Mike, you’re right. New Zealand butters/cheeses are lovely. We have lots of them in the UK/ (also lamb).
Wallace, I even lived near there a few years back, yet I still add that extra ‘d’.

on a somewhat related note, i have discovered that the buttermilk donut at dunkin’s donuts has been discontinued, at least in the chicago area. i was told this by a worker at both of the locations i frequent (there are at least 6 stores within 2 blocks of my office in the loop). a co-worker didn’t believe me and went to a third, much larger store, where he thought presumably they would still have it, but alas, no buttermilk donuts. this is a great tragedy and a petition needs to be started immediately to bring them back!

Swiss? I was under the impression that the un-dyed cheese at Subway was simply called “swiss” to distinguish it from the orange-dyed cheese. It never tasted like actual swiss cheese to me.

Then I got home and found that David Tennant is leaving Doctor Who.

Couldn’t tell you why Subway isn’t selling Swiss but my guess would be cost. Swiss is expensive for some reason, you’d think it would be cheap with all the holes in it. I just bought a 1/2 pound of the stuff for some soup I’m making and it was 2.5x pricier than the same brand cheddar.

I used to work at a Subway maybe 15 years ago. At that time, they had yellow American and white American. That was it. Since then, I think people have come to expect more from a wich shop. Competition is a good thing. Speaking of wiches and competition, I now fully support Which Wich for president of sandwiches.

It’s interesting, one of the things that I miss about America is the ready availability and low price of cheese. Here in New Zealand dairy prices went up steeply during the last two years. On top of that cheeses like mozzarella and particularly provolone are rare and much more expensive, maybe because we don’t have a large Italian immigrant population. Pepper jack doesn’t even exist here.

BUT! New Zealand dairy products are delicious! If you ever have a chance to have a bit of New Zealand butter it has a beautiful flavor. And some of our regular cheeses taste much better then some fancy American ones.
