I mean, who saw this coming??? Heh.
Mr. Obama has met challenge after challenge, growing as a leader and putting real flesh on his early promises of hope and change. He has shown a cool head and sound judgment. We believe he has the will and the ability to forge the broad political consensus that is essential to finding solutions to this nation’s problems.
In the same time, Senator John McCain of Arizona has retreated farther and farther to the fringe of American politics, running a campaign on partisan division, class warfare and even hints of racism. His policies and worldview are mired in the past. His choice of a running mate so evidently unfit for the office was a final act of opportunism and bad judgment that eclipsed the accomplishments of 26 years in Congress.
Given the particularly ugly nature of Mr. McCain’s campaign, the urge to choose on the basis of raw emotion is strong. But there is a greater value in looking closely at the facts of life in America today and at the prescriptions the candidates offer. The differences are profound.

I’m one proud American.
This election America is going to elect the best man for President. The best man to fix America and the best man to repair America’s reputation abroad. America’s about to elect the best man to set America on a successful path for the next generation. The best man – who happens to be black – here in America, MY real America. Priceless.
An election four hundred years in the making. I’m so proud of my country – IF I was black I think I’d near explode. What the heck – I might just do it anyway!
OW, are you implying that Obama/Democrats are Bane, and McCain/GOP are Batman?
Off the top of my head, I’d see McCain more as the Green Goblin being impaled by his own Goblin Glider in Amazing Spider-Man #122.
But of course, I’m a recovering Marvel zombie, and you’re a DC fan…
Obviously, this is only happening because The New York Times is a black man.
billo will need some Pampers to deal with this
Fox News has a fecal hemmorrage in 3..2..1…
No surprise, but lest we forget, the NYT actually pays real money to republican apparatchiks like David Brooks and Bill Kristol.
“Obviously, this is only happening because The New York Times is a black man.”
FTW.
Well done endorsement, if nothing else. Anybody know of a major editor that has endorsed Sen. McCain?
I think the Dallas Morning News is the largest paper by circulation to endorse McCain so far. Though, I imagine McCain will receive as many endorsements from major newspapers as Obama does from Small Business Associations. They’re preaching to two completely different choirs.
The Timid Gray Lady finally commits, having initially endorsed TWO opposing candidates during the primaries, Hillary and McCain, God forbid any advertisers or political parties feel left out.
I can remember when the Times endorsed AHEAD OF the Washington Post, the LA Times, the Chicago Trib, etc., ie, was a leader.
SaveFarris: They’re preaching to two completely different choirs.
Got that right. Obama’s preaching to Americans, and McCain’s preaching to the racist, elitist fringe.
I can remember when the Times endorsed AHEAD OF the Washington Post, the LA Times, the Chicago Trib, etc., ie, was a leader.
Seriously. Nothing like jumping on the bandwagon. I’ve got far more respect for those people/newspapers/organizations that made endorsements long ago than for any of those who are finally saying something when there’s only a couple of weeks to go.
Sean: amen.
Speaking of endorsements, I liked Jonathan Alter on Colbert last night. Mentioning O.W. Holmes’ assessment of Alter’s biographical subject, Holmes said F.D.R. had a “second-rate intellect but a first-rate temperament.” Alter pointed out that Obama went one better with a “first-rate intellect AND a first-rate temperament.”
A lot in a few words.
In related news, S&P downgraded the New York Times to junk status (from BBB- to BB-).
Birds of a feather and all that…
