Obama’s Grandmother Dies

Man, that’s awful.

Barack Obama says that his grandmother has died. The Democratic presidential candidate announced the news in a joint statement with his sister Maya Soetoro-Ng. He said his grandmother, Madelyn Dunham, had died peacefully after a battle with cancer.

He said: ‘She was the cornerstone of our family, and a woman of extraordinary accomplishment, strength, and humility. She was the person who encouraged and allowed us to take chances.’

This reminded me of Larry Johnson’s claim that Obama was only going to Hawaii to remind America of his white grandmother. What a douchebag.

  2. Sean D. Martin says:

Man. That does just suck. The only consolation I can think of is that she lived long enough to know what he has accomplished. Would have been nice if she could have made it thru tomorrow to see it official, but it is all but that.

(That said, don’t stop short of the finish line.)

  3. canadian bacon says:

While her death is a complete heartbreak, Obama’s accomplishments to date and his superior humanity have made her proud. GO OBAMA GO.

    Auwe Aloha O’e, Toot.

  5. Danton says:

She knew he was going to win. She couldn’t help but know. Maybe that’s all she needed to know.

  6. Parthenon says:

I wish she could have seen it through tomorrow. Almost perfect.

  7. Tim Fuller says:

Saw that over at Pam’s when I was fulfilling (better late than never Oliver) a promise to disseminate picture of my new custom car Mississippi car tags. I’m the guy who used to have the IMPEACH tag on my Mazda. I remember promising to share my new ones with you awhile back.

Pictures of my two vehicle custom car tags. These are not bumper stickers, easily removed after the election, should America shock and shame me by continuing a tortuous path through history by electing Grumpy Grampa and Bible Spice. I cannot abandon them in shame as easily as the old Kerry bumper stickers.

Unlike the purple stamp they brand you with at local bars (to show you’ve paid cover or have been carded), my license plates won’t fade in a few days like that ephemeral tattoo and the fuzzy memories possibly associated with the abundant intake of liquors of various colors and delight.

Don’t let me down here people!!! I don’t want to drive around for the next year with what amounts to LOSER on the bumpers of both my vehicles. Even if you don’t like Obama, you would still probably like me, and for that reason if no other, let’s straight ticket vote PROGRESSIVE.

I sure hope so, but it’s still very sad that she couldn’t quite hang on long enough to see it become official.

Rest in peace, Mrs. Dunham, and thank you for the gift you’ve left to our country.

  9. lib4 says:

    My condolences
Her spirit will carry him the rest of the way…..

Its pretty pathetic that somewhere in the RW blogsphere some idiot will question the timing of her passing and correlate it to tomorrow’s election. I hope they dont go there but there is no shame in today’s GOP.

Well, the Freepers already have, if that counts.

  11. Steve LaBonne says:

lib4, they’ve already gone there. For your peace of mind, stay away from the wingnut sites right now.

  12. Mylegacy says:

Obama will bear the pain of his grandmother’s death – just inches before he crosses the finish line – with grace and dignity. Like he bears all his challenges.

My heart goes out to her.

  13. Balakirev says:

She knew he was headed for the White House. That is enough. I’m sure she died proud of him, and happy.

  14. C.S.Strowbridge says:

Did I here this correctly? The GOP is filing a suit with the FEC against Obama because he used a campaign plane to visit his grandmother one last time.

If this is true, these inhuman bastards need to be wiped out at the ballot box tomorrow. Absolutely destroyed.

  15. mambochicken23 says:

I just read through the first 50 or so comments over there at Free Republic. Wow. You know, I thought that I couldn’t be surprised anymore by the wingnuts on the right. They really are a bunch of horrible, horrible people. I sincerely hope that the lake of fire that many of them believe in DOES exist, because that’s where they’re headed. As an atheist myself, I have to settle for the belief that their lives are miserable enough as punishment for the wretched, pathetic, downright mean-spirited things that are being said over there right now.

  16. Vanessa says:

    Rest In Peace, Mrs Dunham.

  17. Rheinhard says:

I’ll reiterate my comment from over at “Sadly, No!“:

Odds that O’Reilly and his “Internet Cops”, Wingnut Bimbo #1 or Wingnut Bimbo #2, will cover this in their “Policing the Net” segment?

And the odds that those odds are worse than the odds that the earth will be swallowed whole by a giant spacegoing billy goat?

  18. Jaim says:

She raised a hell of a statesman, and for that I’m grateful. He’s the man who is the best choice for our next president,.

What will make me more grateful? Doing everything you can to make sure people get out and vote.

  19. She raised a boy that aimed high and a man that fights fair. She had to have known about tomorrow, and that was good.

  20. Neal says:

Although she was quite old and was a cancer patient still the time she died was just one day before elections. This can lead to some sympathy vote for Obama too..

  21. juhar says:

May she rest in peace, having the privilege to vote by absentee ballot for her grandson whom she loved and help raise to become President of the United States.

Her vote was in and it has been counted.

I would like to know how Obama supporters could send in a personal gift to the Obama family to cover Obama’s $100,000 expense to visit his grandmother instead of fighting the despicable GOP.

Does anyone know how this can be done?

  22. PG says:

    C.S. Strowbridge,

Yes, you heard correctly and can read about the lawsuit in full on the California GOP’s website. They’re also claiming that the law firm Saul Ewing, by counting poll monitoring by their lawyers as pro bono work (i.e. spending the day protecting voters from suppression, fraud, etc. will be considered a work day rather than a vacation day), actually is making a contribution to the Obama campaign. Sadly, the GOP believes that having legal protection for voters means that the Democrats are getting an unfair advantage.
