No classes today, I sit around and write and get all the good scoops.

Hall is a bargain if he's happy; a penny spent is a penny wasted if he's going to be a diva. (Just don't put him on Steve Smith one-on-one if they run up against Carolina in the playoffs.) But he likes to win and be around good players, so for this year at least, he'll probably be a good team guy in Washington.

What even Republicans are quietly conceding is that the no-regulation model promulgated by the Bush Admin, especially for the FDA, is sickening and even killing people. It's also bad for trade and the economy, as consumers both in the U.S. and worldwide panic over this tomato is safe or that drug is from an un-reviewed plant in China. So one of the top priorities of a science-minded Obama Admin has to be the proper regulation of what we're putting into our bodies.

RFK Jr. doesn't fit that agenda, nor do the people who just don't like hormones and genetically modified food but can't put forward a scientific rationale for banning them. A rejection of Republicans no-regulation regime is not an embrace of irrational regulation. However, we need to double the size of inspection staff to monitor both U.S. and foreign produced food, drugs and cosmetics. Obama can't retreat in the face of Republican bitching about an increase in the size of government -- he has to make the case that the number of government regulators has to grow in proportion to the amount of stuff produced, or else the government cannot do its job.

One would hope that President Obama's example of being a Christian who believes in global warming, evolution, etc., would rub off a bit in the Bible Belt.

Yes, I realize that's the same as saying the Care Bears will come down and show them the way.

Agreed with Kelly & Jelly -- if Obama believes in scientific rigor, then RFK Jr. has no place in any science-related position in the Obama Administration. The consideration of Kerry for Sec.State also worries me as a patronage, you-endorsed-me-here's-your-reward possibility. I think Obama is too concerned about correcting the image that he is inexperienced. Biden should have been enough to deal with that. Let's have an Administration with some newer names and regional diversity, and not the same ol' Boston Dems.
