“Carol” has already almost totally disappeared from the Baltimore area. The only theatres still playing it run it only two or three times a day.
“W”, however, got a scathing review from the Sun.
W. is the better movie, but I still would not recommend paying theatre prices to see it.
So far the best movie to open in October has been Nick and Norah’s Infinite Playlist.
Eh, wait for the DVD. Competently made and pretty much hits the main points of W’s bio but doesn’t have much real insight and never really catches fire dramatically. James Cromwell as GHWB has the best performance.
Stone couldn’t seem to decide whether he was fantasizing or making a accurate biopic. On the one hand, he claims the whole movie is factually footnoted; on the other hand, he seems to have missed basic stuff about Bush II, such as the fact that he wasn’t firmly nicknamed “W” until his presidential run (I remember when Texas journalists were puzzling out what to call him to distinguish him from Bush I, and settled on Shrub) and that he grew up in an old-fashioned East Coast elite that did not OK talking with your mouth full. Barbara Bush probably had a wooden spoon at the table for rapping the knuckles of the kids who did that.
It’s been several years since I’ve been able to listen to the sound of George Bush’s voice and personally, I don’t think his lines would improve much delivered by an actor.
I haven’t seen it but will probably, as EJ suggests, wait for DVD. I will say that your analysis of the film seems more or less on par with what I expect from an Oliver Stone film–more interested in evoking mood and theme than in focusing on fine details.

Not surprising. Same with JFK and Nixon.
JFK and Nixon were both good films, though, so that’s okay.
I dunno. Roger gave it 4 stars so it can’t be bad, but having lived through that prick’s presidency (touch wood) I doubt I’d be able to actually see most of the film through the blood that will bulid up in my eyes out of sheer, blinding rage.
According to the Box Office Mojo site, “W.” made an estimated $3,800,000 on Friday alone. Saturday’s take should move it past “Carol” AND “Religulous.”
Don’t bother. It’s a sketch movie with a lot of the familiar elements jumbled together, most of the impersonations are weak (Thandie looks like Condi but can’t sound like her, Wright barely looks or sounds like Powell at all, and Dreyfuss doesn’t pull off Cheney), and it’s all just too soon in the sense that the sort of people who consistently read liberal blogs have heard practically all this stuff a jillion times. If you want a more coherent analysis, the Onion’s A.V. Club review is accurate.
