Obama Canvasser Attacked
Tweet
Sad.
On Saturday, police were not releasing the identity of the suspect, or the exact location of the incident, because no arrest had been made and to ward off potential acts of retaliation. But Schey confirmed that the incident occurred in the vicinity of 4 Mile Road and Aberdeen Lane on the village’s east side.
Schey said a preliminary investigation reveals that two campaign workers had gone to the home just before 1:30 p.m. He said the homeowner apparently did not share the same political views as the campaign workers, and words were exchanged. The homeowner then allegedly forcibly escorted one of the campaign workers from his property.
A reader posting a comment on The Journal Times Web site released a name and address of the alleged suspect. That comment was removed from the site, but a call was made to the house to inquire if the person had been involved in the incident.
No call was returned from that residence as of late Saturday night.
In the television interview, Takehara said she had received a call from Obama later Saturday.
‘Sen. Obama understood, reassured me, he was wonderful,’ Takehara said. ‘It made me feel connected to this government again.’
Takehara made a plea for negative campaign tactics to cease.
‘This negative stuff has to stop,’ she said. ‘We’re all Americans. This is about protecting our democracy, not about attacking each other.’

Meanwhile, in New York, criminal charges HAVE been filed against an Obama supporter who was so incensed that McCain supporters would hold a rally in HIS city that he took the sign away from one woman and hit her over the head with it:
http://thesilentmajority.wordpress.com/2008/10/16/up-date-on-the-assault-against-a-mccain-manhattan-volunteer/
THIS is what Obama meant by “get in their faces,” not turning into whiny wusses because some guy told you to get the hell of his land, and wouldn’t take no for an answer.
J.
Yes, Barack Obama incited assault by calling his opponent a terrorist sympathizer and not pro-American… oh wait, that was your boy, John McCain.
“Terrorist sympathizer?” You’re right, that’s too much.
Colleague of a terrorist? That fits. Twice.
Neighbor of a terrorist? Yup.
Guest in the home of a terrorist? Yes.
Book-blurber of a terrorist? Gotcha.
Office-mate of a terrorist? That works, too.
I guess it is conceivable that Obama could be hired by a terrorist, serve on two boards with a terrorist, direct money to the organizations and cronies of a terrorist, have his political “coming out” party in the home of a terrorist, share office space with a terrorist, be featured in and praise the book of a terrorist, and not have sympathy for a terrorist, so that might be a bit of a stretch.
Sorry if I’m being a bit forward here. I’m just following Obama’s
incitefulinsightful advice to “get in the faces” of those I discuss matters with.J.
The guy who did this exhibited the typical level of intelligence in a McCain supporter. Did he really think he was going to help his candidate by roughing up a supporter of the opposition? No, he didn’t think, he was a maverick and did what his gut told him to do.
What a maroon.
Using your definition, all those other Republicans who worked with Ayers are sympathizers too. Not to mention John McCain’s friend G. Gordon Liddy who called for DEA agents to be killed by “head shots”. Such idiocy, and always on the right.
Will McCain speak out against this? I doubt it. He certainly didn’t condemn the The New York Post for trolling schoolchildren on Facebook to dig up dirt on “what kind of mother” Michelle Obama is. The practice quite nearly borders on pedophilia. You would think McCain would take a strong stand against this sort of perversion, the stalking of the Obama’s children’s classmates to interrogate them about Michelle’s child-raising skills. I was leaning towards McCain until now, but his silence in the face of this outrage has tipped me in the other direction. Has he no sense of shame left?
“Sorry if I’m being a bit forward here…”
If you are going to start apologizing, how about you start with an apology for being so fucking stupid.
That terrorist you so desperately want to associate with Obama, also associated with one of McCain’s key supporters, so McCain is one degree of separation from him.
Hell, the head of McCain’s transition team lobbied for Saddam.
God, your parents must have fucked you over as a kid, because you don’t grow up this stupid by accident.
Mungen, I doubt that “the guy” cared a bit about how his actions might reflect on McCain. I suspect it was more of a theory of the guy telling the canvasser to “get the fuck off my property” and not being instantly obeyed — as is his legal right to demand and expect.
Meanwhile, the canvasser is thinking that how could ANYONE not immediately embrace the Message Of Hope And Change and if the guy would just LISTEN while the canvasser is “getting in his face,” then he’d see the light and embrace the way of Hopey Changefulness.
So Mr. Hopey Changefulness canvasser gets shown the curb by some guy who seems to think that HIS home is HIS property, and HE gets to decide who can set foot on it.
That’s it. We need to find this homeowner and “share” his property around for the common good. He’s being selfish and greedy.
J.
Idiocy? Maybe. Could be willful. Desperation? You can smell it.
I’d say the Senator from Illinois is dominating the news cycle. And in a positive way. St. Louis, Powell, fund raising.
16 days? I think we can whip up another $50 mil.
If McCain had 1) anywhere NEAR the level of association with an ADMITTED and UNREPENTANT terrorist like Bill AYers and 2) such a lengthy history of lying and denying and obscuring the details of that relationship, then hell yes, he’d be unfit.
But back to the homeowner here… didn’t he get the message? Obama supporters have a DIVINE COMMANDMENT to “get in the faces” of people, and trying to assert his property rights and right to be left alone is obviously racist and hateful and inciteful and MUST be punished.
I recommend this guy be tracked down and given the full “Joe The Plumber” treatment. Let’s go over every single detail of this guy’s life and ruin him for daring to not give proper obeisance to Obama!
With luck, that’ll distract folks from things like Obama’s finance person having their own problems with tax liens…
J.
Liddy’s pretty unrepentant. In fact, entirely unrepentant and even celebratory. Does B&E and sabotage with intent to kill if necessary count as terorrism? More importantly, does it count as A Bad Thing?
More importantly still, what does this have to do with the original topic?
Just because someone is on your stoop you don’t have the right to hit them in the face no matter how much you’ve already yelled at them. There’s no indication from the article that self-defense was involved. This was assault. Of a man on a woman.
In all seriousness, isn’t that what it’s all about?
“More importantly still, what does this have to do with the original topic?”
It’s Jay Tea, he’s too stupid to stick to the topic at hand.
On a side note, he’s certainly getting a lot more irrational as the election draws near. Perhaps he’s getting worried because A.) he realizes McCain is in a lot of trouble and B.) he actually is dumb enough to believe all of the lies he keeps spreading.
I just raised the thermometer. Felt good.
Mungen, you’re right. But you also have to be pretty fucking stupid or arrogant (or both) to go to a complete stranger’s house, start arguing with them, and then refuse when told to go away.
My sympathy with the homewoner is diminished somewhat, but I have to admit that if some Obamoid did the same to me, I’d be sorely tempted to enforce my property and privacy rights, too.
What’s really interesting is contrasting this story with the Obama supporter in New York City who was so incensed with some people holding a pro-McCain march in HIS CITY that he took her sign away and beat her over the head with it.
On a public street.
And the police were going to let it slide until the woman showed that the guy had actually hurt her.
This story is a simple matter of two dumbasses running into each other, and — predictably — dumbassery erupted. Oliver’s trying to spin this into some grand Rovian conspiracy, and I feel compelled to point out that much worse is being done by the people on his side — who are just obeying Obama’s dictate to “get in their faces.”
J.
Nancy Takehara has moxie and the courage of he convictions. Do you think that field office in Racine or wherever it is is fired up today? She’s probably back out there again getting in the face of some other wingnut.
Nancy Takehara is a dumbass. She’s far from home, going up to complete strangers’ homes uninvited and picking political fights.
No, she doesn’t “deserve” to be hit. But anyone with a lick of common sense or civility wouldn’t do what Mungen thinks she ought to do.
Time to rewrite the 4th Amendment:
The right of the people to be secure in their persons, houses, papers, and effects, against unreasonable searches and seizures, shall not be violated, except by the Apostles of The One who wish to bring The Light to the right-wing unbelievers.
So much for the vaunted “right to privacy.” You can’t even throw some asshole off your doorstop after they refuse to leave.
Seriously… who actually thinks this is a good campaign tactic? Going up unannounced to people’s homes, preaching to them, arguing vehemently with them, and refusing to leave when told to?
Hell, even the Mormons and the Jehovah’s Witnesses don’t do that. Dunno about the Scientologists, though, but it wouldn’t surprise me.
J.
You mean canvassing?
Far from home? Far from home? Racine is like 40 miles from Chicago.
Nancy Takehara is the reason this campaign works. Not a dumbass. A patriotic, involved American.
And you are scared of her. Really scared of her. And that makes me happy.
…who was so incensed with some people holding a pro-McCain march in HIS CITY that he took her sign away and beat her over the head with it.
First of all, linky please.
Second, did Sen. McCain call her personally to express his sympathy?
So Obama has a peripheral relationship centering on charity work with a guy 40 years removed from his extremist past. Meanwhile McCain has a working relationship with a lobbyist that worked for Saddam Hussein. He has also has lobbyists on his campaign that lobby for foreign governments like Russia and China. His chief economic advisor is the architect of the credit meltdown that is terrorizing the financial markets.
Just what is McCain’s deal with these lobbyists? And more importantly, what favors is he doing for and receiving from their corporate and foreign clients?
Jay Tea, it’s hard to tell if you really believe this crap about “Obama is tied to a terrorist!” stuff or if you feel like you’re merely doing your duty for the cause. In any case, it’s kind of pathetic and reeks of desperation. And it’s this precise sort of desperation that’s leading to spasms of violence and we see suffered by this canvasser.
That’s right Jay, your posts and those of your ilk are playing a role in inciting this anti-Obama violence, and we’re not going to forget about your deviant, dishonest behavior after all of this is over.
There’s a reason you’ve never been involved in a charity board to help education: it’s because you lack the moral chops, as, I can see, do many of the McCain supporters, like the violent thug who assaulted that canvasser just trying to do her volunteer work for the campaign like a good citizen. Learn about citizenship, sometime, Jay, and maybe you’ll have a moral future.
Tyro, Obama spent $150 million on “improving” Chicago’s schools and, in the end, only put money in the pockets of Ayers and his cronies.
Personally, in December I will be making a blood donation. This will earn me my 7-gallon pin from the Red Cross. In other words, I will have donated roughly five times my entire body’s supply of blood over my lifetime. I would argue that I have done more good through that than Obama did for Chicago’s schools. Those are MY “moral chops.”
And I’m not “afraid” of Ms. Takehara. I’m afraid FOR her, because her type of aggressive stupidity gets people in trouble — as shown once already.
As far as the link to the Obama supporter beating the McCain supporter with her own sign in New York City… here’s a blog article, complete with a copy of the felony criminal charges:
http://thesilentmajority.wordpress.com/2008/10/16/up-date-on-the-assault-against-a-mccain-manhattan-volunteer/
THAT, people, is thuggery.
J.
If you want someone to leave your front stoop, you close the door, lock it, call the police and tell them you have a property invader. If the person hasn’t left by the time the cops show up, it’s their job to get her off. The only permissible use of force in a civil society is by the agents of government.
“THIS is what Obama meant by ‘get in their faces’”
I wish to goodness that McCain supporters could read full paragraphs instead of just one clause a day.
“I need you to go out and talk to your friends and talk to your neighbors. I want you to talk to them whether they are independent or whether they are Republican. I want you to argue with them and get in their face,” he said.
“And if they tell you that, ‘Well, we’re not sure where he stands on guns.’ I want you to say, ‘He believes in the Second Amendment.’ If they tell you, ‘Well, he’s going to raise your taxes,’ you say, ‘No, he’s not, he’s going lower them.’ You are my ambassadors. You guys are the ones who can make the case.”
Yes, Obama was telling me to hit my friends. It’s all clear now. He’s figured out that little Asian women will terrorize their friends into voting for him.
Hey Jay, by endorsing Obama does that mean Colin Powell pals around with terrorists (by association)?
“Oliver’s trying to spin this into some grand Rovian conspiracy…”.
No he’s not. All he wrote in relation to this story was the single word “Sad”. Why do you lie?
She’s far from home, going up to complete strangers’ homes uninvited and picking political fights.
This is apparently the new definition of political canvassing. I’ll remember that.
The only permissible use of force in a civil society is by the agents of government.
That is SO enlightening. Perhaps you ought to review the actual laws on the books, where it is clearly established that the police have NO obligation to protect individuals from crime.
But that attitude does tie in quite nicely with Obama’s record on the 2nd Amendment — how he supported the DC absolute gun ban, how he agreed to the complete ban of handguns, and served on the board of the Woods Foundation that spent millions trying to establish that the 2nd Amendment is NOT an individual right, but the sole example in the Constitution where “the right of the people” means some amorphous “collective” right exercised only through government.
As I said before, Ms. Takehara did NOT deserve to get roughed up. But she certainly put herself in a very, very stupid position, and paid the price for it.
She apparently hasn’t learned her lesson. After one guy couldn’t convince to leave him alone short of force, she’s gonna go out and “get in the faces” of more people.
And thanks for that full quote, PG. Yet another example of Obama saying things that completely fly in the face of his established record. “Pay no attention to that gun-grabber behind the curtain!”
J.
Shorter Jay Tea: Uppity people (nudge, wink, heh) have it coming.
“…spent millions trying to establish that the 2nd Amendment is NOT an individual right…”
That’s because the 2nd Amendment is not an individual right. The Supreme Court got this one wrong, and the Woods Foundation got this one right.
Jay Tea,
Perhaps you ought to review the actual laws on the books, where it is clearly established that the police have NO obligation to protect individuals from crime.
Please quote me the law that says the police have NO obligation to protect individuals from crime. While DeShaney v. Winnebago says that the Due Process Clause imposes no duty on the State to provide members of the general public with adequate protective services, that case deals solely with police department liability for a failure to protect under the 14th Amendment to the federal constitution. It leaves open the possibility that state constitutions or federal or state law can impose such a duty.
Yet another example of Obama saying things that completely fly in the face of his established record. “Pay no attention to that gun-grabber behind the curtain!”
Even things that are individual rights, such as the First Amendment, can be overridden if the government has a compelling interest and a narrowly tailored remedy. One can argue as to whether D.C. has a compelling interest in combating crime, and whether a handgun ban is a sufficiently narrowly tailored method, but it demonstrates extraordinary ignorance of how constitutional law actually works to say that if X is an individual right, it cannot be limited.
Moreover, conservatives such as Justice Thomas have taken issue with the idea that the Bill of Rights applies to state and local governments. Originally, it applied as a limitation solely on the power of the federal government, and even today, after the 14th Amendment and over a century of incorporation doctrine, the Supreme Court still doesn’t apply all of the Bill of Rights (such as the 7th Amendment) to state and local governments. So even if the 2nd Amendment is an individual right, there’s a question as to whether it can be used to restrict the police powers of state and local governments.
Obama has not only studied but also taught constitutional law, so I suspect he’s a little more versed in these nuances than you are. Whoops, I said “nuance,” instead of living in a fantasy land in which anything that’s declared an individual right must be unlimited.
“As I said before, Ms. Takehara did NOT deserve to get roughed up.”
Nor did the lady in NYC. Neither perpetrators were representative of the candidates, so how about we let it go?
Bygones.
Duros, I’m more than willing. But if you’d care to count the number of articles just on Oliver’s main page where he draws a connection between the actions of some individuals and uses them to smear anyone who dares not wholeheartedly support Obama, you’d find at least five examples.
I’m more than willing to limit candidates’ liability to just what they and their organizations say. But if that’s not the standard being applied across the board…
J.
I’m more than willing. But…
I think this just about sums it up for Jay Tea.
“I think this just about sums it up for Jay Tea”.
SQ, remember, we are dealing with a person who thinks that Oliver writing the word “sad” is an example of him trying to spin something into “a grand Rovian conspiracy”.
Jay’s head asplodes.
And still three weeks to go!
But if you’d care to count the number of articles just on Oliver’s main page where he draws a connection between the actions of some individuals and uses them to smear anyone who dares not wholeheartedly support Obama, you’d find at least five examples.
Why should I care? Why should you?
See over on the right it says
It’s Oliver opinion and he’s entitled to it. I personally don’t think Oliver equates the actions of a few assholes with the campaigns as a whole, or the candidates themselves, for either side. the rest of us get that, why don’t you?
Also, so much for you never using the “but they do it, too” gambit.
Seems like just a few weeks ago you were saying you never go there.
