Sarah Palin Cannot Speak

Look at this bowl of mush. This is supposedly an adult. This is supposedly someone running for national office. This is supposedly someone running for vice-president of the United States.

‘And I, I begged our speech writers, ‘Don’t make me say ‘Joe the Plumber,’ please, in any speeches.’ And I was asked, ‘Just one time, just at this fund raiser,” she recounted. ‘Just make sure people understand that we know what Joe the Plumber was talking about when he was confronting Barack Obama and saying, ‘Wait a minute, aren’t you going to take my money, take my earnings and give it to somebody else who maybe hadn’t worked as hard as I have worked?”

‘What about this reward for strong work ethic, isn’t that what capitalism is all about? Isn’t that what the American economy should be based upon? And so when I mention Joe the Plumber, know that that’s why I do mention it. Because we understand what his concerns were as he spoke to Barack Obama there in that rope line,’ she added. ‘We will be working for Joe the Plumber and working for the small business owners and those who wish to own business, those who have that entrepreneurial spirit and want to grow business and create jobs, hire more people and take care of their families. And with millions of American struggling to sustain a small business right now, I hope that business owners especially across this great nation are paying very, very close attention to the differences in the candidates.’

You’ve gotta be sh—— me.

I love the Fox News line of attack:

‘Wait a minute, aren’t you going to take my money, take my earnings and give it to somebody else who maybe hadn’t worked as hard as I have worked?”

No asshole shill, we’re going to give it to building bridges in Minnesota, schools in New Orleans, flak jackets for soldiers fighting in Iraq, and bunch of other stuff.

But of course ol’ Republican Plant Joe doesn’t pay his taxes already.

A well-built infrastructure is un-American; bridges should have the freedom and liberty to collapse

Dang, there’s just no substitute for JR.

And the Governor is a real babbler on paper, but loads of people find her speaking style charming. I’m certainly not one of them. She’s sort of like FDR lite, in the speaking style anyway. He used folksy homilies and would cut people off to tell them stories about his uncles. The difference was that he always had a clear point.

I figure that if the function of a road is to get me from here to there, then there’s no need for stop signs or traffic signals to slow me down. I know what to do with my own car better then the government does, and everybody trying to drive to where they’re goin’, lookin’ out for themselves, that’ll be better than having any interference from some government bureaucrats puttin’ up signals tellin’ us when to stop and start, ya betcha!

And, frankly, the free market can build them roads better and more efficiently than the government can, too… with all it’s snooty plannin’ an’ zonin’ an’ takin’ away people’s property usin’ eminent domain.

It’s time to get government off our backs, and out of our pockets like St. Reagan wanted… and into our bedrooms and uteruses where it belongs, tellin’ us what God wants us to do, darn tootin’!

Who has worked hard – the Palin ? Not a chance. Who has built a myth around her “folksness” and her charm – those who desparately need a republican win and those who predominantly don’t care about other Americans. Stupidity is now a prerequisite for public office in some places.

Separation of church and state is something America was founded on but it seems that any stunt will do with many politicians. Speaking from the heart as some have labelled the Palin as doing no longer has the meaning it did in the days of Truman, FDR or even Reagan. It means following a script and trying to appeal to your base. The PAlin does not speak from the heart and she knows it, knows her intellectual limitation and trys very hard follow the script. These people only believe what they believe if it helps them win votes, she could not give a damn about religion unless it allows those who would criticize to stay at a distance and those who are stupid enough to agree to vote. Bush in no way believes that God speaks to him – NO WAY – it just allows him votes from the dummer portion of the voting public who believe that is a good thing.

The idea that “capitalism rewards those with strong work ethic” is so incredibly divorced from the reality that I’m aghast to hear anybody try and sell it as a line of thinking.

People working eighty hours at two minimum wage jobs have plenty of “work ethic.” What they don’t have is the connections and system gamesmanship to really enjoy the fruits of “capitalism.”

Capitalism rewards those who look out for number one. This is not the same thing as “work ethic.”

OK, what am I missing? Lord knows Palin has been known to ramble to the point of where adjoining sentences seem to have nothing to do with each other.

And with the “Palin Cannot Speak” headline and “This is supposedly an adult.” in the lede I expected more of that. But, while you may disagree with what she is saying, this passage is not a garbled collection of mis-matched phrases.

  8. Really? Read it. I don’t care about the substance. This is at a lower level than a newborn.

  9. thebewilderness says:

    It’s “American Dream” code speech.
The problem is that everyone outside the McCain/Palin campaign is aware that that myth has been overwhelmed by reality.

  10. somejackass says:

Sean’s right on this one. This quote doesn’t strike me as particularly bad, especially for Palin.

  11. Sean D. Martin says:

It’s always nice to know that I can garner the support of some jackass. :D :)

  12. You are honestly saying that

What about this reward for strong work ethic, isn’t that what capitalism is all about? Isn’t that what the American economy should be based upon? And so when I mention Joe the Plumber, know that that’s why I do mention it.

Makes any sense? Cause it doesn’t.

  13. Sean D. Martin says:

OW: Makes any sense? Cause it doesn’t.

I believe I can follow what she is saying. Particularly if you continue and include the next line of the quote.

“Because we understand what his concerns were as he spoke to Barack Obama there in that rope line.”

Now she is by no means an eloquent or polished speaker. But (my original point) I don’t see her in this passage as being unable to speak, to communicate a point.

I read it as her saying: People should be rewarded for their strong work ethic. America should be based on that, work hard and you get to enjoy the rewards of your work. Joe was concerned that that would not be the case under Obama.

I don’t think I’m adding to or misrepresenting what she was saying. Agree with her view or not, I can follow what she’s saying.
