “Dam Liberal Yankee” to everyone native to the area.

When I visit with family up north, they immediately focus on what I refer to as the “Y’all factor”. I’ll be the first to admit that the proper conjugation of the verb ‘to be’ takes a serious beating around here. It’s hard, when in Rome, not to act as a Roman.

Much as I love Arianna Huffington, I literally cannot stomach listening to the woman speak. Did I mention that I love her? Not just because she’s hot (to an old guy like me) like Farrah Fawcett used to be in my younger days, but because she’s smart as a whip. Maybe I’m biased since I am married to a professional woman with verifiable foreign provenance (and the ability to converse (cuss me out) in half dozen languages?

Lighten up on the southern slander. They’re people too, even the ones who think YOU owe them a favor for having been enslaved and brought here in the first place. I’ll admit they’re not the fastest learners, but I’m doing the best I can with the tools God gave me to work with.

You can say what you want about Boston accents or Southern accents, but that screech that issues forth from Sarah Palin is the fingernails-on-the-blackboardiest noise I ever heard in my fucking life.

Whenever I hear a southern accent from someone, that person instantly has a big setback to make up for with me. Now, the flat, nasal, monotoned Upper Midwestern accent (think Garrison Keilor), that’s home to me.

The native New England/ Boston accent is the worst accent in the US.
I second and third this. I’ll take the deepest southern accent over one from Walpole, MA.

The native New England/ Boston accent is the worst accent in the US. The six years I spent in South Boston were a never ending assault on my ears by the locals.

I could listen to southern women talk all day.

I suspect this might be a regional issue, where Tennessee southern accents grate on the ears much more than, say, Georgia southern accents.

I’m a New Englander, too, but I currently live in Nashville. Corker’s voice is really nasal and he sounds so slow-witted (like Phil Gramm). He just damaged his re-election prospects, too: you don’t piss off Saturn workers (the big plant is in the state) and tire workers (two big plants in the state that supply GM and Ford).

I gotta agree………I’m a New Englander ,,,got my biases…a GOOD Southern accent is spoken by Roy Blount Jr. Bob Corker would not say Y’all the way Y’all should be said to Y’all….just my humble opinion.
