The Lieberman Thing

Proves once again, that while control of the House and Senate are nice to have, the Presidency is the real prize because when the House and Senate are stupid they are very stupid.

They better have some dirt on Lieberman so when he betrays them, and he will, they can shut him down.

  2. C.S.Strowbridge says:

On a side note, I hope Lamont runs again to unseat Lieberman.

Why do I get the feeling Lieberman has some dirt on everybody else? Why else would they keep propping him up like this?

    I don’t get it.

  4. ed says:

I can’t imagine Lieberrman will run again. Not at this point anyway.

Out party always acts like its in the minority

  6. SpiderJ says:

I loathe Lieberman, but wonder if this is simply the best strategy in a series of uncomfortable options. Is it better to keep Lieberman in the yard on a short leash or to simply let him run free and damage property as he’s always intended to do?

Uh, perhaps because he votes with them almost all of the time?

Politically, it’s a smart move by the Democratic leadership because they need his vote on a variety of issues.

But it also goes to show that they have nuts the size of raisins for allowing him to keep his chair despite openly and strongly campaigning for a Republican candidate in the Presidential election.

  8. SaveFarris says:

It doesn’t really matter whether the Dems get to 60. If they get 58 (which I think they already have), they’ve got the “Turn DC into a state” card in their back pocket. Voila! 2 extra Democratics in the Senate.

  9. they’ve got the “Turn DC into a state” card in their back pocket.

    Wow.

  10. KXB says:

In their focus on attaining a filbuster-proof majority, the Democrats are simply encouraging future Liebermans. Should the Republicans show Ted Stevens the door, this will make the Dems look so focused on Washington machinations that they will tolerate any insult, just for a vote.

  11. gus says:

farris- even if it were that easy to admit DC as a state, the addition of two more senators would change the supermajority to 61 (or 62 if they round up). So the democrats would still fall short.

  13. OW:
What’s the deal with the DC Democrats. Do they realize how people outside DC look at them? Or is it that they don’t care because they get re-elected anyway.

  14. Dave in SoCal says:

Senator Says Secret-Ballot in Private Meeting to Determine Whether Democrats Punish Lieberman

Senate Democrats will vote by secret ballot on Sen. Joseph I. Lieberman ’s fate this week, according to North Dakota Sen. Byron L. Dorgan .

Lawmakers will write their vote on slip of paper, those papers will be collected and counted, and the final tally will be read aloud to the caucus. Lieberman, then, will be able to know how many of his colleagues stood with him but will not know their identities.

So the same senators who are pushing to pass the union-friendly “card check” legislation, which will take secret ballots away from American workers (and expose them to harassment from fellow employees and union officials), want to retain that privilege for themselves.

    Most. Ethical. Congress. Ever

Hey look! The environment is on fire! We’re at War (twice)! The economy is in the dumper! Great Depression! Guantanamo! Missile shields/WWIII? Lieberman!

Which of the above doesn’t fit in the group?

Get over it. The guy sucks but he has a vote. He won’t be re-elected. That will be punishment enough.

There are more important issues and the more time spent on him the more power he is handed.

Obama is showing how he’s rubber and Lieberman is glue.

I’m sick of hearing about it. Like Palin.

  16. midderpidge says:

They should have chucked Lieberman out. The process should have gone something like this:

Senator Lieberman, when you campaigned for this chairmanship you promised oversight and investigation. Katrina response was a particular example. So, inre your investigation into the Katrina disaster, what have you found out?

Into multiple incidents of contractor fraud in Iraq, what have you found out?

Pat Tillan’s death and cover up, what have you found out?

White House pre-war claims, what have you found out?

Dozens of other things you should have been overseeing, what have you found out?

Other than finding Obama to be a muslim terrorist, what have you learned as chairman to date?

The answer to all questions is “nothing”. Why was this even an issue?

  17. Sean D. Martin says:

    midderpidge, what you said.

It isn’t that he was a Republican, and a particularly nasty one at that, while on the campaign trail. It’s that he isn’t competent at the job.

Unfortunately, the Dems are doing what they do best: Running scared of offending someone.

“Joe, you’re out. If you don’t like it, tough shit. If you want to caucus with the Repubs, go ahead. Bring it on, we’ll deal with it. But you are out.”

Alas, the Dems still lack a spine. Color me surprised.

  18. Parthenon says:

Do we all hate Sen. Lieberman for supporting the war and Sen. McCain’s candidacy? In other words, for not being a party man?

    Honest question.

  19. C.S.Strowbridge says:

“The answer to all questions is “nothing”. Why was this even an issue?”

Because the media framed it as the Democrats getting revenge, and the Democrats don’t have a sack to defend themselves with.

  20. midderpidge says:

Look, its do the job or turn it over to someone who can. Maybe this is part of Lieberman’s reward for singlehandedly defeating the McCain campaign as a double agent. Double Joe 7.

  21. Loserbroadside says:

Lieberman will get re-elected. Trust me. I grew up in CT; every cycle the Republican’s run some weakling candidate, and eveyone votes for Lieberman. Lieberman has been big with the GOP voters in CT for ages. H beat both Weicker and Lamont because of them. I see no reason he’ll loose them next time around.
