I don't agree with all of Kinky Friedman's libertarian riffs but his animal respect and rescue cred is impeccable. His definition of white hairs on ageing pups' noses is that it's sugar.
Yep.

I'd much rather have a Batdog than a Superdog.
Good luck cleaning up after a dog with indestructible poop.

Duros,

Krauthammer's conclusions are frequently dumb. One of my favorites was his claim that we should put more money into "curing" heart disease -- a degenerative illness that mostly can be traced to genetics and lifestyle choices regarding smoking, diet and exercise, and thus is a matter of prevention and treatment (you don't cure heart disease, you keep it from happening or you mitigate its effects on arteries, veins, lungs and the heart itself) -- than into finding cures for viruses, which have a consistent method of transmission and which we've successfully "cured" in the past through vaccines. Of course the genesis of his idea was his disinclination to spend a lot on HIV/AIDS research when there were diseases with greater effect on old, straight American men.

But he doesn't usually go for blatant factual inaccuracies, which is why I thought perhaps I was missing something in consumer car-buying trends. It's not really my area, and Krauthammer could know something I don't about it.

Utterly off-topic, but can anyone explain what Krauthammer is talking about here?

One of the reasons Detroit is in such difficulty is that consumers have been resisting the smaller, less powerful, less safe cars forced on the industry by fuel-efficiency mandates. Now Detroit would be forced to make even more of them.

Haven't the foreign automakers who embraced small cars been doing just fine? Toyota has even said that it's still going ahead with opening a new plant in Mississippi despite the economic downturn and its own significant drop in sales compared to 3rd quarter 2007. A friend of mine was trying to buy a used car in March, and she couldn't find a hybrid in her price range -- the dealerships around Philly were sold out -- but she COULD get a big, powerful, "safe" SUV.

Megan McArdle may be right that labor costs pushed Detroit to stick with building the big cars that had higher profit margins, but the idea that customers have rejected fuel-efficient cars is pretty stupid even for Krauthammer.
