  1. This is so fucking sweet.

  2. jr says:

Oliver and Obama can have a moment like Homer and Gerald Ford on the Simpsons “do you like Jessica Alba?”

  3. ed says:

Whatever, dude. Call me when Obama’s reading Buffy and Angel.

  4. You mean comics for poseurs? I’m just kidding, but reading those are like reading comics-lite. Any sort of adaptation falls in that category.

  5. rat_bastard says:

Dude Oliver, bite your tongue. Buffy and Angel Season 8 and 6 are fucking awesome, this is a rare epic fail on your part.

  6. Pete says:

    From the ‘50 things’ list:

How have the right not picked up on these yet…

    * He plans to install a basketball court in the White House grounds
    * He wears $1,500 (£952) Hart Schaffner Marx suits

Also, I thought he *had* quit smoking. Not that I care – smoking is still cool no matter what the media tell us.

    But…but…isn’t “Conan” an adaptation?

Well anyway, Roy Thomas’ version of “Conan” for Marvel was great. Glad to see a Marvel fan in the Oval Office!

  8. arbitrista says:

But Conan is just so lame!

More impressive to me is that he can DRAW. His doodles show he coulda trained to draw his OWN comics. His sketch of Harry Reid was even identifiable:

This is cool! I have to say that I’m more of a Batman fan.

BTW, congrats on the new picture! The old one was kinda bad. But for the next one, you should try smiling! :-)

  11. [...] wrote an entry where he got all excited to learn that Barack Obama collects Spider-Man comic books. To be honest, I never understood the whole craze behind comic books. Yeah, I appreciate the [...]

Comic books aside, so far, maybe not so awesome ….DOW down 1342 points since the election.

    A Barack Market

Much of this is due to hedge fund deleveraging, as well as dreadful corporate earnings reports and pessimism that the recession will be deeper than many had hoped. We also don’t want to read too much into short-term market moves. But there’s little doubt that uncertainty, and some fear, over Barack Obama’s economic agenda is also contributing to the downdraft.

  13. SaveFarris says:

I’m imagining the headlines if we had found out that George W. Bush collected those same issues …

  14. Parthenon says:

Headline: “President Bush engages in nerdy hobby for which you don’t need to earn seven figures.”

Yes, Farris, nerdiness would even be somewhat endearing in Republicans.

Keep beating that horse, dennis. Maybe it will come back to life.

You are messing with forces you quite obviously do not understand. I advise you to cease and desist at your earliest convenience.

  17. ed says:

George W. Bush reads Marmaduke. And Family Circus.

  18. ed says:

DOW down 1342 points since the election.

dennis raises a good point, per usual. This happened on George Bush, Jr.’s watch. He is unquestionably the worst [technical] president ever.

A brilliant riposte to an argument no one here is making!

  20. Snackules says:

Well, the Spider-Man thing is fine, what with the great power/great responsibility thing, but the Conan thing makes me concerned about his foreign policy. Also, wizards with enchanted orbs in deep caverns.

  21. Sean D. Martin says:

SaveFarris: I’m imagining the headlines if we had found out that George W. Bush collected those same issues …

Undoubtedly they’d be quite different. He’d be ridiculed for it and the view taken would be that “kiddie books” with pictures are all he’s capable of reading.

The reason, Farris, that Obama’s reading of comics doesn’t get the same reaction is because nobody can legitimately accuse Obama of being stupid.

It isn’t the reading of comic books. It’s the obvious intellectual capacity of the person doing the reader. Bush has demonstrated a marked lack of brain power and incredible dis-interest in intellectual pursuits and comic book reading would reinforce that. Obama has demonstrated significant intellect and comic book reading is seen for him in a different light.

  22. Syco says:

    Why of course he could.
If he watched Dr.Who, Torchwood and Skins.

  23. Tim Fuller says:

Let’s see how awesome he really turns out to be, Spidey aside.

My ‘one-hit wonder’ over at TPM, currently top recommended in the Muckracker section:

Which is of course a prejudice against comic books that comic book readers deal with often, but that’s neither here nor there.

Remember, though, Bush has read The Stranger. Allegedly.

  26. Sean D. Martin says:

Which is of course a prejudice against comic books that comic book readers deal with often

    Indeed. Alas….

  27. its on us now and to have his back we need to be critical and supportive, Obama has yet to deal with the structrual concerns of our economy in his proposals on the campaign trail , nor has Paulson or Bernake, we all just a Pay check away from a pink slip

  28. Duros Hussein 62 says:

SaveFarris: I’m imagining the headlines if we had found out that George W. Bush collected those same issues …

Where did I see a cartoon somewhere that all his Daily Briefings are made up in graphic novel format?

  29. ed says:

Where did I see a cartoon somewhere that all his Daily Briefings are made up in graphic novel format?

That wasn’t a cartoon, that was a legit news report. President George Bush, Jr. had too much trouble grasping the nuanced meaning many of his PDB’s, at one time saying that the August 6, 2001 briefing, “Osama Bin Laden Determined to Strike in U.S.,” was “too confusing wordily.”

(Actual totally for real truth about Bush and PDB’s: It’s actually been reported that he has the briefs condensed and read to him. Why? Who knows. Perhaps he wants to forever cement his legacy as worst, least qualified, and most incurious President (technically) all time. That’s the most plausible reason, anyway.)

  30. PD100 says:

I’m imagining the headlines if we had found out that George W. Bush collected those same issues

-Because Dubya would read them like history books. Remember Farris, God told him to go to war with Iraq as well.

  31. ArC says:

Reminds me of “Ex Machina”, where the slightly superhuman, slightly geeky Mayor of NYC employs someone to go pick up his comics for him… (And if you’re not reading “Ex Machina”, you ought to.)

  32. Randy Brown says:

Where did I see a cartoon somewhere that all his Daily Briefings are made up in graphic novel format?

Actually, I think Bush’s briefings are written and read to him in the style of Vonnegut Jr.’s “Breakfast of Champions.”

  33. Exluddite says:

I’d like to see a press secretary who reads Transmetropolitan.

  34. SpiderJ says:

A press secretary who read Transmet would thank his or her lucky stars that they never have to deal with anybody like Spider Jerusalem. Although Matt Taibbi certainly likes to play the gadfly.

  35. Kevin says:

Old school… sweet. Wonder if he ever played D&D? LOL

  36. PG says:

What, Dennis hasn’t come back to inform y’all that the 552.59 gain in the Dow today isn’t due to Palin’s reassurance that Republican governors will be a restraint on a Democratic federal government?

  37. fafaroo says:

MEssage to Dennis: Live by the stupid, die by the stupid …

  38. rjpb says:

At least he is not a DC dork.

So the question on everyone’s mind is Ditko or Romita? (McFarlane would be an impeachable offense)

Personally I’d be more impressed if he were a big Dan Clowes or Kim Deitch fan.

  39. SpiderJ says:

For that matter, what’s his feeling about the Bendis Ultimate Spidey?

  40. Roschelle says:

Even more awesome is the fact that he’s not forgetting the internet generation! Obama’s weekly radio address aka “fireside chats” will have a new spin. He’s truly thinking of the millions of young voters who supported him.

  41. Duros Hussein 62 says:

Even more awesome is the fact that he’s not forgetting the internet generation!

That means someone might actually hear them!
