They are definitely not stupid. I heard about this story on CNN earlier today actually and they said it was announced on Al Jazeera that Al Qaeda supports McCain because he'll keep fighting the war and bankrupting the country on it as long as he deems necessary. They recognize that they cannot fight a pitched battle so they intermittently attack in hopes of getting us to spend more. It is not like this policy was a mystery. Osama wrote about it and has executed it since 2001. We have been ruled by idiots who thought they could "win" in this environment and still believe that we can "win." As long as we have bed-wetters here in the U.S. who still believe this, we are going to suffer. Al Qaeda is not stupid.
