Sarah Palin’s $150,000 Wardrobe

palinMcCain supporters won’t like seeing this at the same time they’re pulling out of swing states. Couldn’t they have used that money in Michigan? Sheesh!

The Republican National Committee appears to have spent more than $150,000 to clothe and accessorize vice presidential candidate Sarah Palin and her family since her surprise pick by John McCain in late August.

According to financial disclosure records, the accessorizing began in early September and included bills from Saks Fifth Avenue in St. Louis and New York for a combined $49,425.74.

The records also document a couple of big-time shopping trips to Neiman Marcus in Minneapolis, including one $75,062.63 spree in early September.

  • She can’t even dress herself?

  • Perfectly within reason. Every campaign has a wardrobe budget. Michelle has been fly head to toe the entire campaign. Michelle has people shopping for and dressing her as well in designer duds…don’t be mistaken. I don’t see what the big deal is.

  • Goodness! That’s even worse that a non-existent lobster/caviar lunch!

  • Enlightened Liberal

    Elitist !@!11!!!!

  • Wow that’s almost as bad as dragging her family to all those fancy speaking engagements at Alaska taxpayer expense. She obviously has a sense of entitlement to spend other people’s money on perks for herself and her family that belies the mavericky narrative that was crafted to describe her.

  • Yeah, but, but… Democrats get $400 haircuts!!!

Remember when that story was all over the news? Anyone think this story will get similar airplay?

It is still OK if you are a Republican.

  • Hey, didn’t you know? Real Americans in small towns where people love America, like Joe Six-Pack, often drop a undred and fifty grand on couture.

  • Oh puhleeze! What’s the big deal? That’s like buying an outfit from a garage sale…at John McCain’s house (well, Cindy’s anyways).

  • Quaker in a Basement

Well, we can add one more entry on the list of Reasons Why I’ll Never Be President…I hate to shop!

  • David Shuster and Chris Matthews attacked Obama for ordering orange juice at a diner…

  • She should get some credit for not billing the state of Alaska for her wardrobe.

  • It is a big deal in the respect that it flies in the face of her
claim of fiscal responsibility. The republicans are crying about their lack of funds to campaign in states they really need to cover,
yet they arrogantly justify the expenditures with “we do not discuss
our expenditures”. Ok fine then don’t cry about having less to
    spend.

Do your homework, In the Obama campaign there have been no such
excessive expenditures. No hairdresser, trips to Neiman Marcus.
The only reason this is important is because the walk doesn’t match
the talk. The message it sends is once again a show of a lack of
fiscal responsibility. Clearly they are neither in touch with the pulse of Americans. Does anyone think for one minute that the
excesses seen here are going to end if these two ended up in the
    White House?

And anyone who thinks these clothes will be auctioned off after
the campaign is being fooled AGAIN. Whoever John McCain is, he is
not a man in possession of good, clear judgement. He will forever be
remembered as the man who brought the GOP down with his reckless
decisions of which Sarah Palin is only one.

  • Isn’t the Republican National Committee putting Joe the Plumber in an awkward position: How is he supposed to compete against this when he buys his girlfriend a Christmas present?

  • I was reading just today about how the post-reconstruction southern Bourbons railed against northern ‘elite’ bankers and railroad financiers, all the while cozying up to said bankers and financiers, accepting positions on their boards of directors and using their experience in the confederate army to pander for votes, all the while claiming not to be elites.

The people bought it then too.

  • Yeah, well Michell Obama spent almost $150 dollars on a single dress.

What that was her own money as opposed to other people’s donations? That just makes her even more socialist.

  • Ambra, last I checked Michelle Obama isn’t on the ballet. And frankly I don’t give a shit how she is spending her own money – and from anything I’ve seen it hasn’t been nearly as extravagant anyway.

What I do give a shit is that somehow 150,000 of donation money to a political campaign has been dropped on clothes. My dad, who works on construction sites, pulls 25,000 a year. That’s 6 years of his work.

Now, he’s been an obama supporter, but people he works with are not – and they’re donating their hard earned money to a campaign (that I don’t believe in) and frankly, it pisses me off that anyone should be subject to this bullshit.

I guess it could be seen as a metaphor for the way most of the policies have been going from that party, but it’s still flat out unbelievable.

  • Really? No one noted just how hideous that leather blouse (?) she’s wearing was? Just awful. Pantsuits are just a bit better.

  • Hockey mom goes to town! See this great cartoon at the Reasons To Be Cheerful, Part 3 blog…

  • Demonstrates that you can dress a stinking pile of dog shit in expensive clothes, but at the end of the day it’s still a stinking pile of dog shit.

  • Hey. Dog shit is a very inappropriate term that just showcases ignorance. Try caribou droppings next time. Or maybe moose turds.

  • So she has a makeup chick with her every day, which works out to 157 bucks a day, which is far less than a make up chick’s day rate on a TV commercial shoot. So the make up thing is irrelevant.

But absolutely have at it on the clothing thing. That’s an amazing way to show she’s out of touch.

  • At least the clothes will still be wearable on November 5th. Spending money on campaigning at this point would be like flushing cash down the toilet.

  • Although I am an Obama supporter, I really see this as a non-story. I would have 3 concerns however if I was a McCain supporter.

This shatters the “Hockey Mom” myth about small town, non-elitist values. A good pair of CCM hockey skates can cost $400, and I’m sure many families who have a hockey player in the family are struggling to justify that expense.

Secondly, if I had made a contribution to the McCain campaign, I would be really angry if it was being spent this way.

Finally, I would be very interested in knowing about the legalities of using contributions like this, even if they are to be given to charity later.

  • “Or maybe moose turds.”

    I vote for Moose Turds.

  • Quaker in a Basement

    I vote for Moose Turds.

    Grey Poopon MooseTurd?

  • Going back to the $400 haircut for a moment, as far as I know, Edwards didn’t use donors’ money to pay for it. Somebody correct me if I’m wrong.

  • There’s no disputing Sarah Palin looks terrific. But when so many people are hurting economically, the $150,000 she frivolously spent at high end retail outlets sends the wrong message. How can she say she advocates for average Joes and Josephines when her *clothing* budget is more than most of us make in a year! We all need to spend within our means. The issues facing this nation are too important to relegate to staged media events, a provocative wink of the eye, slick clothes and scare tactics. It’s the Obama-Biden economic plan that can help our senior citizens, middle American families – and our college-bound children! Vote for your family’s interests, vote Obama-Biden.

  • Does anybody knows how much are the suits wore by the other 3 men in this contest? Why are her clothes more important than Joe’s tie or shoes? Are we been sexist?

  • Future donations to Good Will or not, 150K seems pretty steep for clothing. A St. John suit should only run around a thousand bucks, so did she buy 150 of those fugly suckers? Last I counted, there were only seven days in a week, so seven suits should do, especially when you run away from the media rather than dress to confront it.

  • Okay, just reread that…..49k on accessories….all she ever wears are her wedding rings, glasses and shoes….49k is a lot to spend when you don’t get any bling. WTF?

  • Just imagine if McCain wins, then dies within the first year and we’re stuck with her. I’d love to see how much of our tax dollars are gonna go to her wardrobe then. She’s got nerve to say that Obama is out of touch. I think it would be safe to say that probably 80% of the clothes wont ever make it to charity anyway.

  • You know what, you people should go right ahead and keep bashing Sarah Palin and the Republicans for 150k worth of expenditures. There is no way the democrats have ever spent that amount of money. Are any of you going to pull up any stats on the democratic expenditures or are you just going to continue to snowball this Palin thing……Just like you snowball anything the media says…. come on people, use your heads. Start thinking for yourselves and realize that big government isn’t what we need. We need to empower the people to work for what they want, empower local governements to mandate their own laws and allow the people to democraticly operate their own small pieces of the pie. We don’t need to passify this country any longer. Seriously, do you really think that mandating large corporate taxes is going to solidify this economy? No, these companies are going to pass it on to the consumer. Rich consumers will be fine, because they can handle the increased costs. Poor consumers will suffer, because the can not handle the increased costs. So get your ass off the couch and get to work if you want to eat or if you need those 20 inch rims while you are living in a torn down shack. Don’t open your hand for a government handout.

  • Ambra,

The big deal is that Michelle Obama pays for it herself.

  • Honestly, couldn’t she just wear Cindy’s hand-me-downs? She won’t need them after November 4th, anyway.

  • This is the woman who supposedly feels our pain? Is just like us? I mean, just how stupid can this campaign get?

You take a girl from the boondocks who is supposed to be little Miss Main Street, and you make her up to look like Jackie O?

    If I were a donor, I’d want a refund!

  • They should have spent $150,000 on tutoring instead of a new wardrobe. Because nothing says “I’m not part of the Washington elite” like a $75,000 Neiman Marcus shopping spree.

She may look cute, but she sounds stupid. With 2 weeks to go, I guess it’s easier to make her over than to smarten her up.

  • I’m sure Palin did not have proper “election” clothes to throw together in a suitcase and speed to Ohio when John McCain called. Of course she had to look good to the general public when she was announced then nominated. I’d like to know how much Barack Obama has spent on his wardrobe…but we won’t hear about that, will we?

  • Obama supporters who trashed Palin from day one are ranting about her wardrobe and other petty matters, while an anti-American Socialist / Marxist racist is about to highjack our government, with the help of voter fraud, and a corrupt biased media. You’d better wake up America … or, this country is about to experience an ugly 4 year long nightmare under Obama/Biden !!!

  • Oh yeah because the last 8 years have been a wondrous dream full of starlight and puppies SHUT UP.

  • Did Reblicans pay the hotel bills for Palins children and Boyfriend
also the plane fare. I didnot think it was nesesary for all of them to travel with her. by the way when is the wedding or is boyfriend off the hook since they are not moving into the
    Whitehouse?
