I’ve seen some folks on the left say that they hope to see Ashley Todd, the race-baiting fabulist volunteer for the McCain campaign, seek mental help. Excuse me? She knew what she was doing. She’s done what College Republicans have often done – like affirmative action bake sales – they provoke racial discord in order to further the Republican cause.
Its no coincidence that this knuckle dragging moron went into the same well as baby killer Susan Smith by claiming that a black man was the provocateur.
She knew just what she was doing and a large part of the conservative movement was more than willing to shovel her excrement for her.

John McCain’s Pennsylvania communications director told reporters in the state an incendiary version of the hoax story about the attack on a McCain volunteer well before the facts of the case were known or established — and even told reporters outright that the “B” carved into the victim’s cheek stood for “Barack,” according to multiple sources familiar with the discussions.
John Verrilli, the news director for KDKA in Pittsburgh, told TPM Election Central that McCain’s Pennsylvania campaign communications director gave one of his reporters a detailed version of the attack that included a claim that the alleged attacker said, “You’re with the McCain campaign? I’m going to teach you a lesson.”
Verrilli also told TPM that the McCain spokesperson had claimed that the “B” stood for Barack. According to Verrilli, the spokesperson also told KDKA that Sarah Palin had called the victim of the alleged attack, who has since admitted the story was a hoax.
The KDKA reporter had called McCain’s campaign office for details after seeing the story — sans details — teased on Drudge.

Well I’m no psychologist, but I do know that ‘knowing what she was doing’ is not necessarily an indication of sound mental health. It’s kind of a fuzzy area, what many would dismiss as soft science. Some would say ’stop being an ass’ while others would say ‘let’s talk about and work through your issues.’ I suppose I can see both sides.

That it was so poorly planned, to where she couldn’t even get the “B” facing the right way to match her story, suggests that either something is wrong in her head or that this was orchestrated from the highest levels of the McCain campaign.
I thought the folks at TNR made a good point: she reminds them of Mayella Ewell from “To Kill a Mockingbird.” Yes, she’s being careless of others’ lives — specifically, black men’s lives. But she also seems to be a very unfortunate person who either was covering up for real abuse she has suffered, or is so mentally unbalanced that she was cutting herself and not knowing why. Since this time the white woman’s lies about a black man haven’t hurt anyone except herself, I think we can afford a little pity.

I have been told that for true sociopaths, therapy actually makes them worse. They get a chance to try out all their cons on someone who, on average, is almost but not quite as smart as they are. In other words, therapy is not a hospital or a reformatory but a gym for these folks. Now this woman may or may not be a sociopath. I don’t know. But she acted with radical disregard for the truth.

She is definitely emotionally disturbed. I’ve known women who have hurt themselves in this same kind of manner. She has an emotional/mental health issue. That doesn’t mean she did not know what she was doing. She did. It just means she has issues such that she didn’t have anything to go off in her brain that said “what the heck are you doing”. Charge her and send her off to a shrink.

I don’t think she’s mentally ill in any psychiatric way. She has issues that she needs to work out and a therapist would help there, but she is not mentally ill. Her actions had too much forethought put into them.

Like Jack H., I’m waiting until a psychiatric evaluation before showing any pity for this woman. Remember she did not “cut herself” or suffer any sort of black eye. The wounds were superficial and perhaps in her mind were worth the effort to try and foment hatred against Obama. I doubt she cared if any reprisals were done in her name, either.
