SNL Skewers Keith Olbermann & Countdown

That was quite simply one of the funniest skits of the year. Ben Affleck perfectly nailed K.O., especially during the Special Comment of Miss Kitty being denied by the co-op.

SIR, I DEMAND YOU RESIGN!

I like Keith but I laughed thru the whole skit. He had his mannerisms down.

It was funny but got a little on the long side.

He’s run a horribly damaging campaign, but McCain reminded me why I used to like him (though never probably enough to vote for him) in the open. That was hilarious and good natured. Overall though, big props to SNL for taking its game to another level for the fall election season. It is again must-see TV. That’s the only reason I’d like this campaign to go on a little longer…

Really? Have they lowered the bar that much? I thought it had a few funny moments, but suffered from the usual SNL sins of being way too long and overly surreal. The only way they seem to be able to skewer a public figure these days is to make him or her seem utterly insane (like McCain thinking “Joe the Plumber” lives in a cigar box under his bed). It just seems lazy to me; it lacks the precision that a good skewering needs. One reason Tina Fey as Palin has been so effective is that it’s NOT very exaggerated–it’s close enough to reality to really sting.

I did think the opening QVC thing was fairly funny, and I’ll even credit McCain — whose politics and recent conduct I find despicable — of turning in a good and good-natured performance. He’s probably a better actor than Affleck, though that isn’t saying much.

And as long as I’m griping about SNL, do they even write sketches for Kristin Wiig, or do they just settle on a goofy voice and a single annoying trait and tell her wing it for 10 minutes?

    link pls.

Man, I can’t belive this episode isn’t torrented anywhere. It took forever for the Jon Hamm one to come out, and now this. Shape up, TV cappers!

Heard Keith Crashed the rehearsal, and loved hte skit, too…

Nice to see a celeb who can take a skewering and understand the humour. Rest assured, Rushbo or baby-Hughie Hewitt don’t share that sensibility….

Was prepared to enjoy the sketch, but… this? Wotta dud. Lame writing, Affleck no mimic. Maybe it will make some viewers curious to find out who Olbermann is, otherwise no redeeming virtue at all.

  8. M Zaki says:

Affleck was hilarious and I’m sure Olbermann will love the sketch – I’ll be watching Countdown tonight to see his undoubtedly POSITIVE comments about Affleck.

Keith Olbermann is one of the few honest AND decent newsmen on TV. Sure he’s left wing, but we need ONE person to try and balance all the right wing nuts like Billo Reilly, Hannity, the two losers on Fox and Friends, Rupert Murdoch, pretty much everyone else on Fox, a lot of CNN…

When McCain made that racist comment against Arabs – after that nut job woman said Sen. Obama was “an Arab”, and Sen. McCain responded with “no he’s not, he’s a decent man”, ONLY Olbermann, Chris Matthews and the Daily Show had anything to say about it.

Olbermann; Matthews; and Maddow are the reason I watch MSNBC and when Billo Reilly insulted the son of a man who died in the WTC attack, that was when I stopped watching Fox and only see their racist/Zionist/Republican propaganda on YouTube once in a while.

Olbermann will be the next Howard K. Smith, Edward R. Murrow and Walter Cronkite.

Please, the only decent parts of the skit were hair and wardrobe.

  10. bryan says:

Olberdude strikes me as a good sport who can stand a little roasting. Affleck sounded more like Sam the American Eagle!

  11. Laura Roslin says:

OMG. Ben was great in that. After the first few minutes he had me in tears. Thanks so much for posting this. Keith does get a bit dramatic and this shows there is a formula for it. I am an Olbermann fan, but OMG this skit nailed it. Enjoyed Ben in this too. They need to make this a regular.

Remember some of the old great skits of SNL? Toots the Cat. That Liar guy?

    Do it again SNL!

  12. Parthenon says:

He got the KO frothing outrage, but what’s with the Shatnerian constantly pausing? KO seems to be speaking on his inbreaths sometimes so he doesn’t have to stop.

  13. thebewilderness says:

It’s hard to exaggerate someone whose persona dramatica is already a bit of a caricature. Have you ever watched Keith Outragemann during one of his rants, about Senator Clinton or Governor Palin, with the sound off?
I thought Affleck, and the writers, did an excellent job.

  14. Max Udargo says:

“A tyranny up with which we dare no longer put!”

Perfect Olby parody. I love Olbermann, and he can be quite moving and powerful when there’s an actual outrage that matches up to his histrionics, but even when the outrage is not so outrageous, he always takes the histrionics to 11 anyway.
