  • This is the modern Republican party since Nixon. Sorry for repeating this so much, but it’s important.

  • McCain’s campaign really jumped the shark when he didn’t bother to try and quell the shouts to cause physical harm to a sitting Senator of the United States and presidential candidate.

The sad thing is that I’m absolutely certain that there are groups across this country right now trying to figure out exactly how to go about doing it.

  • I’m curious. Just for comparison/contrast, what action would get a “The base” tag for a Democrat?

  • Problem with tagging any sort of Democratic base is finding a large enough bloc to march in lockstep.

Lack of a comprehensive base has been the Democrats’ traditional problem, Sean, like trying to herd cats. Even now you still have some of them willing to vote for McCain despite policy differences just because they won’t ever vote for Obama.

I remind the world again: “the base” in Arabic is “al-Qaida.” Being part of it is not to be desired.

  • Sorry, but this is an OLD joke. I heard it about the Clintons in the 1990s (I think it was on the John Boy and Billy Big Show, a drive time radio show that is fast disappearing). I heard it again about the Bushes this decade. It wouldn’t surprise me if it was told about the Kennedys.

  • Wow Oliver, another disingenuous headline. Why am I not surprised.

Now you know why your claims of racism and bigotry don’t mean shit any more.

  • Sure, if by “disingenuous” you mean “accurate”.

I laughed when Charlie Brooker said “John Wilkes Booth, Lee Harvey Oswald, John Hinckley Junior, where are you now that we need you?”; tasteless hyperbole is generally fair game.

  • Just for comparison/contrast, what action would get a “The base” tag for a Democrat?
    Something involving stupid hippies.

  • Hey, I resemble that remark!

  • Oliver, you are so full of it:
    1) John McCain hasn’t heard anything like that at his rallies. Or he condemned them if he did.
    2) Barack Obama’s rallies have had the same things said about McCain. In fact, all that “cheering” you hear at Obama rallies is actually all them darkies yelling “Kill Whitey!”

And if you don’t believe me, you can ask John McCain, because his maverickyness means he never lies.

  • “…another disingenious headline”.

True, although the “joke” is still in pretty poor taste.

  • “Wow Oliver, another disingenuous headline.”

    How? How is it disingenuous?

  • When asked about the e-mail, Austin said it was a mistake and apologized and that he wouldn’t knowingly have circulated it. He said he planned to send an apology and retraction to the same e-mail list.

    Yeah, right.

  • He said he planned to send an apology and retraction to the same e-mail list.

“Planned”? So he hadn’t done so yet. How long does it take? Forwarded the joke pretty fast, but the retraction is something he’ll have to take some time to get around to.
