McCain Volunteer Ashley Todd Made Up Her Story Of Attack

Shame. Shame. Shame.

Police sources tell KDKA that a campaign worker has now confessed to making up a story that a mugger attacked her and cut the letter ‘B’ in her face after seeing her McCain bumper sticker.

Ashley Todd, 20, of Texas, initially told police that she was robbed at an ATM in Bloomfield and that the suspect became enraged and started beating her after seeing her GOP sticker on her car.

Police investigating the alleged attack, however, began to notice some inconsistencies in her story and administered a polygraph test.

Authorities, however, declined to release the results of that test.

Investigators did say that they received photos from the ATM machine and ‘the photographs were verified as not being the victim making the transaction.’

This afternoon, a Pittsburgh police commander told KDKA Investigator Marty Griffin that Todd confessed to making up the story.

Almost as desperate as the McCain campaign.

    …of Texas…

    Sigh

  2. SpiderJ says:

She should be very satisfied. Like a number of other thoroughly debunked accusations about Obama and his supporters, I’m sure this outright fabrication will live on as “the truth the LIBERAL MSM doesn’t want you to know!!!” in the hearts and minds of the twentysome-percenters.

Whoa! Knock me over with a feather! Who among us could have possibly seen that coming?

  4. ed says:

Classy bunch, those Republican operatives are. Pure class.

The McSlime campaign needs to be made to pay a heavy price for its despicable efforts to push this “story”.

Jay Tea yesterday in the threads:

The left-wing blogs haven’t had enough time to give this woman’s entire life the kind of scrutiny that Joe The Plumber got for asking his questions. I’m sure we’ll soon know her credit history, job history, sexual history, and anything else that will discredit her — AND avoid talking about the climate that probably provoked this woman’s attack and maiming.

Right. Jay Tea, can we now talk about the climate that would provoke a McCain supporter to make up a story about a black assailant just a few weeks before the election? You wanna comment on the climate that might have contributed to this insanity?

Better yet, would you care to comment on your own blog’s contribution to this climate? From Jay Tea’s fellow wizbangers yesterday:

Kim Priestap: Is this the new strategy to get Obama elected? Vote Obama or we’ll riot, mutilate people and destroy property? Keep in mind, community activists used intimidation to get banks to give home loans to minority and high risk customers. They stormed bank lobbies and scared away customers. They harassed bank presidents at their homes. It seems they’re willing to go even further and actually mutilate a McCain supporter. Will voters with McCain signs in their front yards be targeted, too?

Lorie Byrd: If the media is fair about it, this story will get a lot more attention than some idiot who may or may not have yelled “Kill Him” at a McCain rally. Any media report that does not include Obama’s instructions for his supporters to “get in their faces” will be incomplete and do a disservice to news consumers by not giving them the full story.

And here’s Lorie Byrd this morning clearly having learned her lesson about believing everything you read on the internets:

A friend of mine here in NC emailed this to me. She does not know the author of the email personally, but knows someone who does …

“I received a phone call from one of my three sons this morning. He had been talking to a republican that was a member of the local board of elections … He had stated that bus loads of mentally retarded and severely handicapped patients from a state funded facility called The Caswell Center were being transported to the voting location and that their democratic state employee aids were voting for them.”

So a friend of a friend sent out an email about a third party account of what yet another person removed supposedly witnessed at a polling place and Lorie felt it was suitable to publish.

Jay Tea, you were also talking about lowered standards in the other thread about this. Would you care to explain the journalistic standards of your colleagues and the blog you contribute to?

Would you care discuss any possible correlation between wizbang’s unassailable journalistic ethics and the creation of the climate that would provoke a woman to make up a story about a violent black Obama supporter?

  7. Leota2 says:

This criminal young woman needs to be charged and made
to do years of community service helping victims of rape and hate crimes–
as she just perpetuated a hate crime herself.

Did she not understand the highly volatile climate in this nation during this campaign? Anything might have happened. But that’s probably what she wanted . . . .

    Remember Boston and Charles Stuart?

  8. ed says:

Classy bunch you run with there Jay Tea.

  9. jojo says:

Well I think we have this year’s tasteless Halloween costume.

  10. Michael says:

She is getting charged by the Police. I do think she needs to have some mental evaluations done. I stayed away from the PUMA sites because I felt they would just be infected with hate last night, just like the hoax about Michele in NY. I know they are nursing their wounds right now but will never say they were wrong either. I am waiting to see what response comes out of the McCain/Palin camp regarding the attempt to incite race baiting by a volunteer.

  11. bopst says:

Man, how low will Republicans go? I hope this hoax is as low as McCain supporters will go, but I ain’t holding my breath.

  12. Duros Hussein 62 says:

    Drama Queen.

Still waiting for the Obama campaign to condemn this hate crime, and dial back on the “get in their faces” rhetoric…

    You were saying, Jay T?

  13. Quaker in a Basement says:

Lorie Byrd: If the media is fair about it, this story will get a lot more attention than some idiot who may or may not have yelled “Kill Him” at a McCain rally.

Good news for Lorie! She’s getting just what she hoped for!!

  14. Parthenon says:

Well good. We’ve gone from a fake disturbed individual to a real disturbed individual. At least we know who it is.

I’m sure we all agree that as the fake crime would not have reflected badly on the Obama campaign, this nutter doesn’t reflect badly on the McCain campaign. It’s not as if the GOP needs the help.

  15. C.S.Strowbridge says:

I doubt there’s a 10% chance Jay Tea will comment on this story. Hopefully there’s a 90% chance Jay Tea will never comment on anything every again. He’s just too dumb to type.

Of course, when you say WE you must not be including jackasses such as Jay Tea and his colleagues in stupidity over at Wizbang.

    Jay Tea wrote here yesterday:

I can think of two elements here that make me suspicious of the story right off the bat, but I’m going to withhold casting any doubt on it publicly until I see how things play out. I’m more interested in seeing how the Obama supporters and the campaign handle it at this point.

It didn’t really matter to Jay Tea whether the story was real or fake. He was more interested in how Obama supporters and the campaign would handle it. So how did theyhandle it?

The Obama campaign immediately issued a statement condemning the attack and wishing the victim a speedy recovery. Taking the response of Obama supporters at OW, including OW himself, as an example, I saw a lot of responses showing support for the alleged victim measured with a degree of respectful skepticism until more evidence was revealed.

How did Jay Tea and his colleagues at wizbang fare int their reactions?

Their immediate response was to blame the Obama campaign and its supporters before most people even knew anything about the story.

Jay Tea demanded that Obama apologize for his “get in their faces” remark while Kim and Lorie at wizbang described it as the beginning of an orchestrated campaign of political terror in which blacks, with the media as their willing accomplices would “riot, mutilate people and destroy property” to get Obama elected.

I don’t think Todd’s decision to pull this hoax reflects on the McCain campaign, but the right wing blogosphere’s general response to it says a lot about who they are and what they believe.

I’m sure Jay Tea will be along to explain exactly what it says shortly.

  20. Duros Hussein 62 says:

    Mr. T, where are you?

We eagerly await your “dialing it down.”

BTW, , this is what they’ve reduced themselves to.

    Sad, really sad.

  21. Parthenon says:

In JT’s defense, I believe I read at his site that today is his birthday, and so you may see a delay before he joins us with his commentary. And Faf, regarding the conservative reaction, they’re down and they’re getting desperate. There could have been a sense or hope that this was the ‘tear in the eye’ moment that got Sen. Clinton back into it during the primaries. Just a guess. We can surely expect to see some truly silly (and probably fairly repugnant) hail maries over the next two weeks.

  22. fafaroo says:

“And Faf, regarding the conservative reaction, they’re down and they’re getting desperate.”

Quite frankly, my real beef here is just with Jay Tea and the wizbang idiots. Where normally unhinged conservatives like Michelle Malkin managed to hold it together, Jay tea and his wizbang cohorts were off and running with the Obama smears as soon as the story came out.

Jay Tea, however, went a step further to predict how the left would react — smearing Todd’s character and digging into her private life — while his own freaking blog was busily engaged in the worst sort of race baiting.

Of course it was also Malkin, along Wonketter and some others, who started linking to Todd’s tweeter feed, her facebook and myspace accounts and those of her young republican friends. Not “the left”.

I don’t think most of us needed any more evidence that Jay tea was a spectacular hack but this instance just really drove the point home. The guy is a disgrace.

  23. fafaroo says:

“In JT’s defense, I believe I read at his site that today is his birthday …”

    No cake for Jay Tea.

  24. Duros Hussein 62 says:

“In JT’s defense, I believe I read at his site that today is his birthday, and so you may see a delay before he joins us with his commentary.”

Well, ok then. Happy Birthday, ya big jerk.

  25. Nimrod Gently says:

This has actually shocked me. She beat herself up and carved the letter B into her own face to get John McCain elected?

  26. j mccann says:

I wish they had video of her punching herself.

    That would be funny.

  27. C.S.Strowbridge says:

“We can surely expect to see some truly silly (and probably fairly repugnant) hail maries over the next two weeks.”

It’s going to get ugly. I just hope it doesn’t get violent. … Or at least the next attack isn’t self-inflicted. I have no time to feel sorry for someone who beats themself up and tries to blame a black man for political gain.

  28. fafaroo says:

    “That would be funny.”

yeah. Hilarious. It’s also really funny coming from someone who posted this on her blog:

My gut tells me she’s not making it up, but I could be wrong.”

Never has a more Colbertian line been written. Yes, J., you could be wrong, as wrong as the guy you linked in the same post. You wrote:

Jimmie at Sundries Shack counters the skeptics on the likelihood that this assault (beyond the mugging, which does not seem to be in question) occurred.

    And Jimmie wrote:

I’m going to provide the counterbalance here. They’re skeptical. I’m not. Quite frankly, I’m tired of giving the left the benefit of the doubt when it comes to political violence.

    Awesome, J. Just awesome.

    You also wrote yesterday:

The Anchoress is right: real or fake—neither bodes well for our country’s political future.

Okay. So now that we know a mentally unbalanced McCain campaign volunteer made up an explosive story about being attacked by a black Obama supporter, please tell us what this bodes for our political future.

  29. PG says:

The NewsBusters coverage, which faulted the AP story for not mentioning that the phantom attacker was a big dark black guy, will be my favorite artifact of this sad episode.

I wish I could believe it was just happenstance and not racism that makes white women who want to completely fabricate stories about crime always invoke the BIG BLACK criminal. Susan Smith had one killing her kids; now Todd has one inflicting her injuries.

  30. fafaroo says:

Jesus. I missed this from your post yesterday, Mccann:

I happen to believe this young woman, because very few 20-somethings risk scarring their faces just to smear a political opponent. Especially women.

I wish they had video of you typing this.

    That would be pathetic.

  31. thebewilderness says:

I would be interested to know who beat her up or if her injuries were self inflicted.
The reason I wonder is that she seems to be saying she does not know how the mark was made on her face.
I suspect the possibility of an abusive boyfriend.

  32. Duros Hussein 62 says:

Water Tiger pointed out that the bruises do not appear to be fresh. I’m thinking she made this whole thing up to cover for something or someone else, and like most lies, it spiraled out of control.

But I share your suspicion, bewilderness.

  33. Jaim says:

Republicans have no shame. But plenty of desperation these days.

  34. Scott Mercer says:

    I!!! KNEW!!!! IT!!!!

When I first heard this story, before I had even seen a picture of this sociopath, I smelled a rat. When I heard about the letter “B” on her face, I said, “Gee, how much you wanna bet it’s backwards on her face, because she drew it herself while looking in a mirror?”

Same stupid hoax when Morton Downey Jr. drew the swastika backwards on his face and claimed he was attacked by neo Nazis in an airport bathroom.

Okay, that was over 15 years ago, so, kids, if you don’t remember who Morton Downey Jr. was, or you were in kindygarden at that time, please Google him or search for some of his clips on You Tube. You’ll be glad you did.

Anyway, I have no pity for this turd. Prosecute her fully. And I personally intend to keep clubbing Republithugs over the head with this shameful episode from now until Doomsday. When they get exasperated at being called Racists, just bring up this piece of vermin…stoking a potential lynch mob for the sake of few votes. These are the type of people that vote Republican.
