Like Rush, con talker Mike Gallagher can’t conceive of any reason other than race why Colin Powell would endorse Obama.
If only Powell had spent 7 minutes explaining in detail his reasoning and to give specific examples for why he views each candidate as he does instead of just saying over and over again how he’s looking forward to getting a brother into the White House.
Such a shame.
I can think of a reason other than race, and I’m nowhere near as bright or influential as Gen. Powell: Obama selected a running mate who could actually lead this country in case of emergency.
If for no other reason, “Old Navy”’s judgement is suspect.
Neither can Colin Powell.
Wait, I take that back. He did praise Obama for his “rhetorical abilities”, which is code for “articulate”. And we ALL know what that’s code for…
SF,
Still waiting to hear the list of Republicans that Lieberman endorsed when the Democratic candidate wasn’t going to be black or female.
I extend the same courtesy to Lieberman that I do to Powell. I don’t think Lieberman endorsed the Republican candidate because of a preference for a white male candidate, and I don’t think Powell endorsed the Democratic candidate because of a preference for a black candidate. Lieberman endorsed McCain because Lieberman considered “Islamic extremism” to be the overriding issue for this election. Similarly, Powell evidently thinks that the economy is an important issue for this election and that McCain has not shown much judgment on it (wanting to cap executive pay to $400k by law? saying Congress should institute binding shareholder votes on how much corporations should spend on R&D? describing a return to Clinton-era tax rates as “socialist”?).
It’s a pity that when a black moderate Republican endorses a black Democrat, Republicans assume racism; but when a white moderate Democrat endorses a white Republican, Republicans don’t think twice about it. Of COURSE you endorse the white man on the merits, but the black man because of race.
“Neither can Colin Powell.”
Ferris is either intensely stupid or a liar. Powell laid out many, many reasons to support Obama, not one of them having to do with race.
The plus-side to all of this is that the racist, ignorant tunnel vision of people like Ferris is going to pay off with a shellacking and wholesale rejection of Republicanism at the polls in November.
We should thank Rush, all the mini-Rushes (Gallagher, Hannity etc. ), and our own hometown Limbots like saveFarris for demonstrating how deeply ingrained racist thinking is among the wingnut sect.
Powell goes into great detail as to why he thinks Obama is more qualified than McCain: not only his “articulateness” but his ability to unify people of all backgrounds, his intelligence, his thoughtfulness, his steadiness, his judgment (displayed in such defining moments as his vice-presidential choice and his response to the economic meltdown, which looks awfully good next to McCain’s erratic shoot-from-the-lip lunacy and his disturbingly foolish choice of Palin.
But all our beloved wingnut brethren hear is one black man endorsing another black man, and it’s “oh noes, they’re ganging up on us! halp!”
Ferris is either intensely stupid or a liar.
There is one other possibility: SaveFarris can read the minds of black people. That’s the only other plausible explanation.
Please, SF, I beg of you, use your powers for good. Whoops–too late.
(Also, what’s the deal with Al Roker?)
advertisers need to be held responsible for keeping these bigots on the air
Endorsements are really only treated seriously when they’re for your side. Otherwise, one will find an excuse to nullify their importance. The excuse for this one, fortunately for the rest of us, reveals more about the would-be nullifiers than they intended, I’m sure.

Next week on Heroes…
Praising Obama vs. McCain for the bailout shennanigans is lame. McCain, while the “everything against the wall and we’ll see what sticks” criticism is accurate, he was at least DOING something. Obama treated the crisis as no different than an appropriations vote on renaming a middle school. Calm and collected: sure. Engaged and Leading? Not quite.
The rest of Powell’s endorsement is nothing but changeiness and hopeitude with narry a substantive issue to be found. Even the Supreme Court jab, Powell couldn’t name an issue where McCain-nominated justices would swing a balance. (Like Obama, he can’t. Because when Obama is asked about which Justices he prefers, he names Breyer and Ginsberg. And when he is asked about Court cases (like the DC gun ban, Kelo, or the Death Penalty for Child Rape), Obama consistently sides AGAINST how Breyer and Ginsberg ruled in those cases).
Rush LimpBall is a racEst fuck?
Who would have guessed?
Obama treated the crisis as no different than an appropriations vote on renaming a middle school. Calm and collected: sure. Engaged and Leading? Not quite.
Were you there? No? STFU.
“McCain was at least DOING something.”
And when confronted with what actions to take after 9/11, George Bush chose to urge Americans to go shopping, then invaded Iraq. How’d that work out?
Sometimes doing something, ANYTHING, for the sake of action itself, is somewhat unwise. As my little recap shows.
Only an idiot confuses “taking action” with “taking appropriate action.” An idiot, or a confused old codger.
Do you need to have an appropriations vote to re-name a middle school?
Were you there?
Was Barack? Nope, he was out campaigning and fund raising. So I guess he has to STFU too, right? I mean, if you’re being intellectually honest…
Bruce,
Depends on the name. If it’s Joe Smith, probably not. But if it’s Jared Saltalamachia, TJ Houshmandzadeh, or George Herbert Walker Syndey Hussein O’Donnell “Quatro Uno” Bush … I mean, the money for all those signs and nameplates has to come from somewhere!
I hope this doesn’t mean that I’m supposed to vote for McCain because he’s white and I am too. Because that just ain’t gonna happen. Colin Powell can endorse whoever he chooses to for whatever reason he chooses to. Just like everyone else in the country. And you don’t see other people getting attacked for it. If Powell did, and I’m not even suggesting that he did, endorse Obama because of the color of his skin then so what? How many people are supporting McCain because they are scared of the idea of a black man in power? And that’s NOT racist? The GOP is the most overtly racist group of good ol’ boys and girls that its almost laughable that they try to play the race card.

Here’s the problem with wingnuts. They’re stupid. They’re obtuse. And they take their idiotic worldview and substitute it for reality as if there is no difference.
Sure, McCain was erratic, flip-flopping from one campaign stunt to another, but he was doing something. Obama was simply making phone calls and engaging his party members to get them to vote, or in SF’s view where up is down and night is day, doing nothing.
So take that spin, forget that anyone could possibly see it differently, and slap it on Powell’s endorsement and you get “He’s only doing it because he’s black.”
The grain of salt here is that in SF’s view, there is NO legitimate reason to vote for Obama over McCain. So EVERY state reasons therefore must be suspect.
Was Barack? Nope, he was out campaigning and fund raising. So I guess he has to STFU too, right? I mean, if you’re being intellectually honest…
Actually, he was there. Even asked questions and seemed genuinely interested in the topic, unlike McCain OR Bush.
Wrong again, Farris.
Actually, he was there. Even asked questions and seemed genuinely interested in the topic, unlike McCain OR Bush.
Not only was Obama there, he didn’t need to suspend his campaign to do it.
Then again, neither did McCain whose “suspended” campaign continued to run ads, raise money, keep campaign offices open, etc. Actually, can anyone name some part of normal business McCain’s campaign didn’t continue to engage in other than letting Grampy take a break and sit quietly in meetings?
Ah yes. The tribal mentality seasoned with projection & paranoia.
“Powell is supporting Obama because they’re both black.” Makes sense to a racist cracker. He would NEVER vote for someone of a different skin color, religion, or sex, (tribalism) so he figures no one else would. (projection)
He also fears the different. (paranoia)
It would be extremely difficult to go lower on the ladder of stupid.

Well, he did bail on Letterman.
