The only way I would support military spending cutbacks is if the money would be used to pick up the pace of the economy to later pick up the pace of the military spending by even spending more for a few years.. we could always get rid of about 2 aircraft carriers and spend the money on some cheaper more helpful weapons in the Navy and as for the Marines simply having everyone in the best body armor avaliable and better communications. I think it is stupid to be reducing our militaries abilities while other militaries right now are in full efforts to increase their own in hopes of being able to have an ability to wage a winnable war against the USA

here they go again. the Dems slash defense spending and the Republicans have to pick up the pieces

You're kidding, right? You mean after the Dems finish picking up the pieces of everything else the Republicans fucked up?

Won’t ever happen, but I’d like to see a rule put in place that any department (pentagon, HUD, post office, whatEVER) is not able to receive more money than they ask for. Keep Congress from padding the budget.

Not sure that's always going to be a good thing. I am reminded of Bush's refusal to request funds to help reproductive health overseas (e.g. getting modern IUDs to women in Africa and Asia so they can control how many kids they have without risking their fertility). McCain's blanket opposition to earmarks is silly -- Congress sometimes needs to say, "We're giving you $30 million, and you're going to spend it on condoms, IUDs, clean water facilities and training for doctors to repair fistulas whether you like it or not." If everything is left to the discretion of the executive branch, then nothing they dislike will get funding.

Wow. Apparently even the military thinks the military is spending too much. There is sanity in the world after all.

I'm a Hick: There have been several stories in the past of Congress mandating weapon systems the military didn’t really want. Maybe this time they can make their reluctance for these stick.

Won't ever happen, but I'd like to see a rule put in place that any department (pentagon, HUD, post office, whatEVER) is not able to receive more money than they ask for. Keep Congress from padding the budget.
