The TPM report starts kind of lame. “First the Murdoch-owned Times of London reported Thursday that Obama’s aunt, Zeituni Onyango, is living in a Boston public-housing complex. It’s unclear how the paper learned of the woman’s presence in the U.S.”

It’s not unclear at all — like any basic researcher, they sat down and started running names of the people mentioned in Obama’s memoir through Lexis. The only result that pops up for Zeituni Onyango is the following:

CAMBRIDGE, Mass. (AP) – Zeituni Onyango is out of work and doesn’t have much money. But every now and then, she succumbs to temptation and buys a lottery ticket at the check-cashing store.

“It’s just like when I feel luck might fall I do that, like manna might come from heaven. That’s when I buy it,” the 49-year-old woman said recently after a visit to a check-cashing store in the Central Square neighborhood.

So there’s no mystery about how they found out she lives in the Boston area. What is very questionable, however, is the point at which the information about her immigration status was released.

That’s what I was thinking. Whose vote is this going to influence? It’s not as if they had any proof that Obama knew about it or was trying to cover it up. It’s pretty pathetic for a last minute “surprise” revelation. Hell, McCain has had worse stuff crop up almost every day recently.

If I were to illegally leak confidential info held by a government agency as part of an “October surprise” to bring down Obama, I’d like to think that I could do a lot better than “His father’s half-sister had her asylum application denied four years ago.” Really, this is all they’ve got?
